  • lol if only I gave a fraction of a shit about Jay Z

  • The people who are saying hip-hop and rap are dead must only be listening to the top 100s charts. There is so much amazing new rap artists, but you just have to stop listening to mtv and start searching for your music. On another note, Jay-Z is an amazing artist, and Grizzly Bear are amazing artists.

  • @DrxPreservzz You are not smart... im sorry but there is no such thing as good rap music.

  • @Ragz25T Lol, you're very close-minded when it comes to music I guess.

  • @DrxPreservzz Why am i closed minded?because i dont like rap?Thats the most retarded shit i've ever heard.Rap is 100% bullshit.96% of the lyrics are fucking meaningless.I love every genre of music besides rap.rap takes 0 talent... it's almost the only genre in music that takes 0 talent to do.I wouldn't even consider it music. It's entertainment not art.idc if you like it but dont try to say i dont know music just because i dont like rap.Rap is by far the worst genre of music besides techno.

  • @Ragz25T Rap is poetry, by what you're saying, I don't really think you've ever heard anything besides Lil Wayne regarding rap.

  • @DrxPreservzz I hate gangster rap and obvious a lot of faggots like Lil Wayne.I used to like Tupac,Nas,and Lupe Fiasco. Now that I listen to good music that actually relates to people..i stopped listening to rap all together. Also, rap isn't good enough to be considered poetry. You can't just rhyme fat ass with cash and then call it poetry because it's not. It's useless bullshit.

  • I also like indie rock more than hip hop

  • I'm black myself and so many people are surprised when I tell them that Indie/Alternative is my favourite music genre lol... Why is it always such a big deal just because I'm black. Music should never be about race people. Music is music.

  • Hip-hop is dying and Dubstep is dying. If shit doesn't change then they are just gonna be fad genres like techno. Techno was the shit back in the 90s but people stop playing that shit in their car because it stuck to one sound. I mean of course theirs hardstyle but for the most part its the same 4/4 kick snare combo with arps bassline. If a genre can't progress it's sound it will die ppl will forget about it. I love Dubstep and I love hip-hop but they will die unless shit changes.

  • @Ccharger50 both hip-hop and grunge got popular at around the same time. i even think that hip-hop might have been first. For example, Run DMC recorded Its Tricky in '89.

  • pretty sure after the 80s hair bands came grunge, then hip-hop..just sayin Jay

  • @Ccharger50 hip hop- Rap music was around LOOOOOOONG before hairbands amd grunge-- trust me- google hip hop and rap---

  • i love how the last second of this vid cuts to the interviewer with that look on his face and then it ends. hahahahahahaha

  • Jay-z, can you please explain why your music and your wife's is so stale then?

  • I like the short weird look the guy has at the end.

  • Respect.

  • guys, sry, my English is bad; what does he actually said about grizzly bear?

  • mad fucking props.. put a huge bit of respect in my heart :)

  • respect

  • Thats whats up, didnt expect that one, super shockk! :o

about time people open up there ears to awsome music(:

    Bammmm!!!!!

  • Even if you don't enjoy Jay's music, you have to admit he's a savvy businessman and he definitely knows the music culture better than most.

  • jay z is rad.

  • too bad jay z worships satan like none other and sucks the illumnati's goat penis.

  • @dawsonscreek1000000 Too bad you're an illogical retard whom is so poor and uneducated that you believe in conspiracy theories due to the fact that you can't think on your own.

  • @shanewolfe610 lol you're trying hard to sound smart. "you believe in conspiracy theories due to the fact that you can't think on your own." what a backwards statement, kill yourself.

  • @dawsonscreek1000000 hahaha nice

  • Indie Rock will push the future of hip-hop....I don't think Jigga digs deep enough to find great music. Grant it, it's cool he's GB but for him to say hip-hop is stale even though he hasn't searched for Doom, Madib, Dilla, Guilty Simpson and others borders on criminal but I digress. He enjoys GB. That'll do Jay-Z, that'll do.

