  • sorry kindle for me :l $79...

  • it does survive a drop or more lol

  • I liked your video but yea less talking would be great. But in my oppinion the new Nook Simple Touch Reader is better. :)

  • i was looking on videos of unboxing this ereader but it didnt come with a case

  • please,

next time you'll be providing a ereader review, less talking and more pressing the buttons would do a great job, really..

further more, before you go into that business, I recommend downloading Mobipocket Reader on your PC, trying out all the features including samples of the mobipocket dictionaries, highlights, looking up words, links between the documents and so on, and than, but only than, compare that thing with the device you have acquired

that would save a lot of my nerves

  • @procrastinator7030 You know, you are not paying this guy to make a review for you, he did it because he wanted to. This is not the channel of some gadget review site either, just a normal average guy that wanted to make a review and as he made clear, he wasn't going to dwell on the details so I don't know what you're complaining about. I wanted to see how was the reading quality of the device and this what the reviewer focused on.

  • @rpgmakr +1 to that!

  • Does this have radio on it pretty dumb to ask but i'm not too sure thinkin of getting one i know it plays music?

  • @AstonVilla82thebest No radio. But you CAN add music files yourself and play them. There is a headphone jack on the bottom.

  • @peterdoes Okay thanks man, Great review by the way I gave it a thumbs-up.

  • Amazon releases cheaper ad-supported Kindle. For details, go to Facebook and search "ereader" to access the ereader community page for the latest news and offers.

  • paper absorbs light.... that is very scientific

  • @Blindedinchains1 and wat i mean is that u can not zoom them and they are expen it crazy money to pay a sony when u can with afew bobs more buy an ipad

  • @kourosh41 its a different kind of device. You cannot compare the two. iPad has a totally different purpose and has the graphics, memory and screen to serve them very well. For pure reading though iPad is not a nice screen to look at for longer periods of time and its relatively heavy compared to this.

  • it is crap no good for maths and physics Kindle is way better

  • @kourosh41 do u mean like writing on it ? like a paper ? or wat?

  • @zombiecarrot Well i got one but the minute u want use maths ebooks make it funny it breaks the maths equations u wont be able to understand them

  • @kourosh41 thats weird well im not gettin it now ... im gonna wait n c if they improve on color eink or something ...

  • Is it easy to put your own previously downloaded ebooks saved on your computer on it?

  • @panteraNP sure, as long as they are the correct format it should be no problem

  • @peterdoes what would the best format be?

  • @panteraNP PDF always works, and for eboos i believ its epub

  • Good review now I definitely know this isn't for me.

  • Hey, good review. I wanted to ask about uploading your own PDF's. Do they look nice at any size you zoom in? Like, the example with consumer behaviour, is that your own book?

  • @TheEmeraldAngel its a bit like zooming on your computer. When you zoom too far at some point its just not goodlooking anymore. And not practical either, cause you have to start using the sliderbars to be able to read it all.

In general you'll prob choose between two settings (like medium vs small for example)

  • hows the glare on it? is it really bad to a point where u want a new one?

  • @bfung4 some ppl find it quite annoying and "unbarable". I dont think its that bad, tilting the device a bit solves most of it. But as you can see in the video, you can see your own reflection sometimes.

  • Do you drag and drop using Windows Explorer?

  • @FreakAboutSims3 nope you use the sony reader software, its like iTunes for books

  • your right the minute you wasted on the smudge factor was much more important than the hardware

  • Ouch. Down to $169 USD now.

  • @MoreCleanFun haha yeah i know and the new version has less glare too. It's tough to be an early adopter I suppose :)

  • @peterdoes Speaking of early adopters who get screwed; Next time you're standing around in line, turn around a say hi for a change. I'm the guy right behind you with his hands full and the stupid grin.

  • @MoreCleanFun haha will do for sure man :)

  • You're awesome because you have Red Dragon.

  • can u please tell me about the font size, can u increase it a bit more or what?

  • @lobnasameer YES YOU CAN. There is a zoom button that allows you to go S, M, L, XL so no worries there

  • You could do your make up in it! ;)

  • can i write on scanned pdf?

  • @thevoyager2008 yeah sure

  • hi there

i'm very interested to new sony ebook reader , Sony PRS-350 or 650 .

I want to use the device to read italian ebook.

