  • Thanks for our guides but I have a problem. I managed to fix YLOD but my fan won't work anymore. I think I probably did something wrong with the re-assembly. Do you know which cable or thingie is probably not or badly plugged in to not make the fan start up ?

  • ok disregard my last comment, i just watched your re assembly update video, thanks again, im off to get a heat gun..

  • thanks for the guide, i did everything but still no luck, i dont have a heat gun so i used a hair dryer for 10mins, could that be my problem? i just wanna get my bf3 disc out, (fan test didnt work).

  • Thank you soooooooo much! I am just 16 now and I did this with the help of your vids and it was easy ! Thank you so much I owe u huge !

  • @djwhetzel Also, why does those two chips left and above the two chips applied with Thermal Grease look different than mine? Mine have two rubber pads on it.. smaller than the chip, and around it it looks kinda burnt. Yours is just silver like the other two.

  • @MegaSacra916 They made small revisions to the PS3 as time went by. You'll often find small differences like that between different manufacturer dates on almost all electronics.

  • @djwhetzel Can u use Petroleum Jelly instead of thermal compound dont have any and just got done doing the heating and everything

  • @TheChris2444 Absolutely not.

There is no substitute to thermal compound. And, yes. It MUST be used.

If you went through the trouble to fix it, just wait until you can get some thermal compound before you even try to turn it on.

If you try to run it without the thermal compound you could permanently destroy it in a matter of minutes. Maybe even seconds.

  • @djwhetzel It took me two days to do this because I had to go to Fry's to buy the Thermal Grease(you should of said that in the begining) I used a blow dryer I dont have a heat gun( you should of said that in the begining too) anyways it didnt work. ( I used 'Super Thermal Grease").

  • @MegaSacra916 I'm guessing that you didn't read the description.

In the description of the very first video I wrote, "please watch all of my PS3 related videos BEFORE starting this process (including my "PS3 Re-assembly Announcement, Update And Tips" video) so that you are familiar with what you're doing in advance".

  • I did all the three videos...I'm not mad at you but my fucking ps3 wont take discs anymore....do u know what the problem is!!!!! Its really weird you can push it in but it just gets stuck...like my game black ops!!!!!!

  • @GamePlayReviews0 It sounds like you broke the clasp that holds down the Blu-ray drive ribbon cable. If it's not broke then it may not be pushed in all the way.

I would take it back apart and double check that.

  • I just reflowed my ps3 I followed all the steps I built the jig used the foil it worked flawless!!! Great videos man!! When are you gonna do a reball? Thats gonna be my next project. Thanks again great video!!

  • So... i turned it on and it seems nice.. green light.. then the fan starts going.. and it takes off -.-

Then after a lot of commotion the red/green alternation then the blinking red light..

  • @TheDjoftheFuture It is turning on by the way.. just shortly after the "corrupted hard drive" screen is when the fan takes off

  • Holy $hit it worked! Whoever posted these videos deserves a medal!

  • for you to take the time showing people like me how to fix a ps3 at Virtually no cost except for the time and paste is exceptional, you did three time comsuming videos and put up with some people asking dumb questions, you are a star and very clever i might add, i followed the videos and fixed the ps3, thank you for all you did,

    all the best

  • Am a little scared to do this on my own. Am not sure if I can pay you to do this? I want to make sure this is done right. Am not much of a tech guy and I need some help with my old PS3 :/

  • Thanks for the walk through , it really worked.. I admit I was a little skeptical at first but I went out, bought the heat gun (29$), some thermal paste(12$) and a few hour later I did it. I even broke the ribbon clip connecting the Blu ray drive so I had to hold it in place with some tape. other then that no problems really.. Thanks man. I truly mean it . I backed up everything because I understand this is a temporary fix. Anyway take it easy .

  • I followed your YLOD fix some time ago and problem solved, it's still working 4 months later. Thanks

  • I just finished fixing my YLOD and finally got my Uncharted 3 back time to Platinum.I wanna say thanks again for the tutorials and I will fav them all and sub in case I ever need it again Thank you again my friend.

  • Hair dryers are a good substitute for heat guns. I used a hair dryer for a little bit longer and it worked like a charm!

