I spent a week and a half traveling through your lovely country, and would love to find a way to stay there longer! You literally have everything...beaches, vineyards, high mountains plains, high mountains, forests...all in an area smaller than Belgium. Lovely.

Thank you for the information. I really know so very little about my grandfathers past. He always talked about the beauty of "Yugoslavia". All he ever said was that he was born in a small mountain village in what used to be Yugoslavia. By the way our last name is spelled Mitrovich. Have a wonderful day! Stephanie
Hm, probably from Bosnia or Serbia, Yugoslavia was political formation of many nations (Slovene, Croats, Serbs, Macedonian, Albanian..). Surnames with endings -vich are very offten in Serbia. How was called his home city or village?
My mother was born in Udine, Italy, but lived in Kanal ob Soci until WW2. Her, her mother and two brothers came here in 1957. Mama passed away this past October. It's a truly beautiful place and we're planning to take her ashes back there some day.
My buddy and I are going to Slovenia and Croatia this coming December? The obvious places to visit would be Ljubljana and Lake Bled in Slovenia and Plitvice Lakes in Croatia. Does anyone have any suggestions where I should go? I've been to Europe 4 times but never the Balkan area yet I've heard your guys' countries are beautiful (one of my good friends was born in Sarajevo)
@malignantcancer2 Don't know how much time you got but if you come in december, you should visit Bohinj (near Bled), it's a beautiful place and they have a nice ski resort call Vogel. Or if you feel like sweaming, visit one of the spas with termal water. In mine opinion the best one is Terme Olimia in the town called Podčetrtek. It's right on Croatian border. Croatia si beautiful to, but I don't know what they have to offer in the winter season.
@LuckySevenSLO Thanks a lot. Bohinj looks spectacular, reminds me a lot of Switzerland (I guess they are geographically close to each other) which was amazing. It's real sad that many people in America do not know where Slovenia is (fucking ignorance), but judging by pictures and this video it looks like a real gem you guys have. You should be proud to live there.
@malignantcancer2 Heej :) i'm from Slovenia, and i live in the oldest town in Slovenia that is PTUJ...i recomend it that you googl about Ptuj a litle, its a beautiful old city :) ....Anyway i recomend you to visit in Slovenia Ljubljana, Bled,Bohinj, Postojnska jama, Koper, Ptuj..... just google it :) The moust beautiful time to visit this places is summer....but winter is to dreme :) The pozitive site in Slovenia is that you can drive tru all Slovenia in 3 hours...that means you can se a lot
My grandfather was slovenian, he unlike most people who come to my country assimiliated and embraced Australia... unfortunately he didn't really leave me with much knowledge at all of Slovenia. Anyone know a good place to start? Take into account that the only language I can speak is English.
@ValiantVendetta well to know slovene culture, you have to start with history of Slovenes - they were from 6-11. century known as "Karantanians". Thomas Jefferson's Declaration of American Independence, Democracy is based on Karantanian (Slovene) democracy (based on previous Venetic and Etruscan law) of people(Institutio Slavenica or Slavica Lex - equal to Frank, Langobarde, and other laws ). Including American inauguration of presidents is also based on Karantanian Dukes, princes and kings
@ValiantVendetta I'm going in April, hiring a bike for a month and going where ever my instinct tells me to. The place is tiny, full of things to do and see and reasonably cheap so stress less and enjoy. Ppl speak English man, just live cheap, stay at guest houses or hostels and explore the place :)
I agree will all comments that Slovenia is very beautiful, country itself is very nice. But if you live here, you are in deep shit. Policy is totally f*cked up. Many people are working like 30 years and still get only 500-600€ per month! And now ministers are trying to make workers even less worth so they would get even less money. And we better don't talk about education. The hardest schools in Europe are in Slovenia... And once you finish faculty you are nothing. We are living hard times here.
@stephan40683 Yes we regret we don't live in a communist regime that killed 10 times more Slovenians than Germans, tryed to destroy our culture, threw a lot of people in jail for innocent jokes...but apartments where cheap :)
@LuckySevenSLO Communism destroyed the traitors ... I do not agree with you that Tito's communism killed many Slovenians ... killing of such a traitor (now the nationalists) we need that now! it was the best time of our nations! <3 communism <3
I am so very very proud to be part Slovenian. My Grandfather was Slovenian then he came to the U.S. and married an american indian so I have an unusual but proud heritage on both sides.
I dedicate this video to my beautiful Slovenian grandmother who recently passed away I miss you grandma. We will always have the memories of our beautiful trip to Selnica ob Dravi, thank you soo much for bringing me there, wonderful
Panslavism is bullshit . Slovenian people are mix of different european nations , both germanic and slavic . Slovenia was more than 1000 years part of Austria , and name Slovenia was first time i think mentioned after ww1 . Slovenian culture and music is very west european . I think that jugoslavija was the darkest part in slovenian history .After ww2 communists kill thousends of so called collaborators ,and we cannot forget that Slovenia is also a mass grave of many innocent people
@MultiMetaldemon Slovenia was more likely part of Holly Roman Empire for 1000 year, along with Austria(Eastern territory). Slovenia as "Slovenija" in written form was first time mentioned by Ukrainian/Russian historian and anthropologist Yuri Venelin in 1834, but rather as geographical not political term.
Slovenian culture and mentality is very "wannabe" and Slavic, that means serf like, or in our language "hlapčevska".They either extremely like Nazis or Serb chetniks.
@MultiMetaldemon fuck u traitor... communism was the best time of our South Slavic peoples... and west europ and america they separated us !!! I hate nationalists... You are asked to help in World War II we have accepted as our brothers and together formed the country! and now you turn west, and should be ashamed ... and when we form a common state again and you'll be there (I hope) for good and honest Slovenes who know what was Yugoslavia ... not those like you!
