It's not because of advancements in technology, education, or scholarship. King James had a lot of say as to how those translations turned out. It's an abomination and a misrepresentation of the infallible word of God. Basically, King James had it altered to suit his purposes.

Acts 8:26-40 explains how Philip baptized an Ethiopian Eunich. From the beginning of that narrative to the end, Philip makes no mention of the Ethiopian being cursed and unable to uptake the priesthood. He let him go back to Ethiopia without that information. If his skin was such a hurdle to being a member of the "royal priesthood", why didn't Philip mention it? Also in 1 Peter 2:9, Revelation 1:5; 10:6 and 20:6 mention the priesthood and make no distinctions based on skin colour. Why? Poor you!
