I was chatting to Mike Joyce, the drummer, last night. He said that Johnny threw up before they went on stage because there was most of the festval there to watch them!!! Unbelieveable
Thank You , Billy ( William Clemet ) Oliver the 3rd for bringing this music into my life in the late 1980s. When we were both in high school and just trying to get by in the Bronx, NYC...I miss you and I hope LIFE has treated you well. The Smiths were are bond and I hope they bring us back together someday.
When these guys were "HUGE" the word on the street in the US was like... shhhhhhhh... It was such a secret, no radio support, the only place to go and hear them was college clubs, and dorms.. MTV on rare occasion..... Such a rich tapestry of emotion came from their sound ---
This performance is still raw, so emotional and moving, even all these decades later. The Smiths were a flame of perfection, like Joy Division/New Order.
Fuck...why do all the best bands implode...these guys should still be making mu7sic and doing what they did cos it was fucking awesome...the smiths RIP
In a way I'm glad the sound quality on this vid less than perfect, otherwise the miracles messrs Rourke & (especially) Marr are performing might have literally blown my mind!
This tune is musical genius. The Andy Rourke bass line, the Marr guitar work. Love the descending lines. The bittersweet delivery of a line line like spineless bastards all. The structure is brilliant. It's mind blowing how Johnny pulled the tunes live with all the guitar work that is on the albums. It's too bad they are on such bad terms. Morrissey is more than a little off with his assertion that it was all him and Marr. It's one of those sum off all the parts greater that the whole deal
Im sad watching Jonny Marr in the cribs while he's wearing indie clothes and his guitar is so fucking low.... almost under his knees. But i guess he feels seventeen again...
@mufc1970ok I sent him a message to tell him that the Cribs were shit. He stuck me on their fucking mailing list just to torture me. What a croc of pap they are, and have you seen their pics? they look a right bunch of nobs. Marr is a genius lost in the wilderness of mediocrity, wish he would snap out of it.
have to say, and im a lover of all music,,from acdc to nick drake, metallica to type o...barr most pop music..but the smiths are the most exceptional band ,five years together five great albums, they were truly extraordinary talents.more than music.
@roadhockey There's no such thing as a "favourite" Smiths song. One day its the Headmaster Ritual then on another day its I Know its Over then its Panic then its...... on and on it goes.
i sware watching this gets me so emotional.just morrisseys facial expressions. hes amazing. my gosh wat a brilliant man. aww i want to cry. this is beautiful
@craig94music The interesting thing is that this shit still goes on today. I go to a private school, and when I first heard this song I was amazed at how much I could relate to it.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I never listened to these guys much until recently, then I heard the first side of this album and thought "damn, where the hell where they hiding??" But unfortunately, their later stuff doesn't live up to the promise of this song.
Excuse me?! Some of the songs written after this; There is a light that never goes out Shoplifters of the world Last night i dreamt that somebody loved me Stop me if you think you've heard this one before The boy with the thorn in his side Bigmouth strikes again Stretch out and wait Half a person.........on and on and on. "their later stuff doesnt live up to the promise of this song" ????? Go jump off a very tall building buddy.
when i was 15 at school in 1985 i related fully to the smiths i used to think they were for my age and now im 40 the songs are still so relevant! so timeless, headmaster ritual thats a song for schoolkids ? but actually it isnt, its relevant for all ages
such a great band. i think they should have been bigger because i listen to many different genres but personally find that the music from the smiths is truly higher than anyone else. the whole band are excellent and johnny marr intelligently supports morrissey without being overindulgent like most guitarists. like i say though, the whole band are classic. This is real music...
i went to go see morrissey live a few months ago, and he still puts on a heck of a show, but man i wish i could have seen him when he was still with the smiths.
@AtomsForPeace92 Just heard it. Absolutely brilliant. Check the radiohead version of ceremony by new order, I think that's even better. What were radiohead up to when they recorded all those classic covers?
I am located in Guatemala city! Believe me, nobody here knows about Morrissey or the Smiths, I think im the only one with all the MOZ discography...! anyway nobody change me mind I love moz music!
I am a Hungarian Smiths fan. It is not easy bacause nobody knows them in my surroundings. I cannot share my experience:( but it would be good). I tried to show videos for others but they did not understand them. I'm a lone wolf here with my passion:)
ahaha <15 and yes many bands group whatever now a day... no uniqueness and pointless lyrics Morrisey is deep and i dont think people around our age would care to listen bc they dont understand its art x_X everyones a copycat like the song from the cranberries lol
I did some jail time last year. Everybody would sing all the time to stay sane. In the holding pens at court, I sang this one because it felt appropriate: boarding school/ jail, whatever. The correction officers were like, "wow, that's the smartest lyrics we've ever heard from a prisoner..."
Yeah, I guess it's kind of silly. The singing thing was important in jail, tho...I've never heard so many awful wanna' be rappers in my life. Someone gave me a bunch of Cheese Nips for doing "Career Opportunities" by the Clash, a pretty substantial gift in jail terms. But, being heterosexual, I avoided singing Smiths songs in the shower there. Especially "This Charming Man".
@bettyswollex That's so sweet of you to say. Anyway, I'm not a lifelong jailbird or anything like that...I'm going on 40 and this was my first time; it was drug-related. Yeah, there were some awful people in there, (especially the guards), but in general people in jail were nicer than in the outside world. Unfortunately some of the nicest ones had committed murders and will never see the light of day.
@marcmud70 yeah, anyone who starts a youtube comment with "i did some jail time last year" is a little bit of a prick. i am however curious, what did you sing when you were getting bent over and stuffed full of black cock? Hit me baby one more time? Grease lightning? baby got back?
@louisalive No, not in NYC anyway. They should, right....I did have a conversation with one guard about politics, pro and con Ayn Rand, libertarianism, etc. And that conversation got me out of potential solitary time because I'd just had a fight with another guard, (the only fight I had in 5 months). The guards are impressed by intelligence, snobby as it might sound, it's not really something they see much in the inmates...Street smarts, survival skills, yes, but intellectual smarts no.
@marcmud70 Yeah man, the smiths are brilliant, but part of their charm is the fact they're alternative, they're were hardly ever in the mainstream due to this. Hmmm, it's an interesting story, but I can't imagine guards being particularly intellectual themselves. I'm surprised they didn't resent your intelligence for the fact that your probably smarter than they are, although, I've never come across a policeman who's likely to have a constructive view on political liberalism, so i could be wrong
wow, if it was in Madrid, it was a free concert in Parque del Oeste... i remember well. I intended to go but I couldn't go finally. How moving seeing this!
Johnny Marr is god! i wish i understood his reasons for choosing certain guitars for certain tracks. with the chorus/flange going you would always assume rick. les paul seems a fave of his though
yea, something else then Britney Spears huh? Damn this band is amazing. I was 16 years old when my brother gave me my first vinyl pop album titled "meat is murder" from The Smiths. I never heard of the band, since I grew in Holland, but I loved the music. Good my father (farmer and not particular vegetarian) didn't understand english!!
do you not realise exactly how fanatical The Smiths' and Morrissey's fans are?
And even after your glaring mistake you're still wrong in saying that legendary bands can't do covers. Radiohead's cover of this very song; alone, crucifies your argument.
What's the name of the song being played at the beginning?..right before headmaster ritual