Can you tell me if with your device (or with new one) is to possible select a word and obtain the meaning using the integrated dictionary ? thank you very much.

  • @privatemethod I cannot be sure about the new version, but in this version you CAN. that said you can only do it in ENGLISH, there are no other dictionaries integrated.

  • how long does the battery last in one charge?

  • @frankie6092 turning the device on and off takes up most of the power. Provided you dont do that too often, you can last for about a week on 1 charge.

Ive taken it on holiday several times where I used it every day and it lasted for up to 10 days.

That said, my girlfriend has the same device and her battery only lasts for 5 days.

  • @peterdoes wow unbelievable. I actually talked to one of the sellers and said that his only lasts for 6 hours of non-stop reading. Is that the actual battery life? What do you mean it can last for a week in 1 charge? Are you assuming 1 hour of reading per day in that one week?

  • I can't believe you've more than half a video talked about the design, twisting in your hands and only 2 mins spend on functions and what it can offer. What a review, people would love to see the functionality not a design.

  • Nice video!! Get an HD camera though...

  • @XxHardcorexxGamerxX Actually got one just this week :) Canon HF M36, review will follow soon

  • I have this device. And just like you said, this device is phenomenal! However, being a Theoretical Physicist, I still read books physically such as; books with equations and illustrations and books with complex mathematical variables (some of the text cannot be enlarged.)

  • @MindLifeful very true, for that kinda stuff you need an actual book. For reading just text though this does the job very nicely

  • When you take notes on pdf's , does it store the notes onto the pdf as well ?

  • @gumbolabi good question, i dont know to be honest. I would think it does though.

  • What about scrolling through pages quickly? Isn't there something like a scroll bar to scroll through pages? This is very important if you want to get back quickly to a page but don't know exactly what page it is.

  • @frankie6092 there is a feature where you can skip to a different page directly and that also includes a scroll-bar like option.

dont expect smoothness as on your computer, but it does work.

  • @peterdoes Nice! Have you tried reading technical books on it? I'm thinking if it would still be comfortable to read on without zooming in or changing the font size if it usually contains 13-15 words per line. Changing the font size seems to break the layout of the page if it contains some images.

  • I must say I agree with you on most issues. I did however, go with the $20.00 leather cover and I am very satisfied with it. @ Kindle Tv1: The memory is expandable to 16 GB per memory slot which means more books.

  • Comment removed

  • The only thing I DIDN'T like about this Sony PRS-600 is the page flicker as you turn pages. If it didn't do that, I'd have kept mine (I returned it.)

The JetBook ... although it has limitations .. has NO flicker upon page turning... you have to see it to realize what a nice thing it is to not have that flash every time you turn pages.

  • Observe the screen. It is giving a lot of reflection and you can see this guys image. I once owned one but I returned it because it is very glare. I got a Nook and is very happy now.

  • I don't know guys.I still prefer good old paper books.Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I like having a big library in my room and sometimes just sit and look at those shiny book covers(and of course, read them)."A room without books is like a body without a soul." --Cicero

  • Turn it on already !

  • I'd rather buy a windows ce based tablet. Not only can I read books but also watch movies and listen to music.

  • @ElPopularVale i disagree. The tablets have different screens that will eventually strain your eyes when used over long periods of time (like when reading a book). These readers are SO much more comfortable to read on thanks to the e-ink screen.

These ereaders are very purposely build for reading and reading alone and that is what they should be used for. If you want browsing and movies then indeed you should get another device, but you shouldnt confuse the two.

  • Eh, I still prefer the kindle. It's larger, carries more books, and has more things you can do on it. But, I do agree that the reviews were too hard on this e-reader. The glare is because of the touch screen, if I'm not mistaken. I may be, my knowledge of this e-reader is limited. Like I said, I'm a kindle person...

  • @KindleTv1 yeah the glare is from the touchscreen indeed, but not that much of an issue i think. Tilting the screen slightly and the problem is solved. And the glare only occurs when there is a lightsource directly on it (like when reading straight under a lamp).

you say the kindle takes more books, i think thisone takes 400 books on the internal memory and when expanded with a SD card it takes 3500 books. way more than youll read in a lifetime either way

  • @peterdoes The Sony PRS-600 was one of the only eBook readers which got bad reviews because of the glare issue. But the only reason it does that is because of the screen layers used to implement the touch technology and also to protect the screen. Harldy any other eBook readers have this problem seen as there aren't many touch screen eReaders currently on the market.

