Man... I was always taught to sacrifice the aircraft "out yonder somewhere" if you loose control like that rather than expose fellow fliers to a possibly errant bird. But I guess you take a chance when you're into the 5 digits of investment. Wouldn't want to get hit by THAT thing for sure!
@erkq Sacrifice...as in CRASH IT? Youre freakin kidding right? For a loose rudder, its not dangerous at all, my grandma could land a plane without rudder!! Who taught you that anyway, the guy who sell you airplanes?I would get my money back if you paid him for that "advice"..
@MIRCWOOD The guy who taught me that was my R/C instructor, a WW II test pilot who test flew the P-38 among others. Back in the early 80's that was the general consensus, perhaps because a contest director's son had just been struck in the back of the head and killed by an errant 60 size pattern ship. So no, I'm not "freakin kidding".
@MIRCWOOD R/C is absolutely "for" me. I'm loving the electric revolution and with both airplanes and helicopters. R/C is "freakin" awesome compared to the early 80's.
Was a good landing, but the truth is you don't need to use the rudder to fly these planes. Most fly without it. Of course, he didn't panic, which is major, and he used the ailerons to steer the plane and offset any yaw from the bad rudder. Good landing, but not amazing.
@microdon2 Well if that's too easy for you, try landing with a battery slid to the back of the plane and a jammed elevator which only lets you point the nose up!
The reason I ask is that I had this happen to me twice, once recovered, once a sacrifice to the god of broken balsa.
Since the last one I only use kevlar thread, even on my big stuff. No stretch, no interfere with RF, light and thin. I'll never go back to wire pull-pull.
Yes, it was a pull pull system. This video was shot of a fellow club member and he was lucky to get it back onto the ground since the rudder is huge on this plane.
@artyomsdaddy You must not have setup your wire pull-pull very well because that should never happen twice. I have done tail touches and tons of hard flying with a wire pull-pull setup and have never had any issues.
I was flying my 70" Funtana a couple weeks ago, and somehow the servo screws pulled out on the right aileron... I couldn't figure out why I had to keep trimming the plane, so I brought it down. Luckily, the servo casing held the servo mostly in place (Right aileron was dropped about 2" on 1 side). So, from one disaster recoverer to another, Great save!
i had the same thing happen ,and luckily the same outcome,,6 flights later ,the piece of shit wild hare plane broke apart behind the wing, total destruction
what you do to keep he ruder from shaking is finding out wich cable broke then turn the ruder to to the ok side a little then the air passing by keeps the rudder tight (incase it happens again)
It's not a junior 60 lol, it won't climb just by adding throttle, or bank just with rudder.
If you lost either both ailerons or both elevators it would crash period. Luckily those surfaces each have their own servo driving them. If you lose 1 elevator or 1 aileron the chances are good of landing it.
Good point, my good friend John who owns the plane bought it because it would be an oddity and only 1 of two in existence. You are correct in that the lag time prevents this 3D YAK from ever performing to it's full potential.
Love the Plane! The Yak is the big boy for my hanger that I'm considering! I've had rudder go out before, but never had it "flap" around like that. Bet the Pucker Factor went way up. Nice control and landing! Glad to see her touch down without damage.
You obviously can afford to then, I think most people would prefer to be in the real thing but most people can't afford it. In my opinion a gas turbine at any scale is not a toy.
Very nice job man ! Loosing the rudder isn't a small affair and you managed it very well... It means that you may have some flying time... Did you survived any autorotation after a rudder blades crush on an heli ? I did, but i was at high altitude and my heli was pretty simple...
I'm not surprised, the g-force being put into the flying surfaces must have been immense with those turns. Nit that I am saying it is your fault, it should have been able to take the force, but the cable must have been a little bit brittle. A master of flying.

Always fun when the teeth are grinding during a landing. Pilot's abviously landed a few planes in his day....but there's no excuse for that near stall and wingtip runway tap.
that was a classic "OH FUCK" moment.
