it only counts as a stroke if he makes any contact with the ball whatsoever...you can literally take a swing at the ball and even if you completely miss, it won't count as a stroke unless you make contact with the ball

you should be in cotrol of the club enough to be able to stop where ever you need to even unexpectedly because you shouldnt be putting in so much effort you cant control the club head