  • @CassettePlaya1 yeah very true. The glare is indeed because of the touch screen. BUT that said, personally the glare doesnt bother me that much, tilting the screen slightly and you are good to go.

  • i am going to touch a sensitive area, so i get it if you cant really answer but... how does it cope on illegal ebook torrent downloads? ? ? is there any software that prevents the files from being read by the reader??? Also some ebook downloads out there are scanned pictures of the pages how does this e reader cope with them?

    thanx for any comments !!!!

    cheers, good review !

  • @YIANNIS777 im not sure about the illegal downloads, but in essence it should not be a problem. The device itself does not test for the legal status of the document. If you do an illegal download into PDF, Word or plain text it should work just fine.

Scanned pages show up as an image and this device CAN handle images, but not fantastically so that would be something you have to try out. But in essence it should work decently I think

  • Hi, amazing review, thanks. Few questions - Does it remember where did u leave the book/various books? Does it lets u goto a particular page? How do u upload pdfs on it - is it complicated process or just plug n play? I also hear that it takes lot of time to boot/load books?? Thanks

  • @puneetob YES it does remember where you left off

YES it does let you jump to a page.

uploading goes via an itunes like program, easy as pie, nothing complicated, just plug and play. Think iPod, its pretty much the same.

    Boot/load is pretty much instant.

  • peterdoes, thanks for the review. Unfortunately, I felt most of it was pretty generic -- comments that could equally apply to any ebook reader on the market: document. What I'd rather see is a review that distinguishes the PRS-600 from other readers. How is it better or worse?

  • @cjeculver couldnt tell you, i dont own any others

  • @cjeculver Overall most of the eReaders are very similar. In the fact that they set out to do one main purpose, which is to replicate the look of a traditional book in electronic and digital form. Some have distintive USP's such as this Sony having a touch screen, the B&N having dual screens, Kindle DX having a large screen etc. But if all your going to be doing is reading then the majority of eReaders are great seen as they get their screen tech from the same company which is E Ink Corporation.

  • Great review I am looking to buy my first eReader and you answered most questions I have.

I would like to know how fast the reader is in turning pages and if the flash when you turn pages is distracting.

  • @muffinnman the e-ink screen has to reset itself in order to show a new page, that is indeed a small flash/flicker, but hardly noticeable and def not a distraction

  • How many time has to be a Sony e Reader in charge? Well, at the very beginning it's supposed to be in charge for 4 hours, but i don't know how many time it has to be in charge usually, because sometime my e reader has no more battery, i guess that is because i listen to music but sometimes i don't and it doesn't last as i expected, even if it is turned off... so could you help me with that? well, i just need an explanation :D thank you!

  • thnx voor de review!

too bad about the reader's glare and the poor picture display..

    thumbs-up voor je vloeiende Engels!!

  • @99rpm hehe thanks.

the glare is really not much of an issue. just tilting the screen a bit will solve most of that. Its not a picture viewer device, the e-ink screen really doesnt work well with complicated images

  • Great Review. When you demonstrated a book what format was it?

  • Fantastic technology, for 1990. Love the tiny monochrome screen. You have to be kidding me. I knew very little about these devices until I decided I might need one. I began to look into it and decided that I'm not going to get ripped off by these billion dollar companies who nickle and dime the retarded consumer who thinks this is "new" technology. I cannot image what it will be like when they finally introduce thinner & larger color screens. People's heads will explode.

    End of rant.

  • @biped19 I was just about to agree with you, but then I pulled out my dictionary to make sure I could spell "ignoramus" and you know what -- that damn dictionary is in monochrome! I couldn't believe it, so I grabbed a book. More monochrome! You gotta be kidding me! Billion dollar publishing companies ripping off us retarded consumers who think these .are supposed to be "new" books.

Chill out, dude. Ebook readers are for reading books, not watching movies.

    I-G-N-O-R-A-M-U-S.

  • @cjeculver

I'm sorry if you have buyers remorse. Now go be a good little consumer and buy the next piece of backwards technology. Your chocolate ration has been increased. LOL.

