For those who don't know: the plants with the spores caused the bizarre behaviour of the crew. For a Vulcan to go against their culture (almost religion The Code of Surak) would vastly puzzle a being knowledgeable about Vulcans; hence Kirk's distressed countenance-- or maybe it was gas?
@miladynana I hate how they never explained what emotion Kirk was feeling, like why did they leave such an important part of info out of the episode??
@daskulp - Yes he did. In a special called Star Trek Memories (which you can find on youtube) Nimoy said he liked stories where Spock got to have some kind of emotional release.

This was always one of the saddest episodes of any Star Trek episodes for me.
Spock is 'as happy as Larry' and square Captain Kirk takes it all away from him.
