I pray they never make his magnum opus into a movie, it will never be done right. Besides having to be NC-17, they'd probably fill it with globull warming crap, or other pseudo science. I'd rather he and his work live on forever in the grand theater of my mind.
Faked or not, I damn well want to see that novel done right as a movie before I discorporate.
It's a pity that Ginnie isn't around any more. She got online quite regularly (in the alt.fan.heinlein Usenet group particularly) after Bob's death, and I think she would've enjoyed this. Thanks.
Darn straight there couldn't! Besides the difficulty in interpreting the material, America's Christian 'mullahs' would declare a fatwah. The philosophy is like the Wiccan 'do as though wilt but hurt none'. One of -my- fave's Bester's The Stars My Destination could but I dread the liberties Hollywood would take. Better (?) they stick with recycling the last 50 years.
sisl is a better read than any movie could be, but thanks for this teazer! there will never (?) be a faithful movie made of this book for obvious reasons ...
the idea of 'waterbrother' is an idea we must all grok, never thirst
at 2:20 its says from writer producer ross priluker and this book is by heinlien......oh wait thats you hahahaha they should really make this into a movie
I'm only at the part where Mike is levitating all the objects and Jubal asks him to notice all the things that he can do that Earthlings can't... I can't wait to see what becomes of him and his powers! Those electric blue guys in the trailer must have reflected his role in the book? :-O
I really liked this trailer! Very good job of using what you had available to get the concept across. I really wish that there was a movie version of this book!
Carlos Castaneda didn't want a movie made of The Teachings of Don Juan because he didn't want Don Juan to look like Anthony Quinn, and I have the indelible image of John Hurt as Winston Smith since i saw THAT movie. I wonder if Heinlein would like his Michael looking like Keanu Reaves? I couldn't watch it. I have my own Michael in my own mind.
I don't see where this trailer has any relationship to the Heinlein novel....and I disagree....I think Stranger In A Strange Land would make agreat film...even better a multi episode HBO or showtime series....The Heinlein Story AS IS has great dialogue, great characters, tells a great story and is actually a helluva lot more relevant to today than the era in which it was written...
Heinlein is great. He has a wonderfully playful use of language, and rather than spell things out, leaves you to answer questions about morality, relgion, government etc. Stranger is a massive undertaking but worth the read. I'd thoroughly recommend the moon is a harsh mistress or job though
am I the only one who is annoyed that nowadays most book-to-films adaptations are always something stupid that mostly no one wants to see (confessions of a shopaholic,I love you Beth Cooper[yeah thats actually a book] etc.) When there are an endless amount of books that deserve to be adapted in some way (This one,Ender's game,Peter Pan in Scarlet,Bartimaeus Trilogy)
Did anyone involved in the production of this trailer actually read the original story in full? Or do research beyond that? Or even understand it? I have. And I do. I live it as best i can. I suspect that others do not.
I am guessing that they did not, as horrible as this is... Stranger In a Strange Land is one of my all time favourite books, and... This video... Wow... Thank you for not sucking.
But, I fear they'd fuck it up like they did Puppet Masters and Starship Troopers, both of which stunk to high heaven. Maybe if Spider Robinson wrote the screenplay the story might survive. Another one of his books that would make a great movie is Glory Road, There's you action and adventure, folks.
darth i think your just trying to come up with random reasons to hate on the trailer. sexuality is irrelevant to the trailer and you dont need only a green screen with the FX program
I can't see any hollywood studio making this. Some of the central themes revolve around things they are supposed to portray as 'bad' to keep the ever loud 'moral minority' happy. Bisexuality, polyamory, accepted public sexuality, being happy with your body even if it isn't perfect, ect., its a big list. The special effects could be done entirely green screen with a home digital FX program, no one will care. Its the actors you have to cast perfectly, spot on everytime.
I'd like to see Shinichirō Watanabe (the guy who produced Cowboy Beebop, some Animatrix, and others) produce the movie. The fantasy would be more real in animation anyhow :-)
A video would be cool, but no offense I just don';t think anyone could make a movie to do this book the justice it deserves. I do like the trailer you made though.
