On the positive side the F40 won't likely be extinct. There will still be a few around. Problem for Amtrak (and for transit agencies) is that government funding guidelines often force them to get rid of obsolete equipment, although they often have the option of designating a few pieces (locos, cars, buses) for historical or public exhibit events. From a bean counter's point of view, it's not practical.

@dkslfjgh You haven't seen the photos of what happened to most of the Amtrak ones, They were torn up into 3foot by 3foot sections and dumped in a pile at Beach Grove. That is why The F40PH Preservation Society was formed to help preserve these locomotives.

Actually the F40's basic carbody design is a modification of the 1973 EMD SDP40F. I'm amazed at all the hoopla, but the F40 is basically a modified GP40-2 with a carbody. The original cowl nose was simplified to cut costs, though there were a few non-Amtrak F40s that had the FP45 styled nose. I first saw the F40 in 1981. Took a long time for them to grow on me as I preferred the graceful lines of the SDP40f and P30CH. Nice to know that a few F40s will be preserved. .

MBTA has 18 straight F40PHs. The others are F40PH-2Cs built by EMD. The -2C locos are longer to accomodate another engine to provide power to the coaches so it uses less fuel than running it off the main engine.

F40PHM-2Cs were "knockoffs" that MBTA ordered because EMD was busy making freight units at the time.

also, MBTA engine #1006 got a "new" (rebuilt) engine and got repainted so it will be in service long after the other ones.
