"mimi is a hard role to play!" This is BROADWAY, this isn't a high school play. An actor in a broadway show is supposed to sound flawless. They are supposed to be the best of the best. They shouldn't HAVE to have people making excuses for their shocking performances because its a 'hard song to sing'. My friend played the part of Mimi in an amateur production of RENT in our local town, she was fantastic - so much better than vanessa, and that's just an amateur show.
God, I can just imagine people sitting behind their computer screens and grumbling to themselves, sounding something like 'Grr grumble Vanessa that Disney whore grumble can't sing grumblegrumble Rosario grumble much better'. Give her a freaking break, it's a really hard role to do, and while others could be more capable to do it, please stop blaming this girl. NPH was the one who cast her, if there's anyone you're gonna hate on, hate on him, not the girl who I think really tried her hardest.
@hinasakukimi, actually, she was. Her portrayal of Mimi was flat and emotionless. Mimi isn't a slut, she can only capture the innocent part of her.
Vanessa always sounds nasally, like a child. She's singing through her nose, you can tell by the sound. She was constantly flat/off-key. The role of Mimi is written for an alto/contralto. She's clearly a soprano. She can't handle the big songs like Out Tonight, and that's not a point in her favor. And she messed up the lyrics, on all three nights.

@dinnybbq lets think about corporate hollywood. This role would give vanessa enough exposure for people to talk about her again and to bring HSM fans to to buy some tickets because lets face it, if not HSM fans who has she got....she also does have a movie coming out soon so she neeeds all the publicity she can get.

I'm glad a whole bunch of people are defending Vanessa with this role because everyone needs to understand she's 21 years old not 12!! She can play more sexier roles than when she was 16-17 years old. I think everyone just needs to give her a break!!
@riachelsea your right, that's my bad. I apologize. This is an iconic role that has been around since the early 90s. It's something people have grown up with also played by the great idina menzel sooo when they see it 20 odd years later played by vanessa who isnt at all at musically talented, it sucks, its sucks a lot because the new generation is going to think that 'omg this is good! she sings great!' when in reality its not good enough. she can get by doing HSM thats fine but not as mimi.
@riachelsea It wasn't so much we thought she was too young or naive to play the role, its that people like me don't believe she has the vocal talent, and after seeing the vids I still don't believe she had the voice for it. She can act really well imo, but it wasn't enough to make me tolerate her singing. And its the same for many die hard Rentheads. I was totally willing to give her a chance, I was actually excited to watch her vids, but was disappointed. she has time to grow and improve tho.
@riachelsea for some of us its not her age thats bugging us its the fact that she has no singing talent whatsoever. She doesnt have the stuff to play Mimi on stage people dont get that. All of her voice is voiced over on the soundtracks she sounds like a cat being run over live.

Mimi is a REALLY hard role to play! Give her a break! This is the first time I have seen her play a sexy role and she did a decent job.
