  • well done, great guitar!

  • I'm watching again!! ;P

  • @BillieFM Bored yet?? LOL! I AM!

  • @rubyrendrag Nope! :)

  • Strong guitar work... and a very nice cover indeed. Thanks.

  • I really like your version. I've been watching them all this morning.

I especially like how you've colored the chords - the moving down in timbre while moving toward the body of the guitar, then how you close up the tone on the bridge with barre chords then open it back up later.

    Good voice too, sounds like

    (in a very good way)

    Chrissie Hynde.

  • I'm watching again! LOL

  • You're amazing. I hope you won!

  • I like your rhythm guitar on this- it's strong and punchy- like Townshend or Holly.

  • wow you are awesome check my videos and see if im any good

  • Ruby-

    Great song writing chops!

  • Oops! I am on the wrong video

  • yeah.. this one's not mine!

  • Maybe not, but you sure sing it like it is. I love how you own this tune. Your voice is so strong and great and tuneful. I love hearing it.

  • Your awsome!! love your version of this amazing song. Please post some kind of description how to play this, I would love to play the song this way. love it! please please!

  • Great version! Reminds me of the Pretenders. I hope AM got a chance to see it.

  • I'm watching it again! No, YOU ROCK!

  • Thanks chadwickryan... or is it Ryan Chadwick?

  • Heya, ummm. I made up what I played from trying to play the bass and keyboard parts. I figure since a few people are asking for chords I'll try to do a video on how I played it especially since I'm not really sure what the chords are.

I'll try to have something up in a few weeks?

    Thanks for asking!

  • I would have given prize to you, Ruby. Maybe cause you are already a pro - could have worked against you. Drop D regular tuning, right? Or open tuning?

  • Drop d regular tuning. I'm definitely not a pro. Just makin stuff up!

  • My favorite entry, and although I'm glad you are a Runner-Up, I still think you should have won the whole thing. But, you sing better than Aimee does, and she can't have that happen on stage next to her, can she???? LOL

  • Some great guitar playing, you played this very clean and kept it very tight. Some clever variants.

  • Congratulations! This sounds better and better with each listen, you definitely deserve to sing with Aimee...

  • hey ruby, congrats on being a runner-up!!!!

  • ty

    awesome clip!

    uth

  • I'm watching it again!

  • Have you been notified yet? I'm drawn to your entry more than the others. I expect the judges are like me! Best of Luck.

  • Really nice of you to say that! Good luck to you too!

  • Oh yeah? I watch your video at least once a day! :)

  • I saw your new drums!!! AND your video AGAIN... ha!

  • Fucking awesome, I watch this one several times a week.

  • Not as much as I watch yours I bet!

  • Your only competitor is soulfulstrut1, Good Luck!!

  • Soulfulstrut1 rules!

  • I love your voice and attitude! I hope I can come see you when you play in Greensboro next month.

  • Great voice and playing! My favorite entry so far.

And hey, Mr. Stinson... here's another way of looking at this. This so-designated "competition" doesn't seem to be inspiring a lot a lot of mudslinging... well.. other than from you, maybe. Rather, it's been a great way for a lot of aspiring musicians to get some exposure in a partnership (of sorts) with a well-known singer songwriter.

In other words: We're all here to have fun. And you're spitting right in our collective face.

  • Sorry you see it that way. That's not how I see it. Maybe if you had a little more confidence in your abilities, like Ruby, you wouldn't give a damn what I think or say. Or maybe you just want to look tough in front of your peers by putting in your two cents against little old me. It's easy to gang up on the guy who is saying unpopular things.

  • Yeah, "tough" is definitely what I was trying to project. Nothing makes me feel more like a big, strong man than telling someone on YouTube that they're being childish and petty.

  • Thanks for proving my point. If it is not your intention to be defensive and antagonistic then you would have said nothing at all. The only way to win is to quit playing the game tough guy (or to sing something else because your voice is so terrible I think you could use it as a weapon -- think psychological weapon like the ATF used against the Branch Davidians in Waco).

  • Oh, man. That made my night. Thanks. Kicking it old school early nineties references there. I'll probably use it in my eventual album ads. I dunno though, those kids today might not remember Waco...

