  • Hey, the cars were going past at 150mph, the drivers would have presumed the marshals and safety team would have it taken care of.

Great men like Jackie Stewart were in this race and if they had known what was happening they would have certainly stopped. Cut the drivers some slack.

  • Happy Birthday David. RIP. An absolute inspiration.

  • whats the name of this song please : )

  • @jdmk20aek The song: Jimmy Eat World - Hear You Me

  • this guy's the real winner

  • hero...

  • The other drivers thought David was the driver of the overturned car.

  • 1:29

The moment when he realizes he can no longer save him :'(

  • La cancion se llama hear your me de jimmy eat worl

  • gostei muito amigos sao pra essas coisas ,apena e que ele nao conseguiu :(

  • Alguem pode me dizer o nome dessa musica e quem canta? achei linda demais

  • Even tho he coulnt save him, he tryed.. And thats what really makes him a hero. How impossible it even seems you shall always try..

  • thanks for reposting the origjnal after the record companies banned it. they obviously never had best friends. fuck them.

  • I keep watching this in the vain hope that maybe this time he'll manage to put the fire out.

  • David Purley - You are a great guy...a human

  • Вокруг блять 3 человека и не смогли машину перевернуть! Даже не всю а кусок... Уебаны в аду вам гореть!

  • DAVID PURLEY SE VE Q FUE UN VERDADERO AMIGO DE LA HUMANIDAD...

  • It makes me cry.

  • why the fuck is the race still carrying on??

  • very moving

  • Damn what a sadly moment! R.I.P...

  • He wasn't just a sportsman: he was a hero.

  • this video makes me speechless everytime i see it.... David Purley you were a true sportsman...

  • this song is appropriate, makes it real sad. pay tribute, you morons.

  • How can they just drive past? You can win all the races you like but Purley is the real hero and anyone who helps another always will be.

  • David Purley was a MAN !!!! He die in 1985. RIP mr. PURLEY!

  • There is so many people and track workers close to crashed car ! I think if they were move fast and quickly to turn the car Roger Williamson may be live. And I dont know maybe his neck broken while was going reverse. But the true is some people was very far from Humanity and David Purley was a Hero at here.Respect and R.I.P them !

  • @bodyci34 have you tried touching 2500 degrees with your bare hands and non flame retardant overalls? It not the track officials fault. Its that they werent prepared with the proper clothes to be able to flip him over without severely injuring themselves

  • @mrtitsmigee Then why was Purley able to place his hands on there? He didn't have any special clothing on either, but he still endured a bit of pain to try and save somebody's life. They should have done the same, it's their job, it wasn't Purley's, but he took matters into his own hands as a good guy and helped even when no-one else was willing to do so.

  • @thereallegend I think driver's suits were already somewhat fire-proof.

The officials deserve a painful death for this...

  • David is an example to follow... :')

  • The marshalls couldn't do anything without fireproofs, they would have burnt too.

Like a lot of people, I watched the Killer Years documentary and this was a relatively normal thing in Formula 1 at the time.

May Rodger Williamson Rest in Peace. At least he's able to look at the safety in F1 today knowing his death wasn't in vain.

  • @99dndd yea man death was sadly a regular thing in formula 1 back then. So many good drivers died in those days. it sucks.

  • In memory of Roger Williamson.

  • F1 shouldve been sued out the ass and the safety crews shoudve been put to death for their unwillingness to help

  • cant imagine how bad it wouldve been to be in davids situation, what a hero, my hat goes off to you sir

  • id love to shake davids hand, god how can other people just watch this happen without helping, its heartbreaking

  • how can he not be a hero. he had to hear his mate scream while burning to death. sick fuckers not stopping the race. bad news that this guy had to burn live on t.v for things to change.

  • I remembered the incident from my childhood, but am ashamed to say that I couldn't remember either drivers' name. Then I saw the documentary on the BBC on Monday. I don't know what shocked me more, the ineptitude & cowardice of the officials, or the other drivers continuing to race. As one of the documentary contributors said, no-one came out of that day with any credit except David Purley. A very brave, quick thinking and compassionate man. The despair in his body language says it all.

  • just watched grand prix the killing years what a brave guy he was may he rest in peace its hard to beleive all the rest of the drivers just drove on as if nothing happened thank god we dont see that in todays raceing

  • Disturbing to watch officials standing there. Im angry at that too, David Purley what a guy !