  • @djwhetzel dude your amazin, ps3 fired right up!! Made up!!

.. Also, for anyone who might be worried about gettn there discs out, to avoid damage you can do this.

Even with the YLOD, the fan test still works, so turn the ps3 off at the back, then hold your finger on the eject button an turn the switch on the back on again, this will start a fan test, an about 10-20 seconds in to it, the disc will be ejected.

  • You deserve a nobel peace prize! My 3 and a half hour surgery ended a success even though the dining room table is covered in dust and the ps3 squeeks a little

  • DUDE YOU ROCK !

  • @djwhetzel thanks so much dude! saved my ps3!

  • You have saved my dear PS3!!!! couldn't thank you enough!!!!!!!

  • @djwhetzel I got a question. Can anything go wrong when repairing YLOD? I'm just thinking weather to do it or let someone else do it, as I never done anything like that :S

  • as soon as you made the comment about the ribbon locks mines broke on my blue-ray drive...thanks for the ginx

  • the bluetooth and wifi stil wnt wrk. i plugged the ribbon cable in and everything

  • Ok i got my ps3 back to life after 3 attempts. I had just a hairdryer but it helped. Thanks for this mister !!!

  • my ps3 got ylod 2 yr ago..so got a new one ...but 2 days ago i was cleaning and ran across the old one in the shed...was going to throw it away but stepson wanted me to fix it for him..thought about paying to fix abd just so happen i came across this..and it worked . so tnx..and now i look like the man to him

  • You are awesome dude! Got mine to work. Had the cable connected to the power button on the front wrong at first, but quick fix and works for now! Nice!

  • I'm not usually one to comment on videos, but I wanted to say that three hours ago when my PS3 first flashed a yellow light at me, I was really expecting to be looking for a new one.

Thank you for making a very easy to follow guide, without any silly frills or padding.

  • first time, works great, thanks Sr

  • My hubby followed these steps and got his ps3 up and running again! Thanks so much!!!

  • 2nd time reflow worked. Your videos are so great, Many thanks!

  • Hey man. My PS3 video doesn't wanna work. I could turn it on and off with the controller and that so i know its nothing serious. How do i reconnect that video plug-in?

  • Thank you!!!! Followed your instructions and I'm running again with a quieter system. I've had it for 6 years and look to have it longer. Side note: I have three extra screws...lol

  • dude, thank you. this helped solve my problem mere hours after the problem started. took a lot of effort but saved me over $150 and 6 gameless weeks. thanks a lot buddy. you just earned a sub.

  • Hey man first let me say out of all the ps3 fixing videos, yours are by far the best! Anyway, I have a problem with my ps3 fat boy not reading discs anymore. Can you please help me. My e-mail pray4villains1@live.com thank you.

  • Brilliant step by step tutorial I actually used a hair dryer for slightly longer and it works fine now uve saved me a load of expense and hassle , can't thank u enough!!!!

  • Thanks man it works perfectly but my fan after 60 seconds kicks on and goes faster and faster then shuts off after flashing yellow what does that mean???

  • thanks this worked perfectly !!

  • Hi mine worked for about 10 min then I got the Yellow light again do you think I should try it again and maybe try heating it longer?

  • worked!!!! thank you very much!! Wasnt even sure YLOD was my issue....but I did it anyways! :D Fan spins 10 times faster now...and is very loud....but for a free Ps3.....I can not complain!! :D:D

  • Motherboard is sitting in the kitchen cooling.. Nervous as crap.. Hope this works.. Fingers crossed

  • @cmphillips97 I wish you luck, I haven't gotten to that stage yet, I'm about to buy the heat gun tommorrow and attempt this (kind of scared to be honest) :D

  • @mygfbestbjever it worked!! :D i would recomend doing this! but just to let you know, i only bought this friend ps3 for 20 bucks but my heart was about to beat through my heart, and if it didnt work it wouldnt have even been that big of a deal. i guess its just a normal reaction.. good luck!

  • dude........ it works better than b4 thanks alot play boi!

  • um have one question y didetn you show us that it worked?

  • @1stPOTSMOKER9 I showed it working at the end of Part 2.