  • It was kind of amusing to read your agressively negative "critique" of Ruby's video. It started with a one word onomatopeia, progressed to "I don't like it because it's country", took a left turn at "all art belongs in a museum" and then went right on to complaints about Youtube's comment policies and how they judge the popularity of a video. It's almost as if you were trying to obscure the original issue.

  • You are unaware of the several emails Ruby and I were exchanging in private. That's the reason for what you observe.

  • I really don't care what you think or say, aside from the effect it has on other aspiring musicians... So hey, all you aspiring musicians--people who criticize you without being the least bit constructive aren't worth listening to, and 99% of the time don't know what they're talking about anyway.

  • Thanks for your kind words Ruby - the feeling's mutual! You look and sound the part (and remind me of another of my fave gals Kim Deal) Well done! Ross x

  • Oh man! Kim Deal. I LOVE her. Thanks!

  • My favorite performance besides Aimee's... great job!

  • My new fave in this. Really like the way you've worked out the riff. Your guitar playing is a pleasure to hear and watch. Add to that your great voice and well what else can I say you got it all working. Excellent!

  • I agree with Aimee... :)

Great job and best of luck...I am sure you are in the running to win it.

  • Really great, I think that Stephen dude is just jealous or something, Who argues on fucking youtube?

Anyway, good luck! I played tambourine on stage with Aimee a few summers ago and it was AWESOME! Hope you get to!

  • I think Stephen is venting. He's got a lot to say.

Thanks for the comment! This has been quite the experience.

  • Great job! ;)

  • Ruby, I think your entry is amazing. I just emailed Stephen to ask him to remove his comments, which are not at ALL in the spirit of this contest.

    Good luck!!

  • Must be my Nawlin's accent! Thanks dgard!

  • Nice job! If you're ever in the LA area, you should check out the funky and affordable Il Teatro in Pasadena (where I got my jacket in that video you mentioned). Good luck!

  • Thanks dadasarah! Good luck to you too! Great voice!

  • I see we "hear" different things when we listen to Ruby.

I hear a distinctive twang and emphasis at the end of every phrase, accompanied by a crescendo very much like the stereotypical country singer. That kind of style doesn't complement the original song. So that = Yuucchh...

    ...and awful lot of LEEE-way...

    ...specialist in rrEEETAIL...

    ...take the bLAAACKmail...

    ...YOOUUR Talk...

    ...just SHOOOW it...

  • Not a bad suggestion. I'll think about it. I know I need a little help in the tact department. However, everything you say to me is dripping with sarcasm and disdain, so I hardly think you're one to talk.

  • Are we having some weird astrological clash via you tube messaging? C'mon Stevo let's sweep this crap under the carpet. Hand shake?

  • Like driving a car on the freeway. It's easy to start behaving in a manner that is disrespectful of other people.

So yeah, I'm guilty of that. Interesting jumping off point for considering what makes people tick. Why is it so easy for us to disregard each other?

Look at it this way, without you making this video none of this discussion would be possible. It's inspiring. Which is why you shouldn't take things so personally. Easy to say, hard to do. Good luck.

  • SS! I'm really not taking anything personally. I write and play songs for me. Sometimes people like it sometimes they don't and we're all entitled to our opinions. Problem is... text on a screen has no tone of voice. I'm having fun over here in NOLA and making friends all over the world. Maybe we'll meet one day, have a drink and a laugh.

  • Not taking it personally? Calling me an asshole seemed pretty personal to me, but maybe you call everybody "childish asshole", *shrug.

  • Another entry told me about one of your comments, which was deleted. It was taken personally for someone else you managed to hurt. Not me. Young singer/songwriters need to be encouraged not discouraged. Again, I say to you art is an offering of a personal experience from one human to another. We need as much of that as we can get and you're not helping.

  • And I say to you, that contests are not places that encourage art. For art to be encouraged it belongs in a museum for the individual to experience it one-on-one. A contest immediately implies there will be judgment. And those who enter their art in a contest need to be prepared to be judged. And there's a good chance that the artist will be judged with some degree of criticism. Nature of the beast. Life ain't fair. That sort of thing.