  • @MaSoisSoful I believe he is speaking about hiphop on a commercial and broader level, not niche dudes like Doom, Madlib, Dilla (who's dead for one thing),etc. Everyone knows there is more variety on the underground scene, the mainstream scene milks the same formula and is stale. How would you say he doesn't dig deep enough when he signed Jay Electronica and J Cole, those dudes are hiphop to the core. He also executive produce and mentors Lupe Fiasco!

  • jay-z is cool now;D

  • what can i say! indie music will always rock! all kinds of mainstream acts get their inspiration from indie bands, personally i´d love indie music would be more mainstream so everybody will know that great music is everywhere u just have to listen with an open mind

  • People always revolt.

  • Indie rocks the show

  • Now that's what I'm talking about!!!!!

  • I don't like Jay's music too much but he's a smart dude.

  • Jay z likes Grizzly Bear!??.... Ah man, grizzly bear are mainstream now.

(This is just a hipster joke)

  • @supermanJOEL2

    Hahah.

  • @supermanJOEL2 haha "cuz im such an individual and don't conform to others i hate it when bands go mainstream" -hipster

  • @sjr8316 This. This right here.

  • Fuck everyone who says well this made me respect him more,if you did'nt like or respect him before he gave props to a great band like Grizzly Bear.Jay Z has always been cutting edge in his own musical tastes, since day one.Go check out some of his older interviews he has giving props to indie acts before.I know he has mentioned how much he liked Pavement.

  • haha, facecheck at 1:07

  • that's awesome! I had respect for and liked Jay-Z as a popular artist before, but this makes me like him even more!

  • dats y Nicki is here. Love GB and Nicki. Both are multi layered. Only thing is that it's easily visible with GB. U gotta use ur brains to capture what Nicki is doing. Nonetheless I had to Like this video cuz of the intelligence he just showed

  • Jersey Bears need a nod. Check Donuts for Boo Boo N.J.

  • Jay Z is one of the few Hip-Hop greats we have thhese days. Unfortunately, Hip-Hop music is becoming a disgrace of what it once was in the 80's, 90's, and early 00's. It's all about the money, all about MTV, all about the radio play. Rap music is generic with it's combination with electropop and autotune. It is the Hair Metal of the 00's/early 10's. Like Grunge and Gangsta Rap, Indie Rock and Underground Rap will eventually destroy this terrible Electro-Hop autotune genre.

  • Man, Jay-Z is awesome. He's an innovator and kudos to him for noticing Grizzly Bear's tremendous appeal and for seeing the problem with certain trends in Rap and Hip Hop. GB had the best pop song of 2010 (in my humble opinion) and I don't see any sign of them slowing down.

  • Why do people listen to Jay-z? His voice is too crackley and inconsistent like he's trying to make his voice deeper.

  • lol guys face at the end

  • hip hop in the 2000's was like hair metal in the 80's. lame

  • @PabloHoney91 That's exactly what he's saying, and that if hip hop doesn't change it will be pushed out of popularity by emerging indie bands such as Grizzly Bear. (Hopefully that will happen soon)

  • @afroninja515 yeah. but i'm not sure I want Grizzly Bear to become that popular. it wouldnt be as special. it would be like if you had a friend in your click in high school and then all of a sudden he started hanging out with the cool kids.

  • @PabloHoney91 I see what you're saying.

  • you know whats neat to think about, Indie is on the rise, but what genre will occur and rise after the Indie rock period? it can only go up.

  • i really like Jay z him and a few other guys are keeping the true meaning of hip hop alive. i love that he has respect for other music thats really cool

  • hip hop really didnt take over till late 90's-2000's. cuz Grunge was popular after hair metal. more popular than hip hop at the time but hip hop was certainly on the rise.

  • Jay is right. It’s very calming to see such a star show his musical intelligence of what is happing right now. He is telling history of what hasn’t even happened yet. Because of that he will also be a part of history.