  • yea, the twats never done a thing they shud be held on manslaughter charges!

  • does anyone notice that the first 2 officials run over then do exactly fuck all 2 help?

  • rip

  • the name of this song is Jimmy Eat World - Hear You Me (Virgin Mobile FreeFest 2010) 17JIMPY07

  • name of the song!!?

  • Huge respect for David Purley. And to those calling for the sport to be banned: Everyone who takes part in motorsport knows the risks and chooses to take part because it's something that they love to do. Just as you can choose to watch, or not to watch. Why should we take away the right for people to do something that puts their own life at risk? As mentioned, F1 is much safer these days and I recommend that anyone who has a problem with the safety of it, stays away from motorcycle racing

  • Also my respect for David Purley

  • whoever added in this music, fuck you. i wouldn't have cried if it weren't playing.

  • @sd3f4gh5jk67 Grow up -.-

  • @Destroyed666Doom No need to be a dick, i just dont like crying, dick nose.

  • @sd3f4gh5jk67 Lmao, im the one who's being a dick? You're the one sayin "fuck you" for no reason at all, like if crying were a bad thing, only shows you have emotions.

  • @Destroyed666Doom coming from someone name destroyed666doom? What are you an angry teenager?

  • @sd3f4gh5jk67 Lol so now you're trying to make me the bad guy here?.. Oh well, i guess that's how internet dumbasses are, anyway, if you didnt wanted to cry, Simple, you know that big red X on the top right corner of the page? It's used to exit the page, just in case you didn't know. So you only had to click there.

  • @Destroyed666Doom Once again ill say it, your name is destroyed666doom, this argument is obviously a result from a vague state in teenager adolescence, causing you to lash out in a completely unnecessary way. You're not a bad guy, we've all been through the changes puberty bring and we understand i assure you.

  • @sd3f4gh5jk67 Lol? Once again you're trying to make me the bad guy here, and "Lash out in a completly unecessary way? Well i'm sorry, i tought you were the one who started calling me a "Dicknose"? You're Pathetic, and i won't talk anymore with you in respect for the ones in the video. Have a good day and change your attitude.

  • @Destroyed666Doom Look i got dumped two days ago, didn't shed a tear. Come on to youtube and this shit plays out before my eyes, than i cry. I really hate myself here, and you're just kind of helping

  • @sd3f4gh5jk67 Well then explain things before you call others dicknose and whatever more, feel sorry for you, hope things turn out well for you, but you also can't simply come here and have that attitude, Life has is up and down's, and if you get it out by calling other people names just so you can take your frustation out, if she didnt wanted you, it was cuz you were to awesome for her, Life goes on :) Take care and life continues ^-^

  • @Destroyed666Doom Thanks my main man, she didn't trust me to remain faithful in college, and neither did i. I think im going to be okay. And ill put a stop on the trolling

  • @sd3f4gh5jk67 Happens alot these days, but yeah, you're goin to be okay, been through the same, but im okay now, and good because trolling leads to nowhere :) Take care and hope everything turns out okay for you ^^

  • @Destroyed666Doom @sd3f4gh5jk67

also, you two are ruining this video!

  • @17JIMPY07 You should congrats us for actually reaching to a happy ending on this discussion, not like most of the others fights over youtube. Take care

  • @Destroyed666Doom this is true i guess-

keep it to private messages in the future though! :)

  • @17JIMPY07 sure

  • @sd3f4gh5jk67 i totally agree, that song sucks.

  • in my eyes the attempt to save williamsons life makes David Purley one of the formula 1 heroes besides Stuck and the other guys who rescued Lauda

  • look, i think people need to lay off the people around purley, they didnt have protective gear, and its easy to say that you would try and push a burning car over but in reality i doubt many of us could, burns of that nature will probably never heal, also they might not have been able to flip the car even between them all.

  • Just because you don't have protective gear, that doesn't give you the right to be an asshole and watch someone die. Getting burned and saving a life or being a baby and letting someone die? Very hard decision, the assholes that stood there and watched need to have the crap kicked out of em and worse but I won't say.

  • This makes me cry for real.

  • There are not only competition in the race, but also have these like friendship and braveness.

  • I cried at this..

  • Why did they just sit there

  • @Ricey167

they had no protective gear back then and the car was on fire so they couldnt go near it.

  • @bcoolnotfool Even still though I would do anything to try and help, burns will heal, death does not.

