A thought for the families and children who were were encouraged to return to the US before 30 days following their demise. Imagine, you loose you loved one, your father and then you are forced to leave your home while you still wrestle with the pain of loss. That is no way to show the fallen or their families support.
A memorial stands at the point of impact for anyone who wants to pay their respects.
I knew this crew very well. The callsign was Duke 27. The crew was CW4 Gary M. Farwell, CW2 Clayton M. Hickman, and CPL Matthew Clark. They were flying an IFR approach to Coleman Army Airfield, located in Mannheim, Germany. I especially knew CW4 Farwell really well. We had served together in Iraq ( 2003-2004) and Afganistan (2005-2006). He was a great man and exceptional pilot.
@thatman64 it doesnt start anything, i dont fly blackhawks, but i have flown in them and i am a pilot. they normally switch a computer, or arm weapons/control surfaces
There isn't a wall between north and south either. You're being a German idiot (Ich weiss etwas- and proclaiming that to the world), it's a cardinal direction that indicates location in generalities that everyone understands, vs. stating a city name that few know other than people familiar with that place. How about they say a plane crashed in Najef Iraq, how many would know where that is? But if they say "Southern Iraq" you have a clue, don't you?
At 12 seconds you can see the co-pilots right arm, why is the "Starts and Stipes" the wrong way round? Ive seen this before with US forces, regardless of how the flag is "flown or hung" ant the stars always meant to be in the top left????????? Any Americans your views are welcome. Kristian UK.
@tanyano9 its meant to be facing forward in the uniform, who came up with that idea? who knows probably some high officer in a chain somewhere in the states
@tanyano9 I'm pretty sure the backwards flag is meant to resemble the flag as it is being carried down the battlefield. Imagine someone running with a flag on a pole. Its going to be seen as backwards as an effect of the wind resistance.
@tanyano9 The blue field of stars is always supposed to face forward on uniforms--it would be the same way on the left side of an aircraft or vehicle. Google "C-17" and "images" and you'll see the flag like that on the tail on the left side of the aircraft. If you look at the flag on a page (web or print), we read left to right, so the blue field is facing forward and it looks like it's supposed to. Looks "backward" here and on vehicles, but it's correct.
went down on a dark snowy day nearly 2 years ago. Soldiers from the whole Battalion worked over 3 days with little rest to recover and guard the wreckage and bodies, till investigators could get there. Salute gents. The rest of you assholes with nothing good to say get the fuck out. I was there. you werent shut up.
Blackhawk aircraft are actualy very reliable, and designed for good crash survivability. I can see two reasons that they seem to have a bad record. Firstly, there are a LOT of them, and they do a LOT of hours flying. The second reason is their application. Blackhawks tend to be used in a lot of high risk flying operations, pushing their envelopes as far as possible. Same rule applies for choppers as for anything, the more and harder you use it, the more you break it!
@hawktalisman Thanks for that. However I was not contesting the reliability of the Blackhawk. My comment was directed and the producers of the clip for the dull delivery of the commentary. But thanks anyway.
@hawktalisman Shoot a helicopter with an RPG and bad things happen. They tend to hover to drop off cargo, so they're at risk to it. That's a flaw of helicopters, not the Blackhawk specifically. People don't really understand that. Same with the Huey.
@John234pwns Agreed. I would include being shot at by RPGs in the whole "high risk flying operations" thing. Fixed wing aircraft are never moving slow enought to be as tempting, or as easy, a target as helicopters, and there is the old axiom that fixed wing aircraft by nature want to fly, and it takes a reasonable amount of bad things happening to stop them from doing so. Helicopters by nature do not want to fly, and will stop doing so at the first opportunity!
Why is it that Black Hawks always crash, two Black Hawk helis have gone down, with no reason, one in Italy killing all crew and one in Germany also killing all crew...

@FrontPlayer01 "western germany" means "the western territory of germany." it's not the same thing as "west germany." every place has a western side.
