Hal Kratzsch was my mother's stepbrother. He was adopted out because his biological mother couldn't support all the kids in those depression days. My mother passed away on Monday this week. Although she saw him and the group in Chicago in the 50's she would have treasured this video and others. I sorry I found this too late to show her. His sister Betty is the only one of that generation left. Lesson learned-continue to explore the new technology.
Along with Curtis Calderon, my favorite Freshman trumpeter. I'm so glad that there are some videos of him to see and hear. Neat ethereal trumpet style!
..wait for a moment... and miracle of miracles..your very own Soundie. A Soundie like the one your dad, or your grampa or even your great grampa watched and listened to. Maybe The Freshmen or Peggy Lee or... well anyway...yes Virginia there were Soundies. For real...no lie.
Before MTV and VH1 and once upon a time a very long long time ago there was ..."Soundies"...Soundies? Yep, Soundies. You'd find them at the tavern or the saloon or the lounge and you could approach a Soundie, a box about the size of a jukebox bearing a small movie screen and a coin slot into which you could drop a nickle... (con't)
Don Barbour's voice blended beautifully into that magic FF harmony just as the others, but when he sang solo, man he brought another sense cool to the set.
The music of this fabulous group continues to warm my heart every day. This one of the very early groups is wonderful to SEE and HEAR. I've never heard a Four Freshmen sing a song I didn't like. Their talent continues to amaze me. From the very first to the current group, I hope their is FF group for my grandkids to listen to - they are life changing at least for me they were.
I can't believe how old this is....that looks like Ken Errair singing 4th and playing trumpet. This must be from like 1952 or '53 or something. I didn't even know there was video footage of group #2 out there. Wonderful!
is this the original version of this great tune? love it!

Loved this. Very rythmic, low-key, and subtle; from a time when a good musical performance was not synonymous with blasting the roof off.

So nice to hear the almost original FF where the voices blend and the high voice isn't so dominent as the present FF.

That is Hal Kratzsch playing trumpet and singing the 4th part. Be sure to view the other Four Freshmen videos available on YouTube.
