I only heard the song once or twice on radio.....but it always stuck in my head....and here it is on youtube....brilliant!....."goat like smell"....and the kicker..."100 % acrylic!"....LOL
Ha! I absolutely love this, especially since a good number of my friends growing up were guys. Wonderful. I really love Meryn's music. He is so talented. :)
this song is amazing. the first time i heard it, i was a tween watching 'life on venus ave' with ziggy at 12 noon on city tv....ooooh memories...oh precable days
this song is amazing. the first time i heard it, i was a tween watching 'life on venus ave' with ziggy at 12 noon on city tv....ooooh memories...oh precable days
This song made me laughed then, and laugh out loud now! What great times I had then, and am having a good time listening to the song and watching the video for the first time today! GOOD Stuff!
This video is fun ~ and I have Meryn Cadell to thank for getting me to start buying CDs. I was a cassette guy (thank you very much) and resisted CDs for a while, then heard 2 of Meryn's songs on NPR one evening, went out looking for it the next day, and all I could find was the album "Angel Food for Thought" on CD. This was the first CD I ever bought. The year was 1991.
As someone else said Meryn Cadell is now a man. He teaches songwriting in the Creative Writing department at the University of British Columbia - my friends have had him as a professor!
I so much wanted to wear a certain boys sweater in my jr. high school years, and this song brought me back to so many memories fifteen years after the fact. I loved this song twenty or so years ago, and just remembered it today, looked it up on youtube and ,surprisingly it is here! Wow!I don't know who to thank!
I agree with you. This song is hilarious. Teenage boys do smell like goats. They stink! How do I know? I went camping with my classmates and I had to share a tent with some guy. His sweaty clothes stink up the tent! But you know what? He's so manly!! Girls love masculine men.
This song was inexplicably pulled from rotation after about 4 weeks on the radio, and they wouldn't even play it upon request. (at least in Seattle) And the records were no longer available either. Nice to find it here in its entirety. Great song!!
Now if the sweater has, like, reindeer on it, or is a funny colour like yellow I'm sorry you can't get away with a sweater like that.
Look for brown or grey or blue. Anything other than that and you know you're dealing with someone who's different. And different is not what you're looking for.
i think i was like 18 when this song first came out, they actually used 2 play it on the radio and i used 2 stop doing whatever i was doing jst 2 listen to it... i loved it, glad i found it after all this years!!!!
The first and last time i heard this song was with one of my cousins i was like 9 years old, and i havent been able to find it till now.. 20 years later... wow what a memory... LOL
Except we didn't go on a camping trip...my friend just took it from him and shoved it over my head. xD Then I didn't give it back afterwards. But otherwise...scary accurate.
Your surprised!! Omg we LOVED this song in school by we I mean my self and all the other non popular "artys" kids. No one else seemed to like it. The didn't get it we thought and I think now that it's so funny and btw boys do smell like goats lol
I remember hearing this on the Dr. Demento show. What's been driving me crazy is the music in the background. Is it a sample from an older song... 50's or 60's perhaps? If it existed before Meryn used it, what's the original version's name?
I could play the instrumental over and over on the way to work... or I suppose I could work up my own version. /shrug Good track!
Loved this song! My friend introduced me to this album my freshman year of college. She recommened listening to this track first. Isn't this the song that prompted Weezer's song, "Sweater Song--Undone"??
ho-ly FUCK! i forgot about this song too lol, it's so oldschool, i remeber hearing it on the radio and asking my mom wat it was (i was in like grade 1)
I feel in love with this song/spokenword when a dance class at my high school put on a dance number to it. They pumped up the beats a bit, like 'heart might *burst*' was really emphasized, but other than that it's the same as this.
Yay Meryn Cadell! You were so ahead of your time and I - as a teen girl at the time - really appreciated something so smart and full of satire coming from "my" little POV.
Congrats on the CD reissue! I've been singing "The Pope" to myself all day, with him arriving today.
The truth of the matter (for fabric snobs)is that some materials are better than others - more authentic, rugged and true. And, if a guy is wearing acrylic, he can't be all you think he is!
100% wool is what you want!! Think about those classic fisherman sweaters or icelandic sweaters. Hope this helps.
The cd has been reissued on my label and is available everywhere or directly from the Bongo Beat Records website (cheapest option for a physical cd). Thanks. Ralph at Bongo Beat.
@BongoBeatRecords thank you SO very much for the rerelease!!!!! i've been a fan Meryn since i saw this song on video hits, got the follow up disk. I woke out 2 copies of it. ppl still laugh / look at me like i have a toaster on my head when i say " apescentglloriolla" or many other of her/his words.
All I know is that is all I remembered of the song, and it took me forever to hunt it down, then FINALLY I found it. I remember hearing it when I was in Jr High and thought it was great!
That's a very good question. I always wondered that myself. The only "gloriola" I know of is a printer font. I definitely get the "ape scent" part though! (and kudos to Meryn for having the courage to come out as a FTM transsexual!)
Meryn Cadell may "speak" her way thru this song but she had an amazing voice - her album BOMBAZINE is fantastic. And yes, she had a sex change back in 2000 or so. But an amazing songwriter and performer!!!
I love this... a friend of mine did a reining freestyle (horse riding thing to music) to this a few years ago and I haven't heard it since. It's pretty much awsome. lol
I loved this song when it came out! It was so true to life for a teenager. I don't think I've ever seen the video! I think it's a hoot! You have to remember the era and the budget she was on.
I recently read a huge article on Meryn that says she's had a sex change operation, and while what she does with her own life to make herself happy is fine, I just feel the song has a little less impact on me now. Of course, I'm way past my teenage years now too, so it's not so traumatic. :)
I so hated middle school! Went to a K-12 school and it still was a different setting once I started HS. It reminds me of hanging out with friends (and having a crush on a guy in my class!)of mine during their lunch hour so I had to skip Algebra! LOL. Hahaha! First saw the video on MuchMusic in 1991. Couldnt remember the artist and looked for it for years.
Listening to it now after all these years I laughed at the line,"The sweater had that slightly goat-type smell all teenage boys posess"
My brother has been telling for years that I smell like a sheep, well into my 30s, and didn't know what he was talking about...
