I honestly don't know much but I'm taking my SAT's for my Senior year (is that good anyways?) because I'll feel better knowing that I'll have more experience but man, I easily figured this one out. 35 :)
then, x2y = 16 >> why? because i multiplied 7 into two so the answer is 14 and there is a remaining y in x2y so i added two so the final answer is 16.. and obviously xy = 7 and there is a square on it.. so it will give us the result of 14... and here it is.. 16 -14 = 2..
i am not really good in mathematics,, and i hate math too..
so correct me if im wrong.. this is just my dumbass answer :P please do
No wonder my Algebra teacher stressed factoring so much.... This video helped a lot! Going into sophomore year this school year and I'm doing everything I can to get ready for "the big test".
He doesnt mean hard as in really hard to find the answer, but he means that as in it kills time to do. a lot of problems have these situations where u might spend a lot of time on one problem. The work isnt hard, but if u take the wrong approach...you're screwed
It's still very easy. I solved this problem in literally 1 second.
The problem with American math exams is that they are all multiple choice tests. In a test you can't check for the reasoning ability of the pupil. Most mathematical problems can't even be formulated as tests.
Hungarian exams are not tests, and they are also MUCH, I mean really much harder than this. In fact, Hungarian highschool acceptance exams (for elementary school students) are way harder than SAT.
I think you'd better take back some of the presumptuous claims you're making about American students. Hungary, to be frank, sucks at international Math competitions. The "stupid" math students you're berating have beaten Hungary in international Math competitions for 17 STRAIGHT YEARS, often with HUGE POINT DISPARITIES. Perhaps your entrance exams keep the unintelligent from dropping out but they don't seem to keep the "bright" hungarian students from embarasing themselves on the world stage.
Embarasing on the world stage? That's spelt EMBARRASSING, you retard. At least learn how to spell your own langauge before trying to look smart and informed. Ah, and don't use quotation marks for things I never said, bitch.
1) My first language isn't even English, it's Korean, so certain grammatical errors should be excused, especially given the casual informality with which we speak on an internet forum. and..
2) Count the number of characters in my last post.. do you know what you'll see? I HAD EXACTLY ZERO CHARACTERS REMAINING, in order to keep the entirety of my comment in one post while still keeping the ideas understandable I had to delete a select few characters from the post.
English isn't my first language, either, but I still know how to spell embarrassing. Oh, and I also know the difference between a spelling error and a grammatical error, which you seem to be ignorant of. That's something I learned in Hungarian schools that suck so hard in your opinion.
Regardless, I'm glad that you can concede that we have some sort of commonality, but you still didn't read my post. I misspelt embarrassing because the character count in my comment box was at exactly zero. I had to make omissions in my post for the sake of brevity and I decided to omit characters in the longer words because THEY WOULD STILL BE UNDERSTANDABLE. In addition, if you read the definition of grammar in any modern text it includes the composition of WORDS as well as structure.
I'm glad that you had the intelligence to dig up some random facts which have nothing to do with what I said, but that's what happens if one has no valid arguments.
Clearly, education quality is not measured by IMO results, especially because Americans BUY talents from other countries. Let's see some 2007 "American" IMO contestants:
America is an extremely cosmopolitan place. Alex Zhai is just as American as any blond haired, blue eyed boy on the street. Making the presumption that any one of these "foreign sounding" names gives credence to their respective "home countries" is both ethnocentric and bigoted. It is ethnocentric because it implies that surname commonalities imply some sort of host-country affinity, and it is bigoted for reasons that naturally follow.
Education quality is measured by Average Joe's performance. Don't tell me that people who find it difficult to factor a simple expression at the age of 18 have any chance in the Math Olympiad. It's Americans who embarrass themselves on the world stage.
And btw, I never said that Hungarian math education was very good, I just said that American math education sucked.
I'm a well educated, smart man in my 20's. However, I've never learned advanced math. My brain just stopped functioning after Pythagoras. Frustrating. But I do well anyways...
I learned this kind of thing in grade 9, it's definitely a very easy question, but I think nobody is to judge the American school system, nor the individuals who may find this difficult. It is ignorant to do so, so no matter what your education level is, if you mouth off about these things it just makes you look worse.
In the Russian school sytem such math problems are comonly found in grade 5 or 6. The major difference between US and Russia is that in Russia it's very hard, and because of that, when students finish highschool they forget mostly everything because it was to much at once, but in America is so simple, you can't do really anything with such simple math. I preffer the Russian one, even though people strugle to pass with 5's - grades are from 1 which is lowest to 10 and 5 is minimum for passing.
I beg to differ, I have a Russian friend in the US, who just moved to America, about a year back, and hes in Alegebra part 1 as a Senior....I did Algebra 1 in 7th grade. O.o
Damn, please tell me you're not really 19. In any case, here's a grammar lesson for you to boot: "you're" = "you are"; "your" is possessive: "your brain is missing". I'll chalk up "sterotypeing" to a typo although its use here doesn't make much sense.
@TheVinod43 That immature comment I posted was just for laughs, I didn't mean to insult him, just to bother him a bit, as I actually like him because he reminds me of someone related. As for you, if you died, I would feel deep sorrow, although I don't even know you. Take care bro.

Look at the rapidly declining American test scores since the 1950s. No wonder things that, in reality, are easy are now labeled "hard".
I don't doubt that many of today's scatterbrained, overmedicated kids would find this kind of "common sense" math problem difficult.

It caught me off guard at first but it's easy:
The common factor in that equation is XY so you factor that out and you get....
xy(x-y) = 7(5) = 35
The answer is C
As for the homework you do the same:
xy(X^2+Y^2) = 6(18) = 108
I want to be a math teacher! I'm currently a freshman in college. :)
