  • Way out in the country !!!!!

  • Sorry, but I like Jerry's sound. However, if it makes people feel better, I do believe that Jerry himself said he sucked at pedal steel. Maybe I don't get these fine musical things, but I really loved Jerry's addition to this piece. But that's just me. Peace.

  • Always good to see JA fans yelling at each other rather than loving the music....well not so much but....lovely song.

  • This is a sweet song. Jerry is great on pedal steel. The whole song is sweet. Forget fighting, folks.

  • Thank you J.A. You are great! You are a great woman Grace. Well done! I love the painting you are doing.

  • yep i always thought this was their swan song in terms of albums.. Their best and they got help from Nicky and others..everything came together ..even Spencer got a song or 2 on it ya...

  • "he always looks so regal riding on his toad called lightning"

then, " i gotta go saddle up my frog and get outta here" mAD ;-0

  • JP's best album

  • Ahhhhhhhhhh hit the spot! Thanks for posting

  • jerry garcia on pedal steel

  • Does anyone have the guitar chords to this song? Please help, this in my favorite JA song.

  • That's a weird song.

  • Some of Jerry's earliest recorded Pedal Steel Guitar playing here. I'm looking for more.

  • What's with the Triceratops noises at the end? I apparently its supposed to be a horse or something but it sounds like a dinosaur to me...

  • @Myagooshki It's a recording of a bull and a cow mating.

  • @pardyhardly So a dinosaur, essentially. XD

  • This song is about LSD, right?

  • No...it's about a farm....

  • Thank you for posting this! That's Jerry on the pedal-steel, and according to what I've read, he said he was such a crappy pedal steel player that he abandoned it. Foolish man! Listen to this and Dire Wolf. Jerry, as always, reigns supreme.

  • @jeanhartely lol, I checked out this song to hear him on pedal steel, and he was right to quit. Not good playing. He sounds absolutely lost on the instrument. They should have gotten an actual pedal steel player in the studio.

  • @AlexNiedt What?! I think he does a great job on this! Dire Wolf too. What am I missing here, that he's so awful, but I love listening to him?

  • @jeanhartely Like I said, he sounds lost, like a relative beginner. It's like someone who only knows a small amount of Spanish, just enough to function in a real-world situation. There are intonation problems, as well. He's hacking his way through the song. With practice, I'm sure he could've been decent, but clearly didn't have the patience, hence his quitting the instrument. Pedal steel is NOT easy.

  • @AlexNiedt You couldn't be more wrong.

  • @AlexNiedt HAHA! Jerry didn't quit, he kept playing, and got better. He got good. Try listening to some stuff off of "Garcia" album. And he was good friends with the Airplane, thus why they chose him.

  • @MalawakiKID Agreed and here's the kicker. Alex is a NOBODY, a phucking NOBODY and a loser troll.

  • @JustJake57 Your reasoning is terrible. If my opinion is devoid of value because I'M a nobody, how is YOUR opinion of any value whatsoever? I don't need to be a somebody to hear better than you.

  • @JustJake57 Haha, of course. I haven't an ear nor clue about music. It's not like I own and play a pedal steel or anything, nor have I played multiple other instruments since the age of six. Shut the fuck up, you presumptuous snob. If you like it, that's wonderful. But don't make moronic assumptions about me (a complete stranger to you) because I find it lacking.

  • @JustJake57 You fanboys, getting all butthurt when someone doesn't think your hero is flawless...

  • @AlexNiedt you probably suck at pedal steel and that is why you are on here bitching your subconsciously hating on his playing because you yourself suck he may not of been that great but he gave it a go and it sounded pretty good a little on the novice side but good so why don't You shut the fuck up no one cares what instruments you've played since the age of six you're a douche and you need you're head rewired

  • @philthekeese You admit he sounds novice, yet conclude that I must suck at the pedal steel to say he's not that good. It's funny that your comments about Jerry's playing actually support my point, yet you blindly attack me like a fool. I'm glad all these people who have never touched the instrument are so sure of themselves and find it logical to assume the person who owns and plays one needs their head rewired (nice grammar, by the way).

  • @AlexNiedt i fucked up your and you're big deal i don't care and if you think your grammatical nit picking is supposed to bother me in the slightest bit you are just as naive as i thought your arrogance is laughable i assume you suck because of it a real musician doesn't go around gloating and being an egocentric douche on videos they play their instrument until they get better and better and then they die never once thinking they are that good because arrogance inhibits your abilties

  • @philthekeese I'm not arrogant; I'm my own harshest critic. But I know what I'm talking about, and there are people telling me to shut up who obviously don't. Very simple. That's all. In my initial comment on this video, I simply stated I don't like Jerry's playing here, and I wish Jefferson Airplane had hired a better pedal steel player. Didn't know I'd be jumped all over by a bunch of defensive Jerry fans.

  • @philthekeese Also, if you think some of the world's best composers and musicians (I'm not putting myself in that category, so don't even go there) haven't been extremely harsh critics, you need to read your history. :)

  • @AlexNiedt there is a difference between compose and play and yes nit picking is essential to making sublime sonic elegance that seeps through your ears with melodic and tonal excellence

  • a toad that likes suga

  • My professor for Anatomy and Physiology of the Domestic Animal asked this question as a bonus on a test:

"What species is Lighting in the song The Farm by Jefferson Airplane??"

Everyone answered "horse", but that was wrong, so they looked up the lyrics and said, oh! He's ten hands at the shoulder so the answer is PONY not horse!!

When she asked the bonus again on the final, no one else got it right.... for the second time.

  • Listen carefully. Lightning's a TOAD. :D

  • I thought Lightning was a Toad, too. They say "Toad" twice.

  • memphis 1971!! M. I miss you. Dairy Q. Raiegh rd.

  • It should be for political supremacy of USA, but in Italy me and my friends listened to Jefferson Airplane too, in 70's, when I was 10 years old. My favourite songs are lather and across the board.

  • This album's a classic, released ten years before I was born, I remember my parent's had this record when I was growing up, but they didn't listen to it, it wasn't until the end of the nineties I grew into the Airplane and this is just a gem.

  • wow!! Now i feel better!! i thought i was crazy liking the airplane when I was a high school sophmore in 1990!!!

  • I love this song so much

  • I was a baby (10), and loved this album. I bought Meet the Monkeys first, then Volunteers and Led Zepplin II...guess what kind of childhood I had?! It was great!

  • great song, great album. a reflection of the back-to-the-country movement. the airplane was an ornate mirror.

  • That's Jerry Garcia on Steel Slide Guitar and Nicky Hopkins on piano...

The Airplane's best album in my opinion...

  • @DouglasinPhily This and their first Starship album Blows Against the Empire, which also features Jerry. Marty Balin does a fantastic job on this album.

  • Ithink Nicky Hopkins plays piano on this one
