Create an image in Photoshop or the Gimp and inset it as it's own track. It will show up just like our logo. A little Googling can tell you more if you're interested.

Garageband sound effects are great because they are easily available and royalty free. They may be relatively common but why not use them?

Yea, setting scratch disks is always a good idea, especially if you edit off external media a lot.
