I love seeing Miles in an alert, vivid, happy mood. Check out the AMAZING Bill Boggs interwiew on Bill Boggs dot com. You'll watch Miles discover a very young Joey DeFrancesco live on air! ("Who's your organ player?!?")
I would love to see the performance they did in the studio that was never aired. Maybe Kip knows where it is in the vaults. It would be great if they sold it and those performances with Dizzy, Scofield, Santana, etc. as CDs. They'd make a fortune, and the public--especially the younger ones--wouldn't be so in the dark about their music history.
@SmartalecFILMS Yes, I have this original program on tape (as well as Night Music) and you're right, there wasn't a performance. I took a guess from the way he referred to Foley off-camera and how when Foley was on camera on the program, he had his unplugged lead bass with him, that there may have been a performance (common with many of the other musical hosts) that simply was never aired. Only Foley would know :-) Thanks for your reply and once again for presenting this material.
we will forever spend our time on earth trying to be as cool as this brother here...no one can ever be more cooler and chill in the cut as miles davis......i could spend the whole day just listening to him speak on different subject matters, and not even pick up the horn, and it would all be nothing short of astonishing!!!
I have the entire program somewhere. It was a great time with Miles talking about his art and giving a demonstration of his approach. The only thing is that while Foley had his guitar, both of them never performed--at least it was never aired if they did. One of the things he stated was that he hated the Decoy album, feeling it was something cheap that Columbia put together. He had hoped Spike Lee who did the Tutu video (now removed from YouTube) would use the colors used in the film Wolfen.
@Guitfiddlejase I misspoke....On this program he stated that he hated the VIDEO that Columbia did of the song Decoy. Actually, I think he stood firmly by the album. He was tickled in one interview where the interviewer picked up on his subtle horn line dubbed beneath his main horn line on the song Code M.D. Including interludes like Robert 415 represents a unique way of thinking. Freaky Deaky is like a reference to earlier tunes like He Loved Him Madly. There's consistency in Miles' development.
"And we might hook up a concert with Gil Evans here. If they get the right stage with Gil, and Herbie and my old band. If we could hook it up we gonna do that. So there you are, coffee anyone?”
Oh yeah man, I wished he could have hooked up that concert.
I love this man's voice!!! Lord......I've been watching this vid and a couple of others just to hear his voice. Something very soothing about it.......
Wow this is great, I have a few segments of this on a decaying tape. It is great to see this man in action like this, it was in his later days and the heels of his comeback branching into movies. Of course this legend died too young like they all do.
In '87 at a mere 8 years old I found interest in Miles Davis and Charles Bukowski. And never stopped.
On the few clips I have there are some rare jazz tracks I have never seen elsewhere.
"Coffee anyone" what a kick in the balls but cool as hell!
Thanks for posting this. I have the whole episode stored somewhere along with other VH1 episodes of "New Visions" featuring Santana, Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Williams, Sun Ra, Don Cherry, Dr. John, etc. VH1 had different categories of shows: Jazz, World Music, the Soul of VH1 (with host Vanessa Williams)....What the **** happened?!!!
@Guitfiddlejase The thing is that back then, those music TVs were still young and they still tried to experiment and find new auditories and so on... now they are way more closeminded, cautious and even don't consider about experimenting. But TV is dieing slowly anyway...
Can you imagine? They used to have GUTS on TV. Once upon a time, that is...

His clothing designer from Philadelphia that he mentioned, Patrick D. Bushnell, died back in 1999 at the age of 46.

This clip keeps me the impression that Miles was actually much friendlier and enjoyable to be with than many people were led to believe.

@postatility His misanthropism is a myth. Read "Miles" in his own words. It's his autobiography from 1989.

@Streamline09 My God yeah! What did happen indeed?
The same thing with A&E back then. They showed jazz every Sunday night.I saw Art Blakey,Richie Cole,Grappelli..
...and then in 1994 Bravo showed that Miles "reunion" show from Paris in August(?)1991
Now it's all reality TV.I guess our culture really is dead nowadays.
What I would give to turn on the TV and see stuff like that now.