  • @Ricey167 No protective equipments, poor training and incapacity of response in crisis situation. Yep.

  • @mrbillyjack69 You're just a stupid american who doesn't know anything from outside usa!

  • a hero if i ever saw one.

  • David Purley is the only one that DIDN'T fail Roger that day. R.I.P. to both of them. Thank you David for STILL being an example of bravery, courage, and compassion!

  • david purley was the only human there at that moment.

  • Why would someone dislike this video?

Its such a sad yet motivational video, the man is a hero.

  • @KlimaVids The 7 people who dislike support the fucking marshals

  • Those marshals look hapless

  • a true hero in my book, imagine the stress during and after for david, a true hero, r.i.p roger, all but 'one' fellow man let you down.

  • great!!!hero!!!

  • RESPECT voor PURLEY!!!

  • Why is f1 still legal?

  • @MrRealist18 This no longer happens, no one has died in Formula One since Ayrton Senna in 1994. 17 years ago. And it was a freak accident, it wasn't even the impact that killed him, rather a piece of suspension arm flying into his helmet and the tire hitting his head. Safety after Senna's death has taking huge leaps. Now people walk away unharmed from the most horrific crashes due to how safe the cars are now.

  • @MrRealist18 True what that other dude said, and also there are deaths in all race sports, and even in other kind of sports, so if you want to take F1 out, you'll have to take the rest

  • I'm crying - very brave man with a golden heart

  • thats somethiung beautiful to see, the guy retired from the race just to save his friend. seems that people don't care about saving others anymore.

  • I knew about the crash and how Purley tried to help from reading stories and Internet pictures, but this is the first time I've seen the video. It's really hard to watch actually, you can really see how distraught he is when he can't save his friend. Roger Williamson was a big talent, his life wasted by the actions of others. Purley deserved his medal.

  • a sad day

  • @WoOSprintCars Too bad none of the other drivers stopped, had some other drivers helped Purley try to rescue his friend, Williamson might have lived. You saying that racers would help even if it's their worst rival is a load of crap, or someone other than his friend might have helped him.

  • @WoOSprintCars Modest, aren't you.

  • @gapechorin2112 THANK YOU!!

  • David Purley is a hero!!!!

  • I really hope that Roger Williamson didnt died in terrible agony...I was shocked when i was seeing this tragic pictures, when only ONE REALLY WANTS TO SAVE his friend, when all other where just looking and staying near when someone was helping and crying for help...When someone needs help!He was dieng with think that SOMEONE will come and save him...Respect for David Purley and R.I.P Roger Williamson!

  • Wow, truly tragic. He really tried to fucking save his life and sadly failed because those other people failed to help him out... wow you can just see it in David's gestures after that. this really bummed me the hell out... I'd hate to see and hear a friend die in front of me.

  • DAVID PURLEY EST GRANDE

    LOVE DE ACTION THE DAVID

  • Please tell me what song this is, so AMAZING and SAD

  • @5ImPulse Hear You Me by Jimmy Eat World

  • versão em portugues, watch?v=9YQhZJH0aSw

  • This is the saddest motherfucking thing I've ever seen. True friendship.

  • apparently the other guys bitch that the flames were to hot and they could get sever burns. lets see sever burns or trying to save someones life? hmmm that really isn't a hard choice for me; you do what you can to save the drive. Those guys should be slap!

  • This is why Formula 1 has and ALWAYS will be the greatest sport on earth. There are no words to describe David Purley's bravery.

  • We could see a real life hero!

He is my life hero forever!

  • DAVID PURLEY = HERO

  • @yerty2000

you don't really become a hero if you don't save the guy - just saying. he's brave but he failed notheless

  • @skaloon pity this is your definition of a hero.

  • @skaloon At least he tried! Look at the others... Maybe he is not a hero, but he did what a human being should do!

  • @kexinkeren

that's what i'm saying the guy is brave as hell, but he didn't saved him so not a hero.

  • @skaloon seriously delusional and really look up the definition of hero it means A person, typically a man, who is admired for courage or noble qualities. Not someone who saves lifes. This man was a hero!!! GIRUY

  • @skaloon The definition for me depends on soemone's heart and courage. That makes Purley a hero in my books, and I'm uninterested in anyone else's opinion.

