Helicopters flew right through the night from various bases (Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Pretoria) to Durban where the necessary rescue and medical equipment was loaded. The choppers left Durban well before daybreak and planned their arrival to coincide with first light. They rescued all the passengers.

I did two cruises on this ship when I was a kid. Back then she was still the M/V JEAN LABORDE and cruised from France to Madagascar. Very sad to see this video.

Having been a ship's officer, including cruise liners, I can tell you that Greek crews, especially the officers are the worst in the world. Apart from this tale of cowardice I know of at least three other incidents where a Greek ship's captain has been the FIRST to abandon his sinking ship, leaving passengers to die. In one case the captain said that he thought he could "co-ordinate the abandon ship actions & the rescue efforts better from the first rescue chopper to arrive on scene". COWARDS

Having been a ship's officer, including cruise liners, I can tell you that Greek crews, especially the officers are the worst in the world. Apart from this tale of cowardice I know of at least three other incidents where a Greek ship's captain has been the FIRST to abandon his sinking ship, leaving passengers to die. In one case the captain said that he thought he could "co-ordinate the abandon ship actions & the rescue efforts better from the first rescue chopper to arrive on scene". COWARDS