  • So, I never meant to imply that I was interested in helping encourage the expression of art, because a contest is no place for that. If we want to make encouraging free expression between people our goal, then we should not have contests like this one.

  • There would be a call for submissions and then a compilation of the work would be presented somewhere for people to experience - like a museum. Except it would be a museum for musical expression. That sounds pretty cool right? I don't think I know of such a place.

  • Music "industry" has usually been anti-expression. A&R guys, Producers, executives, labels, fans, sales, etc are all very anti-expression. The internet has been a fascinating way of changing that. GarageBand, Indie labels, home studio technology, CD-burners, the .mp3, websites, digital music players.

So my argument is that the flaw is in the premise of: CONTEST

  • It also dawns on me that YouTube keeps track of stats on "most discussed" and that my continuing to "blah, blah, blah" on your video might actually help you. Which is fine with me, but I hope that its not your intent as an ulterior motive.

number of characters over the limit: 1120 -- I hate YouTube's character limits.

  • OMG. I'm going to reply one more time. Incredible.

It just dawned on me that YouTube has character limits because they want to encourage VIDEO responses. Duh!

Well, I'm not there yet. I make videos, but they very rarely feature me. I'm too chicken. I KNOW I wouldn't be able to take the criticism - I was often bullied in grade school and public humiliation isn't my bag baby. We'll see. Maybe I'm building up the courage to do it.

  • Yuucchh...

  • Niiiice! Thanks! I'll be in your neck of the woods sometime in September. You should come heckle me!

  • It's your voice. It sounds too stereotypical country to me and that strikes me as unimaginative. Also, the camera angles and the effects just seem gimmicky. So I thought Yuucchh... summed that up pretty nicely. Maybe you'll prefer the feedback instead. Another guy I criticized thanked me for the feedback. If it makes you feel better, these aren't opinions. They're my critical thoughts which are come from an extensive training in music and art.

  • And I'm supposed to thank you for yuucchh? Maybe you should consider a little training in how to properly critique the art and music you're so knowledgeable about.

  • Thank you for the comment. I saw your video early on and I love your voice and guitar playing. This is by far one of my faves! :)

  • That was great, the best so far, and I think I've seen most of them. Besides your voice, which was beautiful, I loved your guitar playing . Definitely the best job with a guitar part.

  • Thanks so much for the nice comment!

  • Hi Ruby,

I just spent about an hour figuring out your guitar part, which is a rarity for me - I can usually tell what people are doing pretty instantly. I love your work and look forward to more videos, particularly of your originals.

  • Thanks again drothberg3! I'd like to hear more from you as well. Never did the video thing before so I think I'll give it another try with an original thanks to your suggestion!

  • Hi Ruby,

I love your version too, would be nice to sing together but there's this big ocean in between...you've got a good chance to win I think.

  • Crossing the ocean sounds like fun! So, I say, why not? Thanks for your comment and good luck!

  • Your voice has a really beautiful smoky quality--I think it would pair up nicely with Aimee's voice. I hope you win!

  • That was really great!

  • That was just perfect all around! The swirling crane shot, the music mix, and the vocals! Enjoy singing with Aimee!!

  • This is such a beautiful version! A++

  • Thanks nudles!

  • So darn cool. What a low, deep, cool voice. Good luck!

  • VERY NICE! You sing & play beautifully.

  • Hey! Thanks! I'm having a ball with these videos too.

  • Hey you rockin ass girl:)Love the video you sexy little thing:)

  • Just saw this...so gorgeous...I would love to hear you sing with Aimee, ahh I would just love to hear you sing...so many gifted people, I truly love it. Oh and lessons?? Too funny, I just received a beautiful one, thank you!

  • You're so nice but I still want lessons!

  • Wow! excellent, just excellent! I love Aimee and I think you've got an incredible chance at winning this! Good luck!

  • wow. Really, really nice. I think you're gonna be singing with Aimee....sigh....great job!

  • I wish!!

  • Okay, you are really talented! That was amazing, and I loved the creepy ice cream truck music at the beginning. You have a nice, smokey voice, and are a great guitarist too.

  • Thanks BillieFM! My first attempt at a video but it was a chance to sing with Aimee!

  • That was awesome!