  • @biped19 Not really as old school monochrome displays still had to be backlit and the devices that used them didn't have particularly great battery life plus if left with he same image on display for very longs periods it would "burn" into the screen and have a ghosting effect (on monitors and b&w tv's anyway). Plus E Ink is a completely different technology as real ink/oil is placed within the screen of the device and electronically charged to change the display image to replicate real paper.

  • great review thanks. I have just bought one : )

  • Is it true that the screen is very reflective? That's what I'm the most afraid of; I could do without a touchscreen as long as I can read off of it well.

  • @redhot654 yes the screen is indeed more reflective due to the layer that supports the touchscreen. The smaller version of this device has no touch screen and is significantly less reflective.

THAT SAID, with some very minor tilting of the device you can overcome the reflection.

Personally ive had no problems with it at all.

  • I got a stupid question, probably....Is it possible to read pdf books with this reader? How about the book you can download from torrents? I mean is there any protection of whatsoever?

  • @jayce147 you can put ANY pdf on here. As long as there is no copy protection in the file itself you are good to go.

Same goes for word documents, so worst case scenario you have to copy paste the book into a word file.

Technically speaking you can also just take screenshots and put them on here, but thats quite a lot of work :)

  • Nice review, thank you.

  • too much talking...

  • Great review, very useful!

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you for the review! I'm going to look at this model and the pocket edition in person tomorrow. I've read other reviews that say the background of the PRS600 is a light grey, not white, and some people don't like that. Did you find this to be true as well?

  • @BearBoi69 yeah indeed it is a bit grey. But then again, what book pages are pure white??

it doesnt bother me at all actually. I think its nicer on the eyes to have a slightly off-white background.

The pocket edition will have less glare on the screen due to the absence of a touchscreen. But the size and ease of use make the 600 a winner for me.

BE aware that both of them are for reading ONLY. dont expect anything fancy on editing, marking and such.

  • @peterdoes

Thanks for your reply! I got my 600 the other day. Went into the store to check out the models side-by-side. Wow, that 300 is SMALL. To read comfortably I set the text size to medium, which caused it to display paragraphs -- not pages. lol. The 600 is great, I've already loaded it with a lot of reading.

Question: do you notice that the touch sensitive material is not totally flush against the overall screen in some places? Does not affect response, just odd to press down and feel it.

  • I got this for Christmas and i can't stand the glare on it. It's so hard to read on it i get so annoyed with it i wish i would had known this before i got it.

  • Thanks for the review, it was really interesting, I can't wait to receive mine!

  • Firstly: That's not a standard paperback book. Secondly: I am planning to get one myself.

Thirdly: You mean, 32G? (There is no 34G.)

  • Can you download ebooks and but them on it, or can you put only official "paid for" material on it?

  • @snozdog You can put any word or pdf file on it and it will work just fine. So even illegal copies or whatever pose no problems at all.

  • @peterdoes Did u have a problem reading pdf's ?? Read somewhere that there was a problem with most of the ebook readers with pdf..

  • that's a crap ereader..such a waste of money..

  • I just bought sony PDS 600 and I got so much annoyed on the glare when I read and also, the contrast is crap..I bet there's lot better out there than the crap sony...

  • Would this be good for a researcher who needs to make notes and underline keywords and can you get notes out of the reader (if you wish to print something or quote passages)?

  • @tubeMonger yes you can take notes and highlite and underline words and i will save it. Can you read these in the dark.

  • @OregonBackpacker no, you need a lightsource to be able to read on this. Just like with a real book

  • @peterdoes ok do they make a light for it to clip on or something. if they dont they should.

  • They do. It's just rather expensive, and you have to buy a "special," -more expensive- case to attach it to.

    The Cost: around 50$, inclusive.

  • I picked up one of these at the local Waterstones. I found it absolute junk.

Wasn't so much the size, but the screen and how pixelated the text looked.

It would tire my eyes within pages. I'll still be buying paper until they get better.

As a typographer its just thrown away 600 years of development and learning what is acceptable to the human eye. Even little things like a black frame around light pages, how closely the type clashes with the frame. Its hard to put into words, but it was awful.

  • @karaloca really?? hmm that sucks. I didn't get any of that to be honest. No pixelating and no tired eyes either.

But I guess what works for one, doesnt work for everyone eh?