slovenia i love it so mutch i want to live ther it,s so peaceful my father is slovine my whole family is slovine but im mixed with colombian i love bothe worlds but slovenia is better i miss it and i want to go back
Thank you for letting me know that. It has been years since he passed away. Grandfather always talked about how beautiful his country was and he always wanted to go home to visit. He immigrated with a friend of his. My grandfathers name was Traycho Mitrovich and his friends first name was Vucho but I don't remember his last name.
Mitrović is not slovene surname, but serbian (montenegrin i think). You must know Yugoslavia was formed by seperate nations (Slovene, Croatian, Serbian, Macedonian) and it was just south pan-slavic political federation from 1929-1991.
@slowwwenia Thank you for the information. It seems like I didn't really know much about my heritage as I thought I did. It is a little frustrating but at least I am learing the truth and I thank you for that.
@stephaniemitro They have a lot of Mitrovic in Serbia. Serbians in Serbia and Other Republics are all in some way Connected to Montenegro. In the old Migration Times Serbians from Kosovo and Montenegro Moved around a lot.
Thank you for this wonderful view of Slovenia. My grandmother came through Ellis Island from Vrba and died before I was born. I hope to visit this beautiful country some day.
Slovenia is a beautifull country Sloenians are hard working, good, helpfull people and most important they're not nationalists like the other Balkan states. Greetings from Macedonia
I just love this video it is so gorgeous!! Although I haven't ever visited Slovenia it is the homeland of my beloved Grandfather. He came to America in the late 1800's but when I was a small child he used to talk about his homeland all the time. I have always been proud of my heritage. I am american Indian and Slovenian now this video has really helped me connect with my Slovenian heritage.
Oh this is sooo beautiful!! My grandfather came from Yugoslavia in 1890 to escape communism. He used to talk about how beautiful it was... I have always wondered what it looked like now I have an idea. I wish I could go and visit my grandfathers homeland.
@stephaniemitro Before 1. w. w. Slovenes were part of Austro-Hungarian Empire and With its collapse in 1918, 1919 was created Kingdom of SHS (Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes that in 1929 renamed into the Kingdom of Yugoslavia - some sorts of union of southern slavs). The communist period begun after 2. w. w. after the partisan victory against nacism and fascism (Tito's regime was not "iron" one like in Russia).
@stephaniemitro you should go I went with my grandmother it is wonderful it is a country filled with love and with people who will welcome you with open arms I am proud to be part Slovenian.
@sailorkostas i am not says that slovenia isnt developed country!![no ofense] but i believe greece is in 20 place amongst 24,slovenia is in 24 like greece? just i want to know.
you have a very nice country,i like your sea,but look, just check and compere ljubljana and atens, ljubljana is much more nicer, cleaner and renewed,in economy we are ahead you, check out domestic product per capita,it is hire in slovenia than in greece,in reality it is even biger difference because your standart is fictional thats why you had extremley crisis,y are spending much more than you create
@footballfanforever1 You are not . I cant say that they moved here but they certanetly occupied a big chunk of land here. But nowdays they are buying alot of lands in Slovenia cuz where cheaper . Big problems for us, as for the ancestors from Russia well thats just sily. Not everything comes from Russia =). We have been here in ancient times, back in roman empire... Old nation young country =)
@footballfanforever1order True, the previous was unfair for slavics (500.000 in Italy), then the new one was quite good, but it would have been better to make the coast of Istria a region under sovereignty of Italy, Slovenia and Croatia (Yugoslavia back then). Let's hope for the future now :)
I heard that you have 54% forests in your country. That is great to hear. But what I wanna know is,are you people deforestating like other countries do?I want to hear it form a slovenian guy.
well, i hope this answers your question. the last reported area was for 2005 and it was 58%. In as far as 1875 the area was 36% only and it was sloely but surely climbing up to the value of 2005. Our forests are going strong man :)
@tacencanka Awesome.I hope they will get to 70% soon.I want to move there. They should recheck it though because it's been 5 years and lots of things happen in that amount of time.
was there 2 weeks ago, ljubljana, bled, vingtar gorj, postojna, predjama castle, and koper, and i loved it, you have a bautiful country, greetings from mexico
I love my beautiful slovenija more than anything in the world and i was born in australia xoxo life is not about the world cup for those immature remarks made, get a life and get off our page :) why are you on here anyway??
@joeblowmha Yes, first yanks offered him a villa on the coast of Luisiana, but the dirty Brits spilled some oil, and that is why he took our offer...so blame the brits for that

@slowwwenia Thank you for the information. It seems like I didn't really know much about my heritage as I thought I did. It is a little frustrating but at least I am learing the truth and I thank you for that.

The communist period begun after 2. w. w. after the partisan victory against nacism and fascism (Tito's regime was not "iron" one like in Russia).

yes, we have italian (west coastal region) and hungarian minority (eastern parts) in Slovenia... :<)
slowwwenia 1 year ago
@slowwwenia well did the italians like move to slovenia during world war2 and slovenias ancestors come from the russia am I correct?
footballfanforever1 1 year ago

0RobinHood1 1 year ago
@0RobinHood1
it is supposed to be 58%. since 1875 the area is slowly increasing and it has climbed up to 58% in 2005 (last data i could find).
tacencanka 1 year ago
@0RobinHood1
well, i hope this answers your question. the last reported area was for 2005 and it was 58%. In as far as 1875 the area was 36% only and it was sloely but surely climbing up to the value of 2005. Our forests are going strong man :)
tacencanka 1 year ago
@tacencanka Awesome.I hope they will get to 70% soon.I want to move there. They should recheck it though because it's been 5 years and lots of things happen in that amount of time.
0RobinHood1 1 year ago