Part 3 was uploaded well after I made the first two videos because some people requested a re-assembly video. I didn't see a need to show it working twice.

If you read through some of the comments, you'll see that this method (if followed 100 percent) does in fact work.

    Thanks for watching.

  • @djwhetzel yep I got a ps3 from a douche bag in a trade for an radio amp....he said yeah it works perfect just is all banged up....i get it hooked up...ten minutes later it shuts off.....I followed the videos 100%(except i used the cheapest compound) and its been running since yesterday perfectly. I did have to glue the BR ribbon cause the dbag broke it realized this after reassembly. Wasn't recognizing it was there. THANKS!!!

  • @djwhetzel it dident work for me cause i got the 40 gig so every thing was diff for me lol

  • @djwhetzel WHY DIDN'T YOU SHOW WHAT SCREWS TO USE WHEN, NOOO I'M SCREWED

    HAHA GET IT?

  • @djwhetzel Just followed all 3 parts. ps3 fired right up!! got my battlefield 3 game out and used a jump drive to copy all my saved data from my games before it can ylod again! Thanks again you're awesome!

  • @1stPOTSMOKER9 he did at the end of the second vid

  • this might be a dumb question, but do you clean the old compound off of the cpu and gpu or do you leave it?

  • @SKYAURA nevermind, i did this and got my ps3 working again!!!!!! thank you sooo much

  • Thank you so much for these videos. Got my ps3 back up and running!

  • I have the old style system and your 3 part instructions got my PS3 up and running again.

  • Wow thank you for your easy to follow instructions for this process i had my doubts that this would actually work and didn't expect it to... but then to my amazement IT DID! i am truly thankful for your video... so thats why i am going to ask it seems my spindle drive for my bluray drive is no longer working because it will not take any disc my ps3 is the 80gb 4usb slot system ( Metal gear solid 4 bundle pack) do you know where i can find parts? and again thanks

  • thx. helped a lot!

  • Hi, I just followed your videos step by step, but also added copper shims to the CPU and GPU. After putting everything back together and plugging it back in, I switch the back power switch and no red light appears and I am unable to turn it on?! could you possibly tell me why/what's wrong? Thanks

  • @phoebekateeee Chance's are you just didnt plug something back in.

  • I have literally just finished using the heat gun tutorial you posted and... Joy! It actually works, I hope it will keep going for a while.

  • Hey, me and my friend did this and it worked perfectly. Thank you very much. But i only have one annoying, problem that occured after we fixed it. After about 5 minutes the fan go from normal speed, to high to full. What causes this? It's just that I cant watch movies on it because its just as loud as that cleaning function. And the console isnt even hot. Not at all! Help would be much appreciated. Thanks on advance.

TL:DR: Fan is really loud without the PS3 beeing hot. How to fix this problem?

  • It worked put now I can't go online!?! it says An Ethernel cable is not concoct. But I already did the step in the video? Help!

  • do you put the heatsink back on dry or do you put compound on it aswell?

  • @flecur08 i did it dry

  • @SSRGohan thanks

  • I have a 60 gig and I went through all your steps in the videos 4 times and still no luck. Help?

  • Thank You! This worked perfectly. I did break the plastic piece that locks the ribbon in place for the disc player. To fix this, I set the ribbon in place, set the broken plastic piece in place, then covered it with electric tape. Problem solved. Thank you again.

  • hey great video, very easy to follow, went from yellow light of death to a working PS3 once again. only thing i can't figure out why the green light wont come on

  • Anyone trying to fix their PS3 this method actually worked, except i used my oven as the heat gun. put it on 350F for 7 minutes and opened the oven door to let it cool down for 20 minutes, then took it out to cool for another 15 minutes.applied Artic silver 5 and it works! Its been onnetflix for 3 hours! Yessss1 Thank you so much!!

  • Great! It worked for us as well. A good evenings work (dad and sons) and the yellow light turned into a nice green and blue. Thanks a lot! It was good fun and my boys are relieved they can play again. Excellent video's, very helpful. Keep it up!

