It's a lose-lose for both parties. It's not like there is any winner out of this. One person is paralyzed and one person lost his career and will be spending some time in prison. The cop was found guilty and has been sentenced to jail for 11 years the maximum sentence which really should be longer as the motor cyclist is now wheel chair bound.
Hopefully he'll sue the police department and city and win and at least will be set for life financially.

If you review the video closely you will see that the officer does not turn on his lights until after the biker's speed off. If you note the time at the bottom right you will see that the biker's stop just maybe 15 seconds after the lights come on (takes anyone a few seconds to pull over). You will also notice that the man was shot just about 7 seconds after the officer came to a complete stop!

Like you said 7 seconds is nothing to comply with an officer. Hell, I'm hard of hearing so I would of been thinking "what did he say". I too would of turned around and have when pulled over on my motorcycle. I wear a helmet so I typically take that off as soon as I stop so I can hear. I feel that Officer could of shot any one of us motorcyclist...he has an itchy trigger finger and should pay the price.
Tragic, insane, this makes my hear hurt. I've been in situations similar to this and have trained my soldiers to NOT react the way this policeman did. Granted there are many differences between law enforcement and military but the positive ID of a weapon is a key parallel between us. This makes me ill to think that I had served 20 years of my life protecting the freedoms granted in our constitution, and then watch them blown away in 6/10 of a second.

Ottawa Hills is a prime example when you research Toledo metro area. B&E's in Old Orchard area was on the rise in the 90's, however just blocks away in Ottawa Hills was down. It's a lose-lose for both parties. It's not like there is any winner out of this. One person is paralyzed and one person lost his career and will be spending some time in prison. While I'm not saying the officer doesn't deserve it, I'm simply thinking about his family. I'm sure many of you wouldn't have enjoyed finding out you were no longer going to have your father around because he messed up and now you only see him in prison. It's sad that one poor decision can ruin so much so fast.

The cop was found guilty and has been sentenced to jail for 11 years the maximum sentence which really should be longer as the motor cyclist is now wheel chair bound.
Hopefully he'll sue the police department and city and win and at least will be set for life financially.

If you review the video closely you will see that the officer does not turn on his lights until after the biker's speed off. If you note the time at the bottom right you will see that the biker's stop just maybe 15 seconds after the lights come on (takes anyone a few seconds to pull over). You will also notice that the man was shot just about 7 seconds after the officer came to a complete stop!

Tragic, insane, this makes my hear hurt. I've been in situations similar to this and have trained my soldiers to NOT react the way this policeman did. Granted there are many differences between law enforcement and military but the positive ID of a weapon is a key parallel between us. This makes me ill to think that I had served 20 years of my life protecting the freedoms granted in our constitution, and then watch them blown away in 6/10 of a second.

Ottawa Hills is a prime example when you research Toledo metro area. B&E's in Old Orchard area was on the rise in the 90's, however just blocks away in Ottawa Hills was down. When the guy on the bike turned and moved his arm, the cop obviously thought he was reaching for something, but pulling the trigger was definitely the wrong thing and the cop needs to be punished. This cop was either scared, excited or something. Just to clarify, though...um, no IRS, you don't just wait until you see the gun. If a cop with a drawn gun says 'don't move, let me see your hands' and you dive one of your hands into a pocket or jacket, you will, rightfully, get shot.

@GinXYZ actually his right hand was sitting on his right thigh and he shifted his body to see what was behind him and hence his arm shifted as well, but never left his thigh. The lawyer that's trying to say he "pulled his arm back" in some kind of threatening manner is full of it. You shouldn't have to worry about a cop "jumping the gun" during a standard traffic stop.

I'm just saying that between the movement of the guy's arm, the angle the cop was looking from and the apparent insanity, fear or just plain stupidity of the cop made the cop's brain think the wrong thing. This is a cop that definitely should not be a cop and definitely needs to be punished for what he's done.

@MsTree1 Cops are not trained to shoot shoulders, wrists or hands...they are trained to shoot center torso/center mass. There is no such thing as being trained to "shoot as to debilitate". That's why the guy is paralyzed...the cop shot right where he was trained to shoot. Unfortunately, this is a completely useless cop that needs to be kicked off the force and punished for this act of sheer stupidity.