  • Hip-Hop did not take over music

  • after reading about Jay cosigning Grizzly Bear i listened to a few tracks and their music is Fire!

take that from a black hip hop head!

  • @H2T Jay-Z likes grizzly bear??

  • @cancerjuly1989 but what does he exactly say about the band??

  • @Amorstopineed Listen carefully to what he says about them, and you'll get a clear discription of why he likes Grizzly Bear.

  • @cancerjuly1989 sry, my English is horrible, but i understand a few things

  • @Amorstopineed It's okay, all you need to know is Jay Z is saying good things about Grizzly Bears.

  • @cancerjuly1989 "tons of respect"; really!

  • @Amorstopineed Thank You and have a nice day.

  • he just wants to be involved in whats in and what rakes in the money he wants people to think of him differently so he talks about indie music, i still don't like his music

  • yea thats cool that he likes indie rock and everything but Grizzly Bear sucks pretty good. He's just biggin them up cause they from Brooklyn but man their music is shitty as hell. He needs to peep better indie bands

  • @TheLesboKiller ????? name a better indie band (not that GB is the best) and I'll tell you how i feel about them

  • @EECIEI ummm?

no thank you because that would have to involve ME caring about what YOU think

    wich i just cant do

  • @TheLesboKiller wow you're out of your mind. i mean i'm not saying you have to like em, but that they suck? definitely not.

  • Holy crap...Jay-Z

Not a totally ego-driven moron like much other rappers

This man sees the truth...he's not trendy, nor biased.

  • yes

  • I respect him, but I just don't get the whole sunglasses inside thing. He talking about how he wants to rail against stereotypes and sameness, but he's sitting right there adopting an affectation.

  • @jwbrown1968 clothes or accessories have nothing to do with music

  • @sstoneinfocus Exactly. Because I was talking about him, not music.

  • but know one turned away from rock asshole! i love indie but rock and roll lives on.. trust me! stick to your hip hop, k?

  • wow....

  • cool

  • RESPECT

  • Wow. Just gained tons of respect for Jay-Z right now.

  • i hope he's right

  • jay z and eminem are two rappers that will always have my respect they both love and try to innovate and their songs are about more than just sex and money. good music is not limited to one genre, good music is good music

  • So cool to hear that coming from JayZ. Grizzly Bear are doing some great things with music of late. It's nice to see more people are noticing. Not too many people now :)

  • Jay Z is one of us.

  • Jay -Z is alright in my book. Grizzly bear Is awsome cant wait to see them live

  • This is why Jay is on top of the game. HE KNOWS WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT! He knows what the people want, and he gives it to them. That's why he's richer than all of you. (Not that it matters) But as for the people trying to define indie music, stop. You can't define music. It's not possible.

  • @chkachkabumbum It completely is possible to define music, especially indie music which you just defined.

  • @Hypocrisies How did I define Indie music?!

  • for shizzle jay..... for shizzle

  • never thought jay-z would be the voice of reason....and i think some of you people are confusing indie rock with EMO....not the same. bands like grizzly bear, beach house, and surfer blood are all indy...some people even call them dream rock...which is sort of a new branch of independent rock.

  • He's just a poser like Kanye West

  • Yeah...Kim Gordon never wrote a song about you.

  • @RubberBiscuit kim gordon is just too g

  • Though I don't really like his music, I'm impressed that Jay-Z actually has an appreciation for anything fresh and inventive. Gained a little more respect for him :)

  • word to Jay Z....

  • NNNIIIIIIIIIICCCE! CAN NOT BELIEVE HE SAID THAT ABOUT INDIE ROCK! I don't even really like Jz but I kinda feelin him now.

  • I watched this already...

  • how bout we stop putting bands like grizzly bear in genres called "indie" and instead celebrate their songwriting.

  • @barrytron3030 yeah there's allot of shit in 'indie rock'. There's alot of what Jay is talking about here in 'indie rock'. Allot of twats in tight jeans and pointy shoes, with a desperate face, trying to look meaningfull.

