This is stupid. You didn't say anything other than this is good, they are bad and are lying to you. How about some cold hard facts. And you are right SS does pay its own way. And it does help many Americans. But it is IOW's. The government takes money from SS account and "invests" it in government bonds (aka IOU). Money taken in from government bonds are used to fund other projects. So in an indirect way SS money is used for other things. There is no bank account for SS. CONT IN REPLY
@HumanNonPerson CONT FROM PREV COMMENT The argument of SS isn’t really about does it work. It is more of can it be done better? Should I have to give my money to the government and wait until I retire to get it back. Or is it better for me to invest the money myself? Or can we do both? Can you choose SS and get the benefits or choose not to get it and not get its benefits. We pride ourselves on our free country, but is it really? I prefer the freedom over the security.
I strongly believe SS is necessary and a right, for those who have paid into it. I have problems with the part of SS that grants money for disability to the millions who can work. I know of many people who abuse the system. If that was closely monitored, billions would be saved monthly!
What kind of idiot would voluntarily choose to give the money taken by FICA to the government than put it in their own bank account or invest it?
Social Security the anti stimulus.Takes money out of the market and gives it to people, who have a huge nest egg of money from saving their entire lives like responsible adults.
I am not saying take the benefits away from those who have paid in-that's insane- but I am 17 years old and I do not want to be part of the next generation entitled.
@giantkingfan10 This is the problem with the young. They all think theyll just save AND BAM, make their own SS. Theyll have a nice savings going on. I tell you my friend, youll see. Youre only 17, you got the world in front of you, but savings isnt as easy as you think. College will put you in debt (If you go), your car might break down, your house needs repairs. Hopefully ull have a good job, but college will put you in debt HARDCORE.
@giantkingfan10 I agree, I think optional is a good plan...JUST MAKE sure you got a savings plan!
I just worry bout people who are TOO far in to go optional, you know? 40-50 year olds who have DONE the system and now it is too late for them, ya know? That is my concern, people who are too old or to hurt to work and have paid into the system. I wanna make sure we take care of them!
Your intentions sound good, but it is no one's business whether I save for my retirement or go on vacation or buy a sports boat. I earned the money and I will use it the way I want.
For the record, I would save rather than splurge, personally.
Social security is so stable and has such a big surplus that benefits for the last 2 years have had to remain constant.... But if social security worked, they wouldn't need to make a video to convince the general population or "those of lesser intelligence" to keep paying for it, actions speak louder than words but not to sheep...
@Andyterranbase1 ... ummmm ... i think the reason they "have to make the video" is not because Social Security doesnt work, but because Social Security DOES work but there are so many LIES spread about it not working. I think you missed the point, completely. No wonder our country is in such a sad shape, fella.
@Andyterranbase1 - I'd say you're describing yourself. You surely can't be too bright if you advocate against your own best interest. Only a fool wouldn't want to have income in their old age when they're incapable of getting out to make a living. Social Security is paid for by each of us over our working life. If you did not work and you did not contribute, you get nothing, at all. Your wage is based on what you paid into social security. It does not contribute to the deficit. Wake up silly.
@Andyterranbase1 ... regardless of what the federal gvt owes or does not owe SSA, the point is that social security does work. The federal gvt dipping into the Social Security Fund is another topic..
We have paid for Social Security, it is not an entitlement program. You're SS wage is based on the amount of money you contributed over a lifetime. If you didn't work or worked for wages "under the table", you won't qualify for SS benefits. It's one sure way of getting a pension in old age.
Stand up 4 your RIGHTS Americans. The REPUBLICANS have been FOOLING YOU for the last 30 yrs. SOCIAL SECURITY*, (SS) , is NOT an entitlement! SS HAS A $2.6 TRILLION SURPLUS.*SS CAN pay every claim at least until 2030. SS DOES NOT increase the federal budget by one cent! Tell the REPUBLICAN GANGSTERS & THEIR WALLSTREET BANDIT FRIENDS that you will FIGHT any PRIVATIZATION OF your SS pension. You will FIGHT ANY REDUCTION IN BENEFITS. YOU will FIGHT any change in AGE REQUIREMENT FOR SS BENEFITS!
Since more half of the wealth in this country is controlled by a very small number of people, and those people pay almost nothing in Social Security. If the cap is eliminated, it will not only fix the shortfall but can allow for in across the board percentage cut. That money will be a stimulus that is given to every worker across the nation and would be far better for the economy than the wealthy tossing their cash away in Monte Carlo.
Are you suggesting that a government program would expand from it's original mandate? How novel! Have you ever checked to see how much you paid into the system vs. how much you will probably take out? As of now I've paid about $88,000 into the scheme, ahh system. If I collected now I would get about $20,000 a year, so after 4.5 years I would collect all I paid in. Ya, there would be some interest on the money so stretch that a bit. You will probably collect more than you paid into the system.
If our Legislator stops raping SSI and giving it to those that did not pay single penny into the system we will not need to worry that system will run out of money.
I have been paying into SSI for over 50 years and now some SOBs want to take it way from me, be ready to defend yourself scum bag!!!
They forgot to mention that since the program began the amount people are forced to pay into social security has increased by a factor of at least 15 times. To keep it going we will need to pay more, receive less benefits, increase the cap, and retire at an older age. This series of adjustments will need to continue into the future until the public cannot afford to have anymore taken from there checks. In the end it is just a government sanctioned ponzy scheme.
While I agree in part, can I just say that REMOVING THE CAP does not actually solve the entire problem when it comes to brass tacks. In order to keep benefits at the same level in the future, it may also be necessary to raise the tax.
Here are the real facts from my RMI program at GSU......
Retirement benefits are predicted to exceed revenues in 2023; assets (loans to the government) will be exhausted by 2036.
SS disability trust fund will be depleted by 2017.
Currently, there are 2.9 workers for each SS beneficiary. This this will drop to 2.1 workers by 2035.
Projected actuarial deficit over next 75 years is $6.5 trillion or 2.22% of taxable payroll.

@shadydawg555
So how about making it optional?
Then you will see how many people opt out. It is not the government's job to make me or anyone else save for my retirement.
You cannot control the way I use money for better or worse.
