@shewp41 karate and kung fu have nothing to do with each other. Kung fu doesn't even mean chinese martial arts, it means 'to master after yeas of study.' A painter, surgeon. or writer can all say they have 'kung fu.' Japanese arts are called 'budo' chinese arts are called 'wushu.' Karate was devised from Te, a Chinese system. So no, karate and kung fu are different. Wushu is mainly kicking and striking used equally, karate is 60% punching, 40% kicking.

Also, kung fu is usually soft, where as karate is hard, with much more 'stopping and starting', rather than flowing like kung fu (as in wing chun for exa) Kung fu uses the centre line theory, where as karate used centre of gravity theory. They teach different techniques, you won't find any they share. They may look the same but they're executed differently.

Goju Ryu is one of the oldest forms of stylized karate, founded in 1930, and some forms of karate weren't created until 1964 (Budokan). Both this movie and the original have good and bad points. Like for example I like how Mr. Han explains his training, unlike Miyagi, who makes Daniel paint his fence, and was his while never explaining why. The jacket on and off thing he does explain. IMHO Mr. Han > Mr. Miyagi.

The movie is a bit on the long side but the pacing is well done so you never really feel that the film is over 2 hours. While the fight scenes are a bit tough they are tastefully done and never gratuitous. If anything this move is empowering for children of all ages.

The acting is excellent and Chan makes a great "old master", contrasting with his typical silly and unorthodox martial artist character. But the script was only mediocre and, honestly, I feel like Jaden was too young for a role like this. Not to say he wasn't a good actor, but he just felt like an obnoxious kid.

I say the script was mediocre because of a couple of inconsistencies that plague it. Nothing major, just themes that are dropped.
