I was born and raised in Rockford, IL, and lived there for 40 years, and these guys are the Pride of the City! It was a Sunday morning, back in July of 1988 when our local morning paper had the banner headline, 'Number 1 !!', as the new Billboard Hot 100 had been published and this song was the No. 1 Pop single in the U.S.A. Stayed there for 2 weeks. In Dec. of 88, they performed in Rockford, and our civic centre, which seats 11,000 uncomfortably, sold out in an hour. I was fifth row center!
This song will either be a wonderful or bittersweet memory for me. I'm 25 and for the first time in my life found what I believe to be real genuine love with a woman...but up to now life has taught me everything has an expiration date. I am hoping with my entire soul that her flame for me doesn't die like every other woman's has.
He says "Thanks, we got a song that got played a bunch on the radio, but did it cross his mind WE REALLY LOVED THIS SONG? it wasn't the radio it was US!
@82sweetheart... I hear ya ! I was a navy corpsman stationed with the us navy seabees on deployment overseas. You cant imagine howmany young men played this tune over and over, specially when they decided to have a few cold ones. I can say that you see it all over them, I know they saw it all over me.
honestly, CT was never my favorite band, but this song kicks serious ass, and the Live version is even better than the studio. Dream Police is their best song, but dang I love this song too. Sheer awesome.
@prizinor12 Yeah I went up to Long Lake Camp for The Arts in LL NY a Few years back and after playing a few shows a lot of the band Directors really liked my performances, The owner of the Camp gave me the name The Long Lake Rockstar. I've used it ever since.

@prizinor12 Yeah it is. I went up to the Long Lake Camp for The Arts a Few years back and I played all of the Rock shows they held there. there is something weird goin on here...robin is strumming chords on an acoustic and yet at the same time i hear arpeggiated chords on the acoustic. I wonder if they were playing to a tape w/another acoustic as well as a synth...
This song just gets to me ~ and the emotion that Robin sings it with ~ especially at 2:59 and 4:24, when he sings "You'll always be the one" ~ he obviously has that eternal flame for someone ~ that aching feeling ~ because only when you've had someone captivate you that deeply ~ can you know that aching desire to hold them again!!
I remember seeing them with UFO at the Roanoke Civic Center in 1981. The first real rock show I ever attended. My friends dad took three of us. I think I still have a Cheap Trick shirt somewhere!
To answer your question, yes! I've had that feeling of despair and loneliness of not being able to have, "that someone" . Great comment-spot on 82 lady.
which unfortunately have to remind you every time I hear this song, that memory is what ruins jockabed my life, I hope never to find my way, and I love this song
Love this song, great. But the goddamn Bass player needs to do something besides stand there lke a lump of shit. He basically stands behind Robin 2 feet the entire song and doesn't move?? Little strange no?? Other than that, great video.
@MegaBob77777 not every musician can play while moving around. One of the greatest bass players of all time...John Entwistle rarely if ever moved.....
@alsaxe1 This is true. But have you ever seen Glenn Hughes of Deep Purple??? Bass player extrodinaire and a huge stage presence. I loved Cheap Trick, dont get me wrong. But the Bass player, the way he stands so close to Robins back, its almost freakish. Check out Glenn Hughes, he's awesome!
Rumours had it Robin wasn't very thrilled about the song, although it was a commercial success - could be the very reason, getting to think about it. That and Epics intentions of making CT more mainstream is thought of being the begining of the end of CTs tenure at Epic.
This is the first time I have seen this certain clip. He is dead on! The whole group was perfect. And this is a live performance. Usually there will be something a little weak, but man this blew me away.
What a wonderful song. The power of it has always blown me away. This version has feeling beyond anything I have seen before. Remarkable rendition!!! THANK YOU!
That is not sweat on his face. Those are tears of passion from going all out on this amazing song. The 45 degree head tilt when hitting those power notes says it all.
@gjohung They were in Phoenix July 2010, I saw them perform at Talking Stick and they played this in the encore set... they still have it! Wonderful show!!
Been gone awhile. Came back tonight to see how this song fares with me after almost a year ago (my last visit to this page.) Well, whether you listen to the commercial version (studio) or the concert (live) version, the song remains the same. As ever , and simply put... still this is one beautiful song.
I have seen these guy six times in the last seven years. The last time was two months ago. I sat there and thought for awhile they were lip syncing a couple of songs but i was real close and could see that they were not. They sounded exactly like they did in the 70's & 80's. They never fail to entertain me royally. I will see them every time when they roll around town. and i hope they dont quit anytime soon. Not bad and all the artists are the originals still not many bands can say that.
Took my 14 year old shopping with a group of her friends, thanks to my daughter and her fav. band being Cheap Trick, 3 of her friends left with Cheap Trick CD's. My daughter had turned on classmates to this great group and it seems to be spreading through her school. A great bad keeps on going even with a younger crowd of today.
@redhand126 , have you ever tried to sing this song? It ain't easy! As well, touring takes it's toll on a voice ... Not only does Zander have an incredible voice, he wasn't afraid to max it out on many of his tunes ... Try singing his catalog song after song, night after night, and I'm sure your voice would be a bit fatigued ... All things considered, great performance!
I really like Robin w/out the bangs... I never knew how fine he was till I was older... like a year or so ago... 46 perhaps... this video makes me want him ...
long after cheap trick got big, they were scheduled for an -after work- party on the plza- show in downtown houston. 'got rained out. that was probably a good thing-`cause they would've shut that place down.
As a ''power ballad''this was a great song, but ,this version takes the song to another level.Robin Zander sings it as if its the last time and he has to give everything he has.
@stevediorio Well said... They performed in Phoenix July 2010 and I love how they have prob done that song thousands of times, they played it as if it were the first and their last... truely inspirational!
@stevediorio There's a rumor that Robin Zander (lead singer) didn't like singing this song...If it's true...Why doesn't he like singing this?...It's a great song

long after cheap trick got big, they were scheduled for an -after work- party on the plza- show in downtown houston.
