Well... I'm gonna perform it this speed for now. But one day, I'll do it more up to tempo. Otherwise, slower tempo doesn't take away from the energy, and particularly in your performance imo. :)
um, i just wanna say that anyone that has issues with your tempos must not be able to play it well enough themselves ;-) Nice job!! This is NOT an easy piece to play, as seemingly easy as the flute part can appear.
i think that the tempo was a bit slow in the first movement, but you are one of the few flutist besides nina perlove i have heard that plays this musically. its beautiful.
personally i think you did a wonderful job. i'm not sure what some of these other people are saying. i played this piece a little while ago as well, (just the first movement), and i wish i had a better flute so help with my performing.. just not in the budget right now. haha. shoot me, i know... i play a Gemeinhardt... haha. what kind of flute do you have?
What's the tempo you played this at? I'm playing the first movement for an audition and I REALLY like this tempo - everything is clear and concise! Thanks in advance, wonderful performance!
you have a great energy and strong technique. You can keep that energy w/o having to move around so much and that'll fix a lot of your cracks. I'm playing this piece in school right now, it's hard not to dance and move around, but it really helps your sound all in all, in the end.
I think you're absolutely amazing. You have a beautiful tone. You play this piece so well. I love this piece and i'm going to play it for my lmus. I loved it! Keep at it. :)
@flutethomas i don't know man write him a letter yourself if you're so upset about it. that's what my teacher told me... she's a college professor and a pretty reliable source.
My teacher played this when earning her doctorate degree and she wrote Muczynski a letter about the tempos. His metronome was broken when he wrote the piece. Your tempos are correct.
Wow, not only are your articulation and technique fantastic, but the expressions on your face and your whole attitude make this so fun to watch! Bravo!
I love your embouchure on the lower notes of the piece. Muczynski is really unknown, but i love him his pieces are so avante-garde and uncaring, I'm currently learning this piece at a slightly faster tempo than you're playing it but you seem to actually have the hang of it, may try it slower sometime...
@kongabeatz not to nay-say or anything, but it's always best to learn things slow and work them up faster for me. But what do I know? Good luck this is a tough one.
I wonder, have you ever considered using a Foster Extension? With your clear tone and great articulation clarity, i am curious to hear how it would sound with your flute... I have one and never play without it now...
white belt? ;) lol. The first movement is a bit slow for me, but you're a very good player and great to watch. I think we may be generaltional friendly rivals :)
Great job. I love Muczynski's pieces for flute. You have the perfect technique for what all of his compositions require. When I studied flute in college, I tried to get my hands on everything he did. You sound GREAT! :)
I really like how you play it. (and all your other videos..) It is very mysterious and intriguing. Lot better than others version.
I wasn't happy to play this sonata, but after hearing you, I'll happily practice it :p
I also like your attitude. You don't seem to be nervous at all. Do you have any trick ?
The only thing I don't like is the way you hold your flute. I'm not a "parrallel to the ground flute" fan, but a little bit higher could make you look even more better :p
Wow!You have an amazing tone and technique!I'm inspired...I'm doing the first movement for solo & ensemble and love to play along with your video to practice (although I don't do it NEARLY so well!)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
wow...im impressed you finally wanted to play something at a reasonable tempo. are you trying to finally play evenly??? ive notice u have a habit of playing....everything...too fast. its a style i guess. but...actually, this is kind of slow...too hard for u???
Sorry for you not liking my tempos, but it's a pretty subjective thing i must say. I've noticed....... that..... you have..... a very rude...... tone. So i'm not gonna comment further, but again sorry if you do not like my tempos. Others do
:DDD ur amazing at flute!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :P i play flute and im a guy too.... and idk if i wanna major in music or not, but you're definitely an inspiration! :D most ppl think that flute is gay, but nahh lol, wat kind of flute do u use? and how old are u?>
He has one of the first publicly recorded videos of this Sonata on youtube, has accomplished things that others couldn't even dream of, and he doesn't need imbeciles like you trying to hurt his feelings because those imbeciles like you have some insecurites in their flute playing(or attempt there of :p)
@Carnivorious I like your tempo. It's not the 'half-note=96' suggested but it's clean and works very well. I have too often heard people make a butchery of it at a faster tempo. As for lepantog33's comments, I find that so many flute players are needlessly rude. They will take a perfectly good performance and attack it without mercy. Perhaps a lack of security? Keep up the great work!