  • Worked for me!! Haven't played on it yet but It came on and I was able to get the game out, My boy is still in school so we will see if it works right when he gets home. He is going to be so happy. Thank you so much for this video!! Took about 3 hours for me because I don't see very well and I'm not the brightest crayon in the box but the video was EXCELLENT!! =)

  • Thank you so much! I followed all of the directions, and my system is up and running, no more YLOD!! To think Playstation charges $150 or more for something so simple is crazy!

  • ribbin cables are stupid

  • So during my dis-assembly, I had a little piece fall off from somewhere. It's a small U bracket with a hole for a screw. Unfortunately, I have NO IDEA where it fell from. Can you please tell me where it needs to be?

  • my playstation wont even come on now

  • @Comedianninja2890 Does the power come on but the touch sensor not work? If so thats the problem I am having right now.

  • @TAILFOX7546 maybe the connection thing isnt all the way in

  • @Comedianninja2890 then you clearly fucked it up, this works

  • thanks for making me waste 45 minutes of my life

    Thanks.

  • THANK YOU MATE! =D

  • i did everything step by step now the thing wont even turn on........ yyyyyyyy

  • Mine was a launch 60gb model, btw.

  • Thank you so much for this video! It took me about 3 hours, including 30 minutes cooldown time. Unfortunately, I ran into a problem with the rubber under the warranty sticker. It was dry rotten, so when I tried to pull it apart it crumbled and a huge chunk fell into the hole and blocked the screw. I had to stick a variety of sharp objects in the hole until the rubber broke up enough to come back out. Other than that (and one leftover screw! Oops!), this video series was perfect. Thanks!

  • 40gb success here too...so far...

After following these instructions we used the PS for several hours afterwards with no issues...

    COD is back on :)

  • Out of all the YLOD fix videos I decided to follow your instructions because from your voice I could tell you were for real. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. I followed step by step and was able to get my ps3 up and running again. Thanks again.

  • ive watched your video 5 times and five fixes thanks

  • hey i got the YLOD a couple of days ago and i followed all 3 of your videos and the re assembly video. the ps3 will turn on and work but it not reading any of my discs or playing any of the demos i have downloaded. what do you think is the problem?

  • I haven't done but i know for sure it will work! Thank you so much!!!

  • I have the first 60 gig model and this procedure worked, just put the ps3 on and everything seems to be working perfectly ! and nothing has been altered or deleted, thank you ever so much djwhetzel I love you for restoring my life back again you amazing man !!!!!

  • I'm in the process of reassembly and was curious: Does the PS3 turn on if you don't reapply thermal paste?

  • GAH! I pieced it back together and now it wont power on!!!

I dont even get the red light to indicate its recieving power (Yes i flip the switch at the back)

    SOMEBODY HELP!!!!!!!!!

  • @AGIANTSMURF did you plug the power cord within back?

  • thank you so much! my ps3 has not been working since march until now. i was gonna do it lazily, but somehow i bought all the supplies that you used and it works now. if i would i would give you a kiss, but no homo.

  • Worked for ours thank you so much!

  • Be that that we are obliged to make warmed the thermal dough? If yes, his walking with an oven?

  • thanks its my 3 time fixing my ps3 thanks

  • wwwwoohooooo!!!! YOU ARE THE MAN!!! starts up like a charm!

only place i mesed up during reasembely. was i Put a small screw in the wrong whole when instaling the power n eject buttons, so when it came time to put the cover screw in on that side, i was hiting the top of the screw, ill fix tht tommorow.

So thanks to your vid, My 80gig is now fixed! same exact as urs i think? now will the same procces work for my 40gig?

  • Thanks man! Me & my dad tackled this project by following all ur instructions & it worked! Very easy to follow, thanks again!!

  • I just want to say THANK YOU! I ran out and got a heat gun for $20 and some Arctic Silver 5 for $11, followed your whole process from the beginning and had success on my first try. I have a 40GB model with some slight differences in the configuration but it was actually a little bit more simplified than the model you were demoing on. Instructions are crystal clear. Easy to follow. Reassembly was also simple. Up and running again!

