Both were invented for war and hunting, yet you don't see people clammering to make it illegal. There is reasons for civilians to own a gun for non-violent reasons, like marksmanship (a real sport, that is in the Olympics) and hunting. It can also be used for personal defense like in the US (Canadian here).

Of course not. Killing with machettes and knives is more difficult and more dangerous. Therefore it makes waging war more difficult, therefore it means less people die in a given time. In addition, wars cannot last indefinitely: an army armed with knives eats just as much as a fully mechanized force.