  • @peterdoes Just seen a book on an iPad. I'd say it was 10 times better than this Sony thing. iPad will see an end to this kind of eReader.

  • @karaloca : you're clueless. the ipad is shit for text because it's nothing more than a damn lcd screen. eink is by far the better way to go, stop spreading your bullshit misinformation just because you're a clueless apple drone.

  • @WeThrowPie Grow up big boy, lets come back here in a year and we'll see which is most popular. And I'm no Apple fan either, sounds like you're quite a hater though, did your iPod break? Or couldn't you save enough pennies to buy one? An idiot can see which is easiest to read on. Maybe you have wonky eyes because that Sony thing was terrible.

  • @karaloca yes, but if they already have an ipod or an iphone, and all they want to buy is an ereader, they don't have to pay $500 on an ipad, when they could just buy this. also, you claim to not be an apple fan, but you are sounding JUST like ONE!

  • @karaloca

Well, I think the Sony PS3 is way better than the IPhone

Doesn't make much sense, does it? well, same as your comment

  • @ProdigyOnSpeed What doesn't make sense, to compare two gadgets that you read books on?

  • can you write on this?

    is easy to use?

  • it is beyond easy to use, cause it has limited functionality (compared to kindle and other newer readers) its just for reading so that makes it uncomplicated.

you can indeed make handwritten notes on it with the stylus. Its not perfect, but it works very well

  • Very good presesntation tips and explanation! I got one as birthday present from my husband. It's great for those who loves to read. It's handy, practical, easy to use. As a writer, it's a good way of editing one's work even on doc file while multi tasking.

  • does it have any major problems with displaying images ?? plz rate the problem from 1-10 1 being the worst :D thnx

  • no it has no problems showing images, BUT that said... its not made for images. itll display your graphs and such in a PDF very well and the same goes for illustrations in books, but for showing all your holiday pics its far from ideal.

    id say its an 8

  • Great! I have ordered my reader and can't wait when it arrives by mail.I allready got a bunch of Free epub files waiting for upload.

  • I liked how you compared it to other things.

  • Great review!!!

I have a 505 and bought the 600 I only had it for one day then returned it because for me the glare on the 600 was too big of an issue. I guess it's because I'm so used to the 505 and how good the screen is on that.

If I didn't own a 505 I would go for the 300 over the 600 just because of the screen glare on the 600, better still! try and buy a 505 if you can find one.

    IMO!!!

  • Really god review

You could read tech specifications all you want but this kind review is from real life.

I am now really thinking about buying this one. [They are like pretty cheap now, in fact they are a bit cheaper than PRS-505 [older] model in EU double VAT for importing from US included]

Could you show how do it process JPG or PDF ?

  • I just got a prs 600.. and I put the wrapsol (3M protective film)... 25% _ free ship discount code = chatter..

I like the feel of the protective film.. no fingerprints. protects the screen too. lifetime warranty.

Plus get a usb/charger cable for the PSP... works great!

  • the kindle does not have glare like that! haha, great review though.

  • good review! i am still struggeling to chose between one of these e-ink readers and the upcoming ipad.

  • that is a VERY easy choise: the ipad is SO expensive (even the cheap one) that you can get an eReader, iPhone and a lifesupply of ebooks for the same price as an iPad.

PLUS the ipad is not an e-ink screen, it will be like reading from your computerscreen and that is where a TRUE eReader really beats the iPad

  • I would also like to add that the battery on an iPad will be utter crap in comparison (about 6-10 hours) while most of these eINK readers last several days at the very least...usually a lot more.

  • YES very true, You can take an eReader on holiday and never charge it. The battery will last you for a week ATLEAST and most of the time even longer if you dont turn it on and off all the time.

  • Don't get the iPad. Trust me, it's a total piece of $h*t. You don't even have to waste your time considering buying it. IF it had expandable memory, it MIGHT be worth considering. But, what's this? If you want more memory, you have to pay for a whole new, more expensive iPad! Hmmm...strange. Once again, we see Apple attempting to monopolize the industry.

  • good review amigo.

  • thanks! I appreciate the comment

  • If you mean a moving text that scrolls over the screen then NO this eReader does NOT have that option

  • nice review !

  • Thank you so much for your review! It helped me a lot.