I don't think you can call grizzly bears indie rock. When is being new and fresh and talented going to be the new style, instead of one style being the new style.

  • "Indie rock" is too pretentious and confused for me to take it seriously. As far as I'm concerned, the intellectual underground rock movement already happened 25-30 years ago and back then we called it Alternative rock.

  • @diametricYouth This is what I have been trying to say for a long time.... Perfect !

  • Hey...respect that's all Ima say

  • @mydogisawesome888

I think people like you are the problem.

LoL i think your "stupid" movies with your "stupid" music is "stupid"

See how constructive my comment is, just as constructive as yours ;)

  • @fireking345

Check the dates on those, genius.

  • @mydogisawesome888

lol you dont get it...oh well...

  • @mydogisawesome888 Correct !!!

  • Everything popular gets old eventually. That's because pop is anything but innovative. Innovation always lies with the artists working in the underground. That's the way its been since Nirvana, and Zeppelin and the Beatles before them. The music industry makes it impossible now for any hugely popular genre to expand its boundaries, because its so powerful now and it knows exactly what formula = success = lots of money. Today's pop-rap will die, but rap as a whole will continue on just like rock

  • "this is it"..thats why he sampled the two weeks for his "new york" nonsense..it ends and begins with money.boring

  • thats why jay zs raw

  • If he thinks hair bands and hip hop were the only things happening in the 80s, he must have been living in a fucking cave.

  • @RubberBiscuit Good Comment !!! ..... I feel it is a deliberate distraction by him, To Misguide people away from where it all started "Alternative Rock" (Music)

  • @RubberBiscuit He has to know what was going on in the late 70s through the early 90s in the underground Scene!.....

  • the thing is this cunt doesnt know shit, indie rock has been around since fucking late 70s. if indie becomes a trend is becuase of ignorant fuckers like these that try get down with shit they got no idea about to try justify their existence as artists. we all know jayz just doesnt even fit a category of maybe real down to earth challenging hip hop acts who focus purely on music as opposed to image and reputation. jay z and all those guys wouldnt be shit with out the gimmicks

  • @thebronzebat

It's because you took away all my cool points.

  • The man makes sense.

  • You're trying to muddle down an argument into pretentious 'boombah' over fact/opinion.... who gives a shit really.

  • indie means independent. the band calls all the shots when recording and producing their music which is why every indie band is so different which i love. jay-z is champ for this video

  • I like Jay Z

first Linkin PArk, then Radiohead. now he is giving Grizzly respect

Maybe I'll actually stay to watch him during Coachella. Rigth after Grizzly and Passionpit lol

  • indies a dumb genre. even though every band I favor right now is called "indie" i dont buy it. "Indie" is a type of record label, not a band. Take stuff like animal collective (indie) and compare it to grizzly bear (indie) and theres almost no similarities yet they are two of the pioneers. Its a widespread term that poorly defines some of the greatest acts, and it gets a bad rep on top of the misconception.

  • @loljksmiles its what everyone calls it nowadays, just indie or indie rock

  • i agree. "indie" should only mean "independent" and NOT what style of music one plays. if Jay-Z has complete control over his artistic integrity, say, and what he creates and sells, then he's indie/independent.

  • I am so happy to hear this, as an indie/alternative/experimental rock person I am happy to hear that someone from the main scene of hip hop is getting sick of it. I hope indie becomes the norm and stays good.

  • fag

  • and hip hop came in with something different.. please, jayz is a fucking ponce.

  • 2 untalented fuckers

  • dude Grizzly Bear is amazing broaden your music Im a metal fan but I also like hip hop and music like grizzly bear I can say I honestly listen to everything (except country)

  • Country's awesome, kill yourself.

  • ok yeah im gonna kill myself because I choose to not like something I see why people like it but i just dont listen to it

  • ADMIT THAT IT'S AWESOME.

