Carlisle took it as in, Bella died, therefor, when Edward found out, since Bella was the love of his life, he saw no reason for living without her. So then he went to the Volturi. actually, not to be a smartarse, stephenie meyer wrote a paragraph or so about what happened in that event. It was actually edward imitating carlisle's voice, because rosalie phoned him and told him bella was dead. you can find the passage on stephenie's site.

OKay I LOVE twilight although it is SOOOO mean for Edward to leave BELLA like that. But it is sSOOO sweet for him to kill himself when he thinks BELLA is dead although he should have checked in with Charlie first.
