  • Let's not forget Hoagy Carmichael who wrote this and other great songs like, "How Little We Know" sung by the sexiest and most beautiful woman in the world Lauren Bacall - and if you're watching Lauren give me a (Ba)call ---sry sry sry. Back to our muttons. Dinah Shore. Lovely voice and sensationally beautiful woman. Not a patch on Lauren though.

  • Loved her voice for as long as I can remember. Thanks for sharing,

  • I still remember the day she passed away. The TV announcer (cant remember his name) had to stop and compose himself after the 1st few words. The passing of an era and a nice lady.

  • It doesn't get better than this. THIS was real music- classy, soothing, romantic. Music in this day and age will NEVER compare to this, it's all just noise now.

  • what turntable do u use for recording this? a normal 33rpm turntable?

  • I was only 4 or 5 when this was popular. It makes me nostalgic, wishing the times with my family in the 40s would come back. Beautiful version.

Dinah Shore paper dolls were very popular.

  • The best recording ever of this song from May 1942 - the Amazon re-mastered recordings are excellent, but don't get the itunes recording - it's terrible - much too harsh and distorted

  • As far as I'm concerned I LOVE the "scratchy" sound in this recording - so it's not "perfect" studio quality - it lends a sense of "time" to the recording that brings back all kinds of memories of LONG ago days gone by. If you grew up in the sixties or the seventies, these kinds of recordings were around your house.

  • Dinah Shore----what a fantastic woman...Chevy show...her talk show...women's golf....to mention a few. Thank you.

  • I can't believe that people still talk about her being part black...LOL...who cares...she was a beautiful lady...and so if the black people liked her or she played to them who cares....her voice and musicality showed that she is talented...but, I had heard those stupid rumors when I was a child, too....but, who cares...I don't she's my favourite singer of the 40's.

  • Just beautiful!

  • Still my favorite female version of this song - Dinah makes me get all misty-eyed...

  • PERFECT! (:-D)

  • She also recorded it with Red Norvo in a late 1950's album for Capitol..

  • :) So wonderful. :)

  • mighty purty

  • The scratches add charm to this beautiful interpretation which was in fact used by Clint Eastwood in one of his films: thank you for posting, I surely love it.

  • from winchester tenn .when she was little her dad would bring her into a little cafe there ;put her on a table and say '''sing Marie Rose'''..judy garland also lived down the road in murfreesboro tenn..[THE GUMM SISTERS]

  • @mlkemper my dad was from shelbyville.

  • I like the scratchiness!

  • "Skylark" is a bitch to sing. It has great lyrics, but that fabulous melody is complex. So here's Dinah Shore making it all sound easy and too beautiful. Best version I've ever heard.

  • the sound like burning bondfire;s remind me the longplay. Perfect song.

  • Thank you for this beautiful rendition!

  • One of my favorite "canary" songs. Until now I had not heard it by Dinah Shore. Her voice has such a comforting feel about it, not unlike Bing Crosby's. Thank you for this beautiful upload.

  • She sure was beautiful and had a great voice.

  • Thanks - Youtube is opening up a world of recordings I have never heard - I love this version of Hoagy Carmichael and Johnny Mercer's 1941 song.

  • This is such a beautiful interpretation of a wonderful song.

    Thank you for sharing.

  • Thank you for uploading this- this is awesome.

  • It's awesome...thanks for uploading it.

  • Beautiful

  • What year was this recorded? I have to admit that I've neglected listening to Ms Shore's earlier recordings. I only remember her as a more mature singer when her vibrato was much wider and I found her more difficult to listen to. I should have known to listen to her earlier days..... I have, however, always respected her as a fine artist. I'm glad that I stumbled on this recording. Thanks for the post!!

  • it's a lovely version of that song .. and yes that is what matters , thanks for posting it .. even the scratches are good to hear .. I love them .. hehe .. :)

  • you, jackgardner13, have achieved what I hope wil inspire future music producers to realize those of us who have grown up with and thouroughly enjoyed talent such as Dinah and Frank and Hoagy to get over the marketing of what makes them money and give us back music, not screeching, screaming angry people making unpleasant noises accompanyed by dreadful electric amps.. Les & Larry Elgart recorded some amazing instrimentals that make anyone just want to get up and dance! thanks for the memories!

  • lovely singer and great song

  • This is just pure, unadulterated loveliness

  • To Urracal..., Do try and sing this melody before you dismiss it as "simple".

  • Simply...honest, gorgeous singing.

  • im only like 14 and i still think this is really beautiful.! :)

  • I've never heard of her until now. I'm fan now.

