I really like your version. I've been watching them all this morning.
I especially like how you've colored the chords - the moving down in timbre while moving toward the body of the guitar, then how you close up the tone on the bridge with barre chords then open it back up later.
Your awsome!! love your version of this amazing song. Please post some kind of description how to play this, I would love to play the song this way. love it! please please!
Heya, ummm. I made up what I played from trying to play the bass and keyboard parts. I figure since a few people are asking for chords I'll try to do a video on how I played it especially since I'm not really sure what the chords are.
I would have given prize to you, Ruby. Maybe cause you are already a pro - could have worked against you. Drop D regular tuning, right? Or open tuning?
My favorite entry, and although I'm glad you are a Runner-Up, I still think you should have won the whole thing. But, you sing better than Aimee does, and she can't have that happen on stage next to her, can she???? LOL

Great voice and playing! My favorite entry so far.
And hey, Mr. Stinson... here's another way of looking at this. This so-designated "competition" doesn't seem to be inspiring a lot a lot of mudslinging... well.. other than from you, maybe. Rather, it's been a great way for a lot of aspiring musicians to get some exposure in a partnership (of sorts) with a well-known singer songwriter.
In other words: We're all here to have fun. And you're spitting right in our collective face.
Sorry you see it that way. That's not how I see it. Maybe if you had a little more confidence in your abilities, like Ruby, you wouldn't give a damn what I think or say. Or maybe you just want to look tough in front of your peers by putting in your two cents against little old me. It's easy to gang up on the guy who is saying unpopular things.
Yeah, "tough" is definitely what I was trying to project. Nothing makes me feel more like a big, strong man than telling someone on YouTube that they're being childish and petty.
Thanks for proving my point. If it is not your intention to be defensive and antagonistic then you would have said nothing at all. The only way to win is to quit playing the game tough guy (or to sing something else because your voice is so terrible I think you could use it as a weapon -- think psychological weapon like the ATF used against the Branch Davidians in Waco).
Oh, man. That made my night. Thanks. Kicking it old school early nineties references there. I'll probably use it in my eventual album ads. I dunno though, those kids today might not remember Waco...
It was kind of amusing to read your agressively negative "critique" of Ruby's video. It started with a one word onomatopeia, progressed to "I don't like it because it's country", took a left turn at "all art belongs in a museum" and then went right on to complaints about Youtube's comment policies and how they judge the popularity of a video. It's almost as if you were trying to obscure the original issue.
I really don't care what you think or say, aside from the effect it has on other aspiring musicians... So hey, all you aspiring musicians--people who criticize you without being the least bit constructive aren't worth listening to, and 99% of the time don't know what they're talking about anyway.
Thanks for your kind words Ruby - the feeling's mutual! You look and sound the part (and remind me of another of my fave gals Kim Deal) Well done! Ross x
My new fave in this. Really like the way you've worked out the riff. Your guitar playing is a pleasure to hear and watch. Add to that your great voice and well what else can I say you got it all working. Excellent!
Nice job! If you're ever in the LA area, you should check out the funky and affordable Il Teatro in Pasadena (where I got my jacket in that video you mentioned). Good luck!
I see we "hear" different things when we listen to Ruby.
I hear a distinctive twang and emphasis at the end of every phrase, accompanied by a crescendo very much like the stereotypical country singer. That kind of style doesn't complement the original song. So that = Yuucchh...
Not a bad suggestion. I'll think about it. I know I need a little help in the tact department. However, everything you say to me is dripping with sarcasm and disdain, so I hardly think you're one to talk.
Like driving a car on the freeway. It's easy to start behaving in a manner that is disrespectful of other people.
So yeah, I'm guilty of that. Interesting jumping off point for considering what makes people tick. Why is it so easy for us to disregard each other?
Look at it this way, without you making this video none of this discussion would be possible. It's inspiring. Which is why you shouldn't take things so personally. Easy to say, hard to do. Good luck.
SS! I'm really not taking anything personally. I write and play songs for me. Sometimes people like it sometimes they don't and we're all entitled to our opinions. Problem is... text on a screen has no tone of voice. I'm having fun over here in NOLA and making friends all over the world. Maybe we'll meet one day, have a drink and a laugh.
Another entry told me about one of your comments, which was deleted. It was taken personally for someone else you managed to hurt. Not me. Young singer/songwriters need to be encouraged not discouraged. Again, I say to you art is an offering of a personal experience from one human to another. We need as much of that as we can get and you're not helping.
And I say to you, that contests are not places that encourage art. For art to be encouraged it belongs in a museum for the individual to experience it one-on-one. A contest immediately implies there will be judgment. And those who enter their art in a contest need to be prepared to be judged. And there's a good chance that the artist will be judged with some degree of criticism. Nature of the beast. Life ain't fair. That sort of thing.
So, I never meant to imply that I was interested in helping encourage the expression of art, because a contest is no place for that. If we want to make encouraging free expression between people our goal, then we should not have contests like this one.
There would be a call for submissions and then a compilation of the work would be presented somewhere for people to experience - like a museum. Except it would be a museum for musical expression. That sounds pretty cool right? I don't think I know of such a place.
Music "industry" has usually been anti-expression. A&R guys, Producers, executives, labels, fans, sales, etc are all very anti-expression. The internet has been a fascinating way of changing that. GarageBand, Indie labels, home studio technology, CD-burners, the .mp3, websites, digital music players.
So my argument is that the flaw is in the premise of: CONTEST
It also dawns on me that YouTube keeps track of stats on "most discussed" and that my continuing to "blah, blah, blah" on your video might actually help you. Which is fine with me, but I hope that its not your intent as an ulterior motive.
number of characters over the limit: 1120 -- I hate YouTube's character limits.

It just dawned on me that YouTube has character limits because they want to encourage VIDEO responses. Duh!
Well, I'm not there yet. I make videos, but they very rarely feature me. I'm too chicken. I KNOW I wouldn't be able to take the criticism - I was often bullied in grade school and public humiliation isn't my bag baby. We'll see. Maybe I'm building up the courage to do it.
It's your voice. It sounds too stereotypical country to me and that strikes me as unimaginative. Also, the camera angles and the effects just seem gimmicky. So I thought Yuucchh... summed that up pretty nicely. Maybe you'll prefer the feedback instead. Another guy I criticized thanked me for the feedback. If it makes you feel better, these aren't opinions. They're my critical thoughts which are come from an extensive training in music and art.
And I'm supposed to thank you for yuucchh? Maybe you should consider a little training in how to properly critique the art and music you're so knowledgeable about.
That was great, the best so far, and I think I've seen most of them. Besides your voice, which was beautiful, I loved your guitar playing . Definitely the best job with a guitar part.
I just spent about an hour figuring out your guitar part, which is a rarity for me - I can usually tell what people are doing pretty instantly. I love your work and look forward to more videos, particularly of your originals.