  • @nonlinearcreative copy and past this comment cuase i just did it on mine and it works. kind of scary because you never know if your putting on enough compond or if your over heating your ps3 but it has been running for 10 mins now and seems to be working fine. i will post back to this comment to let everyone know how long it lasted and even see if re-flowing it will make it work again. but thanks for showing this tutorial. my life just got that much more intresting

  • Thanks man this worked. I actually forgot to put the 2 little screws in the hard drive case hopefully it will be ok.

  • it worked for like 14 seconds and the ylod came up again :(

  • shit ! my ps3 broke yesterday and mw3 is in !!!!!!

  • @GioRgosPaokAra842 good MW3 isn't that good of a game, SKYRIM IS DA BEST!

  • you are officially the most awesome person of the year. you just saved me a lot of money and fuss :D

  • Cheers man! everything worked out better than expected!

  • Great set of instructions. Had the videos playing (and pausing) while I operated on my PS3. Plugged it back in and was very happy to see it come back to life. Thanks :)

  • this is not guaranteed to the fix the yellow light right? i remember you said after you fixed it the first time it got the yellow light again, and this is the second time you had to fix it?

  • If I send my ps3 to you, will you fix it please?

  • Very helpful this guide I watched it as re-assembling my PS3 it all went smoothly there are some small differences to mine which is 40GB such as the eject and power switch is part of the main board I spent good 10 minutes trying to find it before realising.

  • Many Thanks, Great video's awesome, Fixed PS3 here.

  • YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS it worked thank you

  • Worked for me

    Thank you

I used a 40g, which had some different parts, but your guide helps a lot.

  • hey im reading all this comments that yuh people left saying that iht worked for yuh as soon yah pluuged iht in , so how cum iht dint work for me , i did everything and the yellow lighht still cums uhp ?

  • @hustlintimez504 did you use the right paste?

  • @Slapshit7x17x90 and please speak english not that slang shit bc it's hard to understand what the fuck your saying

  • @Slapshit7x17x90 i think so its DYNEX , in the store they told me this is the best 1 ?

  • hey i did everything in this video step by step but it still wont turn on , what might bge wrong ?

  • @hustlintimez504 it can be a few thing either your system has more problems, you messed something up while fixing it or you didnt do the heat gun part correctly. thing is its hard to say what exactly is the reason.

  • Just fixed my four year old 60gb model which yloded using this method. Worked perfectly, you're a genius.

  • WOW, i just did this and the PS3 started right up. Thank you so much for the tutorial!!

  • @guygirl182 I hope you're referring to blink-182. Anyways try turning off your ps3 using the back switch put your finger on the eject button and hold it there then turn it back on. That's how to eject a disc in a YLODed ps3 maybe it'll work.

  • I got skyrim and the next day my ps3 YLODed... But I'm still working on my ps3 so far so good I appreciate these videos I'm 15 and they really help out.. One thing I'm confused about though is what way should I apply arctic silver 5? I saw you put it in 4 small dans and a slightly bigger dab in the middle.. In other videos they spread it. Can it be done either way? And how much should I use your way?

  • @sidnessidi a tiny bit. he is actually used to much and it's better to spread it.

  • @Slapshit7x17x90 I did use too much in this video. I actually stated that in the annotations.

The whole spread vs bead thing has been a topic of discussion for a while now. I always say to use whatever the manufacture of the thermal compound says to do.

The brand that I use in the first video said to spread it. Arctic Silver 5 (which is what I used in Part 3) says on their web site to use the bead method. That's why I used that method for this video.

    Thanks for posting.

  • @Slapshit7x17x90 And to add to that, some people will argue that if you spread it you will always get air pockets.

Bottom line, always check with the manufacture to see what they recommend and use that method just to be safe.

  • how long does your ps3 last after doing this???

  • Didn't work :(

  • Maan , it didnt work with mee ! :((

    PLZ HELP MEE !

  • I've in relation to the video's with the hairdryer assembled the ps3 and when the heatsink wouldn't come off just put the hairdryer on the bottom of the print, 30 sec's on each of the 4 spots and 8 rounds. Left it for half an hour. Then for 15 mins in the place of the missing fan. Blow it cool for 15 min and let it cool good. Mine ps3 is working again!

  • Thank you so much... Worked as soon as I plugged it back in.

  • Wow!!!! You are my hero