  • I love the scratchy sound sounds like a real record

  • great song, very evocative.

  • beautiful rendition of this classic, but simple song. Thank you for posting it.

  • Stunning!

  • Johnny Mercer, unsung hero /lyricist of movies' music 40s-60s. Saw a docci on him last week and cant get this song out of my head.

  • One of the best vocals I've ever heard. Simply beautiful.

  • Lovely Dinah Shore.......

Quite possibly the very best version o this song.

  • Love this version. Thank you so much for sharing.

  • Dinah, ahh! Her voice is like butter that just smooths those scratches right over.

    thank you for posting this.

  • Very very nice,

I prefer Helen Forrest version though, with Harry James on trumpet.

  • I watched a ton of other singers sing this song but I like her's the best. So soft and sincere, I love it.

  • It's beautiful, thank you! Brings tears...

  • The quality of her voice is matchless. The best!

  • I think this is my favorite version so far. So beautiful. Thanks very much.

  • So many versions.

    Thanks for posting this.

  • Gorgeous version of Skylark.

  • I've never listened to this before, but it strikes me what a singer from the South can do with melodies arising from tradition there (and of course, Johnny Mercer & Hoagy Carmichael)... can't say I've ever heard Billie Holiday sing this song but I'd love to hear it. So much of our hearing is from language inflection... singing truly reflects that. She's perfectly wonderful here.

  • Beautiful---thank you so much for sharing this. I loved Dinah as did my parents--who would have heard this playing just as we have here. What a nice thought.

  • JCMarra: What an insightful, intelligent comment that gets to the heart of just how darn GOOD this is. Wish there was more of YOU on YouTube! Thanks!

jackgardner13: Thanks for this yummy post! And DON'T YOU APOLOGIZE for those scratches! We don't care!

Mothra is sincerely pleased..!! Peace to all!!

  • she is exceptional-she is SUCH an underrated vocalist!!! thanks for posting--scratches and all!!!

  • I first heard her singing sleepy lagoon wow wonderfull !

  • Thank you for all of you have commented on this video. I am removing all comments about Dinah Shore's race. While that has been a hotly debated issue for many years, this is not the place for that discussion. The beauty of the voice and the talent of the singer are really all that matter. Dinah Shore was a lovely and talented woman and I think that is what she would like to be remembered as.

  • @jackgardner13 As others have said already, there's no need for apologies. You've done a big favor for many of us. I believe I was a pre-teen when I first heard this, and can't remember who the singer was, but that was more than 50 years ago. I just remember that it touched me then and still does. Thanks!

  • @jackgardner13

    Truly so!

  • @jackgardner13 ---------- :)) hearing the scratch of a REAL record made this song - that I adore - more beautiful. I miss those old records, havent owned a record player in forever. Thank you for this lovely recording :) posting it on FB <3

  • I'm so glad you uploaded this. It's really difficult to find a version of this song that is true to what was written! And she, of course, has an amazing voice. I agree that the scratchy quality of the recording just adds to it

  • You're are absolutely right about her interpretation. Most contemporary singers butcher this song with jazz cliches. I grew up watching her TV show and I never knew how good of singer she was.

  • Unvergesslich. Vielen Dank.

  • jackgardner13, the sratch gives it lil' somthing extra, I just love this recording btw, thanks for posting it

    ~jd

  • From first note to last, perfect. Such control of her tone and vibrato, such ease in the high register. So beautiful. THIS is the kind of singing to listen to and learn from. No sweetening, no composite tracks, no doubling, no mistake-disguising reverb. Just the voice.

Crackles, who cares. Unmistakable technique shines through.

  • one of the most beautiful interpretation of this song, /bow Dinah and thx for uplaoding!

  • This was recorded in 1941, around the period she was starting to be noted as a vocalist in her own right (at the time, she was getting recognition for her appearances on NBC Radio's "CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY OF LOWER BASIN STREET").

  • dinah shore was my brothers favourite singer now i see why!!!

  • this is almost the perfect amount of crackle, just need to turn it down a little. records like these aren't right if there's no crackle at all.

  • Dinah. When she passed on I remember the newsmans shocked expression. She was so alive.

  • how did she die?

  • Dont know, but she seemed eternally young.

  • She passed from cancer.

  • Kudos for the Maxine Sullivan and Dinah Shore dialog. Beautiful rendition.

  • I love Dinah Shore and this is terrific, but check out Maxine Sullivan's more personal rendition; that one is very, very special.

  • Thanks so much for this video response; you are absolutely right this is a wonderful interpretation too. After the references made to it in the comments I had got curious, so I'm very happy to hear this gem.