  • well this makes me respect him more

  • @Mexxico57 this makes me respect him, period. lol

  • im kinda upset indie rock is going up, cause now everyones going to want to be like them >.< and all the kids that were different are just going to be a little part of something the entire world does for a period of time. they wont be different anymore -_-

  • @xxElite94xx it would be like when grunge/alternative came into the mainstream.

  • @PabloHoney91 Yeah, pretty gay, besides the fact a bunch of new good music is being produced.

  • @xxElite94xx theres nothing wrong with being like everybody else; i mean, to think that listening to indie music makes you different is just silly. i listen to grizzly bear because they are a great band. doesnt everyone else deserve to enjoy their music too?

  • @Mexxico57 Ah yeeah you actually have a point, forgive me if i gave the wrong impression.

  • @xxElite94xx haha no problem, i understand what you meant

  • @xxElite94xx music will be what music does.

  • yes jay-z and YES grizzly bear

  • YA BOI!

  • Very well put!

  • GO GB!

  • hiphop came on the scene way before grunge did, where did yall get your info from. Hiphop started making it's mark on the mainstream around 1988 with NWA, Public Enemy, KRS,etc, Nirvana,Pearl Jam didn't hit the scene until the early 90s.

  • jay z is on his game in the hip-hop scene, ahead of the curve you know. Always has been. However he seems pretty out of touch on the rock scene. This psychadelic indie folk rock stuff with underground followings has been the "next big thing" for over ten years, and in fact may be on the way out, or at least leveling off. Strange someone so enveloped by the music scene JUST NOW is noticing this stuff

  • @masta8877 He's out of touch? i'd say he's pretty in touch, i mean he's giving credit where credit is due. Of course he is just now noticing this stuff hip hop has just now starting declining on the mainstream level for the past 5 years. Most people deep into hip hop doesnt really pay attention to anyother sound, they think this music is just noise. most rock im sure doesnt just blast hip hop all day, its vice versa, so be happy he's versitile man, stop trying to look for flaws.

  • @masta8877 To be honest I don't think it's gone up or down. The indie scene that is. Its been where it's been for some time.

Though I do think Grizzly Bear is something a bit more special than your run of the mill indie group.

  • Grunge pushed Hair Metal to the side before Hip Hop ever did. Speaking of Grunge, Pearl Jam are not Grunge and never have been.

  • @TIMOTHYSAARINEN no.. Hip hop became a mainstream success in 1988, but grunge didnt hit it up until early 90's. where do you get your information?

  • @GilletteSkater, Yes, Hip Hop became popular before Grunge. However, Hip Hop didn't bring an end to Hair Metal, Grunge did that. That's what I was talking about.

  • i got a lot more respect to him after watching this video

  • @smokelakes

I agree, I always thought he was a prick

  • Nice video. Thank for sharing.

  • indie>autotune

  • im not a fan of hip hop,but jay z is a gifted rapper, love how he gave props to GB they are amazing,ha he even dish hip hop,he is true it sucks nowadays.

  • Even though I don't personally like his music that much, I respect this guy alot.

  • Same here. He's cool and a good guy.

  • Don't tell me Jay and Beyonce are trying to steal samples off GB for some other shitty hip hop song.

  • man grizzly bear is great :P

  • when rock rule again? any form or shape lets get it back to its former glory :)

  • Indie/Alternative rock is the only real true rock there is anymore, IMO. It would be nice if we had new bands like the Who, Stones, or Zeppelin, but they were from a different time. So now we have the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Grizzly Bear, Radiohead, etc. It's just my opinion, but I what is considered today to be classic rock is the truest form of rock, and it is dead.

  • If a musical movement means to be unified, then I think your opinion is entirely valid. What Jay has stressed in this interview is that mainstream Hip-Hop has adopted a mundane uniform shape and it absolutely KILLS him; enough to write a song about it. The music that comes out of the indie scene is infinitely expansive, yet still somehow a cohesive whole.

    That's what makes it beautiful.
