  • i have the same thing but louder than that the is on them is the rockers like as the engine gets older overtime the rockers start to wear out or the bearings might be warn out!!!

  • On our 2000 X we had a cracked exhaust manifold on the pass. side. More throttle the clicking gets faster. Took me 6 hour to replace. Now a year later the drivers side is cracked. Flaw on Nissan and was recallable up to 7 years of model year.

  • hey my x is making this same noise. did you figure out what was the problem? thanks

  • maybe its just a piece of crap.... unlike mine:)

  • I didnt read anyone elses responses but mine was loud too. Did a knock sensor relocation and it fixed the tick and got way better fuel mileage. I know this video is like 2 years old but I thought I would share.

  • i have an 02 too with 104,546 and i have to chane my time belt soon too because i hear a little click on it and my mechanic said its the timebelt that does that noise but i dont think xterras have chain belts ????

  • @omarantuan They have timing belts, not timing chains. And standard maintenance on them at 105,000 is timing belt and water pump (since the water pump is driven by the timing belt and you might as well replace it when you're in there). I just had my timing belt and water pump replaced at 99,000 and the timing belt was ready to go, and the water pump was leaking. The clicking is your exhaust!

  • Your sound is an exhaust leak. X's are known for warping exhaust manifolds, since Nissan didn't allow enough clearance for expansion and contraction. When ordering a new manifold, make sure you get the newer version with the thicker flange. The key symptom to this leak is hearing the lifters. 9/10 times, it is the passenger side FYI

  • your problem are the valves or the hidraulick lifters

  • hum i got a 02 never heard it a noise like this its kinda hard to really hear it anyway but i changed my timing belt at 107 miles and they said it was about broke

  • Xterra's engines (vg33e) are known for the noisy lifters/rockers, why I dont know. They do not use a Chain, they use a timing BELT which will not make that noise. On the 02 the lifters are hydraulic, and the rockers are non adjustable.

  • i guess you was trying to reply to the guy above me cause i did say belt but i had a noise just like this and it was my timing belt i know yall might not think it will make a noise like this but mine was about broke i seen it and it was finished and fixed the sound plus some other little sounds like that sounded like the lifters not saying that thats his problem just suggesting or giving my opionon better yet

  • The sound is as follows;

Hamster on hamster wheel inside engine needs to be replaced and fed

  • nissan likes to use timing chains in their engines. less maintenance and all that. It might be the timing chain tensioner. Most 240s and sentras have the same sound while they idle.

  • they might like "chains" in some of their engines, but in the XTERRA's that have the VG33E's they liked BELTS.

  • Timing belts don't make noise, ever! And, if the pistons hit the valves the engine is done, it won't run...at all.

  • mine was making a noise! i know it stoped alot of little sounds like that sounded like the lifters to!

  • 125,000kms... so .... 78000miles

  • I have a 2002 Xterra as well, and that sounds like the timing belt. How many miles are on this one? You generally want to have the timing belt changed around 90,000-100,000 miles.

  • its prob your timing belt cause your pistons to hit the valves its a common problem with imports and most newer demostics

but i would ask some other peolpe befor i start doing something about it i could be wronge