@Carnivorious Go You! :) lol you made... a......very valid.....point.
Btw your flute playing is fantastic! I look up to you in the sense that you are kinda amazing at the flute ..... I'm a Junior ( 11th Year) in High-school in the U.S. and I'm playing this piece now. Hope I can play it as well as you! I hope you go far in life!
If you play things slower you can actually feel the music with more ease! Also, if you think playing things slower is easy... well... you're so wrong! Playing this slower requires a cleaner technique and control because that mistakes are more noticeable
dude wtf is your problem? are you just attacking him because he's insanely talented and you're jealous or what? let him play the way he wants! and what do you mean "finally play evenly?" everything i have heard so far has be incredibly accurate and even so stop being a jerk to him.
Carnivorious, you are an exceptional flute player. You inspire me to work even harder than i already do at getting better at flute. Keep posting awesome viideos. You are truly talented and gifted!
@lepantog33 Who the hell do you think you are? I would love to meet you in real life and hear how you play. I can't imagine it would be very good given your arrogance.
@Carnivorious I personally think you played a bit on the safe side, but I still think you did a very admirable job and clearly looked like you were enjoying the performance which was fantastic to see. You have very good stage presence, a rare quality in my opinion. Keep up the good work, i think you will only go higher from here. Btw, your pianist was very good! It's always a privilege to be able to work with a fine pianist like that.
I love this sonata. I learnt the 3 preludes for flute and now trying to master this sonata, completed mvt 3 and working on mvt 2 but love all of them...just speed gotta master!
oh, i like this one...nice job! I was recently given Muczynski's "Three Preludes" and I fell in love with the style...it's almost jazzy (isn't he a jazz flute player?...the composer, I mean). Anyway, I agree, I hope he gets played more often...
btw, did you miss the last high f in the 1st mvt? just curious. maybe i just didn't hear it. i love the 2nd mvt, it sounds kind of "irish-y" on the majority of the 1st pg (of the flute part)!!! and then a kind of modulated version at the beginning and end..cool! great playing too!

Bravo. I like your first movement tempo is great. It indeed has lots of energy and allowed for a jazzy feel in some spots. Great dialogue between you and the pianist.
I love watching you perform on your videos! You have so much energy, and the way your facial expressions coincide with the music...it's just priceless.

i'm a junior in college and i'm thinking of just relaxing this semester since i'm studying acocunting and it's taking up all my time. i think i'll do this one for one of my 5 pieces for flute lessons. anyways. great sound. so much energy. i've never heard of this piece. great piece.
great piece!! i played in on my senior recital. thought your tempo for the 1st movement was a tad slow needed a bit more "drive" but VERY nicely played.
okay.. well. As I said before I think this is (maybe not correct according to the score) the best tempo. It gives a certain energy which you cannot obtain by playing it in "the original" tempo. That's why.. Thanks for comment anyway! :)
Hey awesome job overall. The first movement was a hair too slow for my liking, and the second one a bit too fast, making the piano part sound rushed and the whole thing just goes by to fast. Loved the playing though on both instruments.
Yeah, okay.. I liked our tempi though. It makes the first movement very rythmic in a sense, and that's what i think it should be like. Second movement is often heard played too slow, and I like our energy.
Oh my goodness! You are amazing! I was looking up this piece because for our New York State Solo Festival competition, this was one of my choices I was down to. And wow! I think I'm going to lean towards Doppler's Fantaisie Hongroise Pastorale, but I definitely am going to work on this one at some point.
Last year for the solo competition I did Enesco's Cantabile et Presto, and also just worked on Debussy's Syrinx.
