i live in naples, florida (southwest florida) and there are quite a few passes in the area that ive been fishing. Weve mostly been getting snook, trout, and 1 small tarpon. Never a redfish. We always see huge bulls swimming just along the beach where the pass empties out, but they never seem to bite. Any other bait tips?
@bwynne00 You can use it on the beachside areas, offshore or in the bays and rivers for Bull Redfish. They WILL come to it if they are in the vicinity. The best chum to use in Georgia for them is cut bait pieces and menhaden milk or menhaden oil chim dispensed through an IV Drip.
@20mks I have never used them as we lack the grass flats as the gulf coast and some east coast areas offer with thousands of the pinfish. The Redfish has a main diet of Menhaden, Mullet and Crabs in our area. I bet if the bite is on, they would eat them regardless, but it wouldn;t be my first choice..... Are you on the East or West Coast?
I knew of an old man who used a crab quarterd up and HE says that a squirt of WD40 on the crab is a great attractant for Reds. Have you ever heard of this?
@bunkman64 I have actually heard about WD40 being used and finally tried on some landlocked Redfish and it worked. I have not yet tried it in the ocean., but I need to.....
sorry to blow your email up here, but i also have made a ghost shrimp pump.. thats fun there too.. do you ever use ghost shrimp as bait? if so, what luck have you had with them.. do you know what fish will take them? i hook them through the end of the tail then through the carapiece, laying that hook out the bottom.. anyhow, hope to get some advice from ya.. fish on
hey richie, texas gulf coast here.. just got a cabin onbolivar pennisula, so i got gulf access and galveston bay access, great big nice somewhat shallow bay, oysters, with the intracoastal too. where would you concentrate, also home made bullred chum? and if you could explain you 'georgia' rig, i couldnt see there.. your 'carolina' was.. hook, 3 foot line, knot, sliding weight, and final knot? you want to have the bait free float inbetween 1 to 4 foot, in shallows?
final knot can be a snell knot, clich or other. If you want the bait free, simply rig it carolina style and let extra line out so the bait swims free of the weight and into the current.
@richielottoutdoors clinch and snell knots are no good for 100 plus pound sharks man, those knots will slip tie a Rapala knot or san diego jam knot, never fails
@5tonyvvvv -- Never broken a snell. We catch sharks up to 350 pounds on 50-80 pound main line and 250 poud mono-leader. I can post those bull shark videos if you would like to see them. However, everyone has their opnions on knots. Rapala is an excellent one as well.
@5tonyvvvv They're only needed in our area due to all the sharks we catch. We need some type of leader for them to keep our tackle from being stripped constantly.
@carpetmonk --- I usually fish directly on the bottom where redfish will be feeding. There are known for their scaveging abilities to sniff out a bottom bait from a long way off. So, I don't really free float them, so to speak. Leaders are short and I use heavy weight to keep them pinned to the bottom. GA has7-8 ft. tides, so the water MOVES through our area.
About the carolina, what you said and then snell knot or clinch works just fine.
Menhaden most of the time. Menhaden, Mullet and fresh bluefish are better than crabs or anything we have found.... been experimenting with it for 20 years, and those are the best baits here in GA, no question.
what rod is that?
