Of course you can. Canada has a terrible football team. It's only one of your greatest wins in hockey cause you beat the best team in the world... when they were playing their worst. That's hardly something to boast about.

Althought most of those medals got Canada in 20´s , 30´s, 50´s. Since our independent state of Czech republic in 1993 we´ve got 9 medals from WC´s, the same as Canada, and 2 medals from Olympics, Canada 3. So we´re pretty even. @dark33r - World Championships are not best vs best tournaments and are about as important as IIHF WJC. Since 1993 there have been 6 best vs best tournaments. Czechs have 1 gold and 1 bronze, Canada has 3 gold, and a silver. Doesn't sound even to me.

How does this clip show anyone being a sore loser? All I see is a clip of Ryan Smyth hacking a guy's legs during the game. The game wasn't over yet. And there are no clips of any of Czech foul play, so we don't get to compare which country was dirtier.

I think it's safe to say that the game was over, and this is an example of poor sportsmanship. However those guys were under the same national hockey system as Czechs; there was NO national division in those days. Stastny brothers during their era were CZECHOslovacs- there was no national division. They were part of the same hockey system. Population argument is weak. If population determined athletic outcome countries like Australia, the Netherlands, and Norway would never win anything in any events China, USA, and Russia would win everything. In tounaments involving our best players against other countries best, we won it all in '72 and '76, lost to russia in '80, won in '84, '87, and '91, lost in '96 and '98(not our proudest moments) won again in '02 and '04 and lost in '06. No other country can put up those numbers and that's a fact you can't argue with. Althought most of those medals got Canada in 20´s , 30´s, 50´s. Since our independent state of Czech republic in 1993 we´ve got 9 medals from WC´s, the same as Canada, and 2 medals from Olympics, Canada 3. So we´re pretty even. @dark33r - World Championships are not best vs best tournaments and are about as important as IIHF WJC. Since 1993 there have been 6 best vs best tournaments. Czechs have 1 gold and 1 bronze, Canada has 3 gold, and a silver. Doesn't sound even to me.

How does this clip show anyone being a sore loser? All I see is a clip of Ryan Smyth hacking a guy's legs during the game. The game wasn't over yet. And there are no clips of any of Czech foul play, so we don't get to compare which country was dirtier.

2) Ryan Smyth started hacking at him 12 seconds before the end of the game, with Czech Republic in the lead. I think it's safe to say that the game was over, and this is an example of poor sportsmanship. And if you think people are praising you when really they're talking about how much of a sore loser you are and how you did something as sad and juvenile as what Ryan Smith, then there's something wrong with your logic. ^^

Understand the cultural difference. Sorry that I called the Stastnys Czech, they are Slovak, which now has national significance. However those guys were under the same national hockey system as Czechs; there was NO national division in those days. So, in fact, the population was doubled in the 1970s and 1980s re. the pool to draw on hockey players. I am not convinced on the population argument.

ice rinks are a factor of economics and national interest in the sport. Finland (pop. 4M) is a hockey nation, does very well, has many rinks, and has a pop smaller then Czechs. I think your 2nd forward line eg. is VERY arguable. Larionov, Krutov, Makorov were likely THE MOST deadly line in hockey until the mid 1980s.

Stastny brothers during their era were CZECHOslovacs- there was no national division. They were part of the same hockey system. Population argument is weak. If population determined athletic outcome countries like Australia, the Netherlands, and Norway would never win anything in any events China, USA, and Russia would win everything. Also, India the 2nd largest pop in the world does nothing on the world athletic scene so the pop argument is weak.

Canadian players were amateurs and not our best during Olympic games.Canada Cup onwards, our best has dominated with only a few exceptions where teams have beaten the odds to narrowly beat Canada..to say oftherwise is to be blind to the reality...look at the stats from 1987 0nwards where our top players have played.

In tounaments involving our best players against other countries best, we won it all in '72 and '76, lost to russia in '80, won in '84, '87, and '91, lost in '96 and '98(not our proudest moments) won again in '02 and '04 and lost in '06. No other country can put up those numbers and that's a fact you can't argue with. Of course, one of you commies will mention Ussr dominance of amateur hockey in the 50's and 60's when all the best Canucks were in the NHL. Thanks for a good laugh
