  • neji?

  • Wonderful video and interesting practice. Which is the name of this Aikido style ?

  • Muy buen video!!!. Excelente tecnica.

  • gr8 gr8 gr8

  • astonishing

  • This is NOT fighting. This is only dancing.

  • jExactly right! Aikido is not fighting not in the least... although I would not call it dancing. It is just what it is ai ki do... aloha

  • @GreatUmbe There where was book by a well known teacher, Terry Dobson, that came out in the 1980's called, "It's a Lot Like Dancing: An Aikido Journey". Martial Arts, music and dance have a connected history. see Native Americans, see India, see Africa, see Bruce Lee's background is in dance, see Capoeira.... etc. Each martial art has it's own rhythms and spacing. Leading/connection/feeling is important in aikido as it is in dance such as Tango. Fighting is something else as any soldier knows

  • @GreatUmbe You are correct on several levels. Aikido is NOT fighting. Aikido is harmonizing with your partner's momentum and intent - his Ki. When Aikido is practiced, both partners uke know how to fall and how to roll, so you don't see too many crippled practitioners crawling to the edge of the mat.

  • @GreatUmbe If you practice "fighting" with your partners, you will run out of partners very quickly. In Aikido, we don't "fight" - if we are being thrown, we fly, and if we are throwing we let our partner fly. That way we can practice again tomorrow.

  • @GreatUmbe

what is fighting? Hittin' the air with punches and kicks?

  • @GreatUmbe that´s exactly what it´s all about. being so harmonious that it looks like you are dancing, when actually, you have the power to break your oponent´s arm with just one hand. Aikido is all about energy flow, and when you mind is open enough, you can feel all the energy around you. After all, Aikido is not about fighting, because you never attack, attacking is beig out of control. But you can defende yourself more than well with this. Fighting isn´t just chuck Norris.

  • @GreatUmbe the difference between dancing and aikido (one of the differences) is that in dancing the center of the movement is between the partners. in aikido the center of the movement is within the nage. this is what makes it look ridiculous, because you can't spot the difference just by looking at it.

  • Wow, Aikido dance with Baroq music, and the spinning top theme.... a tad camp, but great!

    Pure pleasure to watch.

  • Tell me this is Kashiwaya Sensei.

  • @tverhoeven yes this is Kashiwaya Sensei some time around 1980 or so when he was teaching in Colorado. Was a student film project.

  • Aikido is breath taking

  • What music is this?

  • pachbels cannon

  • Canon in D

  • beautiful aikido, thank you for posting this excellent video

  • really beautiful!also the music is nice...thanks for posting

  • WOW!! Beautiful!!

  • Beautiful

  • Beautiful! I never thought of a gyroscope like this before.

  • This was filmed in Hirata Sensei's original dojo at the edge of the International District and Pioneer Square in an old bowling alley. This is a sweet memory for those who had the pleasure of training there back then. It's nice to see young versions of some old friends and teachers. Domo arigato!

  • @nathan981 is Michael Scarey in there?

  • @bunkafashioncollege Hello! I think this film was made before Michael Scarey joined the Seattle Ki Society. I believe Michael is still active in the Seattle Ki Society today (2010). We practiced together "back in the day." He's a good guy and a friend. Best wishes to you.

    Kokyo dosa, anyone?

  • Awesome! I thought this was lost for sure! Last time I saw this was on an early video streaming website over 10 years ago. I have been bugging Kashiwaya Sensei for years to find that video. I think he intentionally lost it because he doesn't even like videos only a few years old of himself. One of my all time favorites. Reminds me of my early days and a time of intense enthusiasm. I always wanted my students to see this. Now they can!

    Many thanks for this.

  • Thanks for the video. I enjoyed it. Happy New Year.

  • Sorry I just posted something a few second ago, but I forgot to ask something... can anybody tell me the title of the music playing in the backgroud... I really want to find it. Thank you!

  • Saitoh I believe it is Pachabel's Canon playing in the background.

  • Yeah, tat's Pachelbel... maybe D-minor canon? =) I'm not sure...

  • Wow, Kashiwaya-Sensei's techniques are so amazing in this video. I had the pleasure, or should I say the honor of being uke on one of his demonstrations before and the way that he executed his koteoroshi on me was without a doubt amazing... however howcome his koteoroshi on this video seems to be a bit more "flippy" kinda reminds me of the kotegaeshi from other styles.

  • I think he's performing kotegaeishi here. Though he was throwing koteoroshi into "flippy" breakfalls last time I saw him. Hopefully I'll get the honor of being his uke next month! :)

  • to clarify things this was taken in 1973 making it 23 years old. I look at it from a point on how things used to be. Kind of like looking at old tapes of Tohei Sensei we certainly have progressed.

  • Probably one of the finest examples of Aikido on the web.

  • Yes, his aikido is rather different now. We were watching a video about ten years old or so of Kashiwaya doing a demo with some of my instructors, and well, it was much more direct maybe? I've heard that this video was shown to Shaner sensei as well, and he was saying that it wasn't fair 'cause they're not supposed to throw that way anymore, and Shaner wanted to! :)

  • Yes exactly I spoke with Kashiwaya Sensei last week in Japan and he told me he was a sandan at the time and 23 years old. He also wanted me to add the disclaimer that his aikido is much different then this now. : )

  • In what way would his present day aikido be different? Thanks.

  • considering he was Sandan in the video and is now hachidan. Think of adding 23 years of training, teaching and refinement that is the difference.

  • Actually, Tracy, if this was done in 1973, that would make it 33 years old! Great video.

  • exactly... damn can't add.... : ) thanks

  • @eanderson1234 Actually, his current aikido hasnt changed all that much. he still has the smirk.

  • Hello all, I had the pleasure of discussing this video with Kashiwaya sensei about a month ago. He tells me that it is from 1972 shortly after he came to the US. It was filmed in Seattle by one of his students who was a film student at the time. The dojo was located in an old bowling alley. Sensei says that he still has the 9mm version sitting around somewhere, and was amused that it is up on the internet.

  • That's Kahiwaya Sensei's hands winding the gyroscope :)

Tracy, when was this filmed? The late 70s? During his Boulder, CO days? Good to see vintage footage. His grinning during the free-form jo work is pretty funny.

  • very graceful and efficient. where does Kashiwaya sensei live?

  • Kashiwaya Sensei lives in Seattle Washington and travels mostly teaching aikido fulltime. He moves better then any person I have ever seen in person and I have seen many of the top teachers today.

  • This is Kashiwaya sensei, 8th Dan in Ki Aikido. It shows!

This is the most perfect video showing Aikido as "the way of harmony" that it claims to be.

I'd say he's right up there with Tohei Sensei and of course Ueshiba Morihei. It's so smooth and beautiful! All Aikido should look like that! :)

  • Interesting video.