I've just recently begun listening to the audio book. 'Hadn't read it since the 70s. Great trailer. I wish they'd make a movie from this book that really has been the source/inspiration for a lot of other movies and novels. If they can make a movie from Puppet Masters, and Starship Troopers, they can do SIASL.
Maybe Johnny Depp as the main character. Think Scissor Hands, he was perfect in that movie. Malcolm McDowell would have been perfect 20 years ago. Forget the special effects, there are none to speak of. The movie will require a very, very talented actor.
I just recently started reading the book. It's interesting so far. Seeing this though, I really wish a movie would be made for the book--one that could be comparable to this trailer. It's really well done, and presents (at least to my knowledge, based on what I've read so far) some good (meaning: important) points from the book. Nice job.
Thanks for all the great responses guys. I feed on criticism and its always nice to hear positive feedback. If there is anything you guys think I should change in the trailer, let me know. Enjoy :)
@rpriluker I really liked your "FAKE" trailer, and I thought that it was a good idea to use the clips from those movies that you used. I have read some of the comments that other people have left, and I have to disagree with some of them that say that a "faithful" movie will never be made. I believe that a "mini series" could be made with ANIMATION that could stick to the original story-line! With the advances in animation, I would love to see it. Just remember "FINAL FANTASY" THE MOVIE!
Your editing skills are amazing! So much so that you scared the p*ss out of me. As luck would have it, I've not seen any of the movies you used and when I saw Keanu playing Michael, I almost killed myself. You were just close enough to make me believe they'd royally raped SIASL. I don't see how it could be brought to the screen without eviscerating it...but hope springs eternal. Never Thirst. Thou Art God.
I humbly disagree dontouch. Although I usually hate movies made out of my favorite novels, I always thought SIASL was perfectly fitted for film adaptation. The plot seems to lend itself to a film. (with 4 major acts) That being said....it has been 10 years since I have read the book, so I may be remembering some things a bit wrong. Either way, it will be interesting to see if they make the movie. I hear Tom Hanks is signed on to star in it, if it ever happens.
redresch-I would love to hear how you think SIASL can be brought to the screen without tainting it. Care to elaborate? The Tom Hanks talk was back in the 90's. He was a bit long in the tooth for the part then. I don't think it could be done with him now.
I should have read more. I'm so glad it's a fake. My worst nightmare would be for someone to make Stranger into a movie. They did rape Starship Troopers. They raped Puppet Master. How could anyone ever take Stranger in a Strange Land and make a decent movie out of it? There is a love story, but it's not the primary concern of the book. They'd take out all the ideas, all the questions, all the philosophy and do what? Make a porno flick? Or an action adventure? No. Leave the book alone.
It's difficult to make a movie out of SIASL because its value is in being a prophetic and influential piece of sci-fi, but today it would be somewhat dated thematically -- too many of those things have come to pass. Actually I think The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress would be a much more relevant film to make.
Depends who the writers and directors were. Starship troopers was well made in my opinion as Paul Verhoeven kept real to the atmosphere of a militaristic nation. Never read puppet masters, but was an interesting movie from what I recall.
they kept the some of the large themes in Starship Troopers, which I liked, but butchered a lot of the details - i.e., the MI had no powered suits, the MI was co-ed (it wasn't in the book, although the Navy was), Johnny being from Buenos Aires (he was Filipino in the book), Carl not dying, and, of course, the whole romantic thing with Dizzy even existing.
Though I do think Stranger should be made more popular... I don't think anyone could make a good Stranger movie (look how Starship Troopers was raped). You can't really make it a "love" story. honestly a don't think it would make a good movie
don't get me wrong, i love the book
but a lot of it is talking, specifically in jubal's garden, about various aspects of human culture
there's also a lot of politics that doesn't really go anywhere in the book
and the last third of the book is dedicated to free love and the sexual relationships between members of michael's following
not something i think hollywood would go for