  • @yerty2000 you know mate i only seen this last week, cant seem to get it out of my mind, every day i come home i seem to have to watch it for some reason,iv seen some bad f1 accidents but this is one of the worst, may they both rest in peace

  • what a horrific accident for roger williamson & the very brave man david purley doing unselfishly all in his power to save his collegue driver , but sadly not suceed in that :(

shame on those coward officials & other drivers ignoring to help out. RIP you both.

  • @thenicedudejay i wish you could try and touch a flaming chasis car with you're bare hands or even get close to those flames with normal clothes, Purley was brave trying to save Williamson, but he was protected by the antiflame suit... people should think about the facts, before calling cowards to others... plus in those days marshalls were poorly equiped

  • @IKurtC The sad fact remains the marshalls did nothing, its rare someone will do nothing when you hear a man dying but those marshalls did. David even had to go and get the bloody fire extinguisher. Its not the marshalls couldn't do anything, its that they didn't want to do anything. Watch them, they don't care, instead of getting more help or trying to stop the race to get other drivers to help they stood by and let Roger die. Purley is a national hero and is sadly missed. RIP David and Roger

  • Makes me proud to be British.

  • @BeBritishBProud me too

  • The most awful part of this whole thing is that the just threw a blanket over his car and allowed the race to continue. Absolutely disgusting. RIP Roger and David.

  • Although there was obviously great danger in crossing the track, Purley has to cross it multiple times just to grab the extinguisher from the hands of the official who initially refuses to cross. Despite the heat the officials and other people nearby could potentially have wrapped jackets around their hands. Purley clearly pleads with them to help him right the car, and he only stays away once pushed to the other side of the track because Williamson's death screams had abated.

  • To be fair, the passing drivers only ever saw a glipse of the chaos, and they probably figured the car on the left was involved and the driver was over the fence, and that the driver of the burning car had *just* gotten out...none of them knew how long the man in the drivers' suit was there. The only way this could have turned out different is if an official at the scene had put up a red flag in order to make the other drivers stop and then they could be told someone was still in the car.

  • It's a horrific way to die, however the silver lining of this accident was that it shamed Formula 1 massively, forcing them to focus on safety and protecting the drivers. David Purley was a hero and showed great humanity, and sadly it wasn't enough. The marshalls, yes no fireproofs, but if they'd all rushed in they could've turned it before the heat got too much, saving Williamson. The other drivers deserve to be spat on for continuing, they know what its like & were all protesting about safety!

  • My god, watching this makes me GLAD that formula one is so boring now.

  • the track officals could do little. They weren't wearing fireproofs, they had no gloves. They weren't properly equipped. At that point the only people that could have helped, were the other drivers.

  • @pcjwss why didn't they stop then!? this sort of thing would be looked down on now.

  • Comment removed

  • the horror of seeing this and being unable to help must have been heartbreaking for david. The track officials could and should have done a LOT more here.

  • david purley trying to do the human thing... unfortunately some of us are just not human :(

  • david purley= hero.

  • So tragic. this is a real eye opener for the saftey of 70s formula 1.

  • 6 people is a ghost

  • 2:24 what a picture....

    R.I.P

  • 6 heartless dislikes

  • I could hear every word he's saying by watching this :(

  • 1:22 the guy in the middle. VERY unprofessional... ok, they dont have a second fire extinguisher, but instead of trying to put the fire out by KICKING SAND ONTO IT he could run and get another damn fire extinguisher goddamn it!!!

  • david purley shows, braveness is not the absence of fear, it is the act to do something allthough you have fear!

  • 8 people do now deserve life

  • Negative circumstances make real men show why they differ from others. Dear David, your example inspires me to try do be a better person every day.

  • HELLO ZAFIR001, WHAT IS NAME OF SONG?? THAN´KS FOR VIDEO.

  • @AficionalDeporte Jimmy eat world - here you me

  • respect for David Purley

  • he truely tried to save him and no one else would help i wish i were there i would done anything i could to help save him burning or not

  • david purly tryed so hard to save that mans life and i just for the life of dont understand why no one else would help him thats even more sad than the fatal crash its self

  • I don't believe Purley's help

  • Williamson had died of asphyxiation. died of asphyxiation chocked to death asphyxiation is latin

  • That must have been really hard for David Purley being told to leave and walk away from his friend who was burning to death.

  • oh man...

  • thumbs up if you cried

  • RIP Roger, and RIP David. A true hero.

  • David Purley is a true Hero in my eye's!

  • @jyri777 Well said fella, and they have a concience. Sadly thats something some people lack.
