I have been listening to this album regularly since the summer I was nine (1965, so almost forty-seven years now) and I never get tired of it. In fact it sparked a life-long interest in jazz, which has included college courses in the history of jazz and these days the extensive set of jazz artists on my Last.fm jazz tag: last.fm/user/PragueBob/library/tags?tag=jazz&view=cloud
Norm Nite classified this song as a Bossanova, but it is really a Somba as you state. Thanks so much for posting, I've tried to find it and the name for several years.
Always feels like summer's arrived when you hear this tune. Getz was truly a great interpreter of bossa nova and one of the main reasons I discovered Brasil's rich musical heritage.
to saxylarry26: it's just you. Getz was introduced to Brazilian music by Byrd and loved his playing...solo and supporting...otherwise he wouldn't have played and recorded with him so often. But I believe there's also interviews with him commenting on Byrd; haven't read those in years, though.
@saxylarry26 Exactly what I was just about to say! That was a truly horrible mess. The feel is good but no-one seems to know where they are after the initial head of the song. There's always the possibility that it is the ultimate pun and that it really is out of tune!
I have always loved Stan Getz.... I think Charlie Byrd is often an overlooked treasure. He didn't tour much and didn't have a lot of recordings but i will listen to his guitar work any time. Thanks for posting
It never ceases to amaze me that YouTube brings out the low-brow in all of us. This, the finest in sophisticated upper-class music with the lowest class of human embarrassment chiming in with the ultimate low-class commentary. It simply belies the utter class and sophistication of this tune. Thank GOD in the early '60s such low-brow was the exception, not the rule.
Beside the trailer-park commentary, this is some of the finest music to ever emanate from these United States.
Wow, amazing how you can hear a song and instantly be flooded with memories. My mother would play this record and practice her dance steps during the bossa-nova craze of the early 1960s. My God, what a great old song....I miss music like this and I miss my mom.
Send "Satin Doll" Ringtones to Cell Cigarette holder which wigs me over her shoulder, she digs me. Out cattin' that satin doll. Baby, shall we go out skippin ? Careful, amigo, you're flippin', speaks Latin that satin doll. She's nobody's fool so I'm playing it cool as can be. I'll give it a whirl but I ain't for no girl catching me, swich-e-rooney. Telephone numbers well you know, doing my rhumbas with uno and that'n my satin doll.
I had the pleasure of seeing Stan Getz live in Manchester, UK in the fifties, on the same bill as Ella Fitzgerald which I've always considered a unique privilege. Class acts, the pair of them.
@SoulbassJr I know its JAZZ fool, but you have not seen the size of my girls booty, now THATS big, real big, its not a booty call, its a booty SHOUT. BAMM there it is.

Is it me, or did Charlie Byrd get lost, and humiliate himself for all eternity.