yea, something else then Britney Spears huh? Damn this band is amazing. I was 16 years old when my brother gave me my first vinyl pop album titled "meat is murder" from The Smiths. I never heard of the band, since I grew in Holland, but I loved the music. Good my father (farmer and not particular vegetarian) didn't understand english!!

Songs like this made The Smiths legendary.
Probably, the most inventive song by Johnny Marr.

Listen to the original by Radiohead - bands who resort to cover versions can't be considered legendary

My friend, the original one is by The Smiths (1985) not by Radiohead (2007).
Anyway, The Smiths & Radiohead are legends (almost gods like The Beatles).

people who don't know what they're talking about should resort to being quiet, or at least not arrogant XD

lol, WHAT? i am a big radiohead fan, pretty much only knowing the smiths by lists of what my friend likes and because of Radiohead's COVER...
even before playing it during their webcast Thom said that "this is a cover"!! wow..

Wow... so people don't even make an attempt to check their facts before they post ridiculous crap for all to see?

haha dude you are a fucking moron.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!
never ever say shit like that on a smiths page,
do you not realise exactly how fanatical The Smiths' and Morrissey's fans are?
And even after your glaring mistake you're still wrong in saying that legendary bands can't do covers. Radiohead's cover of this very song; alone, crucifies your argument.
Go and kill yourself.

In my time i have only watched a band as big as Oasis. I missed the stone roses and the Smiths. I feel cheated.