I want to buy PRS-600, it will be my 1st e-reder, but I ''ve got a question. Do you know if it's possible to install other dictionaries? Are u sure it works with any language? 'Cause I'm studying chinese and I need to read some books on that language. It would be terrible once I bought the e-reader, then I can't use it with my class notes and books :S

Thank you so much in advance. Again, thanks for the review ^_^ Really helpful :D

  • I don;t think you can install other dictionary's on it. And to be honest, i am not sure how the reader will deal with Chinese characters. On the one hand it shouldnt be a problem since it can read pf's just fine, but on the other hand it sometimes has trouble with signs like " or ' so chinese might be an issue. You have to check with Sony to be sure.

  • prs 600 could work with chinese since several mouths ago.u could visit the hi-pda e-ink part to find chinese solution.

  • You could replace firmware with any language even change fonts.

There are forums which shows how.

But since there is different controller than in older models

    This is no 100 surefire

Try ask your seller if they offer reflashing

  • 再来遍中文的。去hi-pda论坛,里面有个e-ink板块,里面就有解决方案,非常简单。读的懂我上面的话,你中文水平就ok啦。

  • is it made only for English books?

  • it only has an English dictionary. But you can read in all languages of course, just not with a dictionary

  • cool, thanks mate

  • @HealyHQ

Have you read pdf files with the reader? Do you had any problem with them?

  • YES I have, and NO no problems at all. Only thing is that you have to adjust the zoom a littlebit on the device itself, other than that.. walk in the park

  • Great video. I'm considering getting one. One question though if you know the answer... Does it connect to a PC as an external hard drive or do you need to use some Sony software to transfer files on it? Ie. can I use it easily with Linux?

  • a bit of both actually, you do need the sony software to be able to open downloaded books (as far as i know) but your PC will recognize it as an external drive, so you can prob use it this way too

  • @pjlehtim It works fine with Linux. The Sony software that comes with it does not, but that is not a problem at all (in fact, it's a good thing!) because you can use the amazing software called Calibre! Look that up, it's cross-compatible, so works perfectly on Linux. It's my favorite ebook management program. A Godsend - it really is.

  • heyy nice review i think im going to get one but i just have a question can u borrow books or do u have to buy the books to read them. and can u put word documents from ur computer on there or not? and yeah cuz im thinking of getting one

  • YES you can put word docs on, might have to adjust the zoom on the device a bit, but that works perfectly. I do it all the time.

You can borrow out books that you have bought to up to 5 people i believe. It works just like iTunes where you have to give other computers permission to access the data on the device (just like with your iPod on other comps)

  • I got one for christmas. I love it.

  • Good review, straight forward cutting the usual tedious stuff. Keep em comin'.

  • i've heard of the glare issue but didn't know it's this obvious. -o-

  • Yeah, as of this video, I'm now stuck between getting this and a Nook. That glare issue looks like it'd be a huge inconvenience if I chose to take it outside and go to the park and read, as the sun is something you can't just turn off. Still, great video, very informative.

  • should i get red or black?

    both are really nice colors

  • Good review I got mine about 3-4 days ago so far happy with it -downloaded call of the wild via google poor copy but hey it was free and I'm really enjoying it- yes small issue with glare not a deal breaker-

I got mine for 300 dollars so I guess compared to the euro price I did OK

So its a keeper I would rec this to my fellow readers

  • and I have heard s/o said it takes a couple of week for charging, doesnt it?

  • can u input ur own documents to it?

  • i would never be able to read with the glare and reflections on the screen that im staring at. i have the same problem watching tvs - its distracting

  • Great review!!

300 Euros? Wow, I thought they were expensive here in Canada.

The contrast looks quite good on your video though I have heard complaints that the contrast suffers from having the extra layer of the touch screen.

What are your impressions? Glare aside, how do you find the clarity and contrast of the text itself?

I'm in the market right now, and trying to make a decision.

    Thanks!!

  • Nice, but I would prefare more samples of demo than so much talk.

  • The screens are very fragile and damage to it ruins the reader, so I'd recommend a much stronger case, like the book armor, or a sturdy leather binding. Those pouches really aren't enough.

  • I disagree, as long as you treat the reader with some care, you'll be fine with just the pouch. If you are putting it in a travel suitcase or have it in your pocket with the risk of bumping into things, then maybe you are right. For normal use the pouch is just fine.
