First thing people hear is your sound - work on it. Second thing people hear is time - work on it. If you have a good sound and good time the notes you play don't matter quite as much. However, have a reason for selecting each note, pattern, harmony, melody, or scale you play. Easier said than done. Time to hit the shed.
