To resolve the problem with the ring and to seal perfectly the canister put some petroleum jelly all around the ring like you did with the butter.
It'll not harm your fish. I did that with my 405 Fluval 2 years ago now and my cichlids are happy and even had babies. No leak any more and you'll close you canister with just to fingers.
A good thing to do when doing filter maintenance is get some petroleum jelly or some other sort of lube and put if on the main gasket or o-ring. When you got the filter it came wet and lubed up and over time it will dry and crack, leading to leaks. By keeping it moist, it doesn't crack. Sorta like your skin. Hope i helped someone haha
@ilikebigcuteturtles A month or so. I dont have many fish in there now, only 4. So I dont have to change the media that often because there is less waste.
also in my opinion most processed fish foods smell gross :P if you go with the bloodworms your tank water will be devoid of any smells/odors what so ever :)
planning on upgrading from my aquaclear 110 to that exact filter in the next few weeks, ive taken a look at rena, but im still kind of on the edge :) also what are your recommendations for canister filters in general? you seem to be very knowledgeable about your setups :)
i would recommend that you seriously consider ditching the carbon for the freshwater tank, it can remove some dissolved sediment and nutrients that are beneficial to fish, which in my case if i add activated carbon to my oscar tank, withing a few weeks they will begin to shows early signs of hith, also try frozen bloodworms :) they keep the color of the fish really vibrant(im assuming thats why you are feeding cichlid gold)plus they dont stain the water! hows the 404 working out for you, im
Great video. Your tanks look great. i am aslo thinking of starting a salt water.. but to scared..lol.. and another tip for the O-ring. Fluval actually recommends to use petrolium jelly (vaseline).
I have a Fluval 305 and I notice your outflow nozzle really puts out a strong flow with bubbles where mine doesnt do that at all. I wonder if there is something wrong with mine or its just not strong enough.
nice video man well explained well edited... maybe to long intro but liked it over all & plenty of info!!! btw nice tanks to!! p.s. dont use butter cos is animal fat base use olive oil... works a treat for my 2 fluval 205!!!! keep up the good work...
WOW PINk filters! ITs totally the food your using though because I wash mine really well and never have any kind of problems. I have small community fish though: the biggest are some Blue Gourami's, so maybe having larger fish cause more mess? Mine get clean every time I clean them :)
you have an awesome tank! And I LOVE your Saltwater tank! I've never had one, how much harder is it than a freshwater setup?

Very nice tank. I'm still kind of leaning towards Eheim 2071 for 65 gallon tanks. The Fluval 405 looks easier to manage and maintain plus its more affordable.
Hey ZZMann33, I've heard that the fluval pre-filter media doesn't work well as a biological filter. Is this true? I ask because that is what it appears you are using. Have you noticed any change in their color? (i.e. the fluval pre-filter media turning brown) And is there any difference in the performance between fluval pre-filter vs. biomax?
@kfor714 The one time I tryed to clean the filter pads and re-use them, bad idea. Turned the water red from the food I feed them. 2 of the chambers inside the canister hold little white hexos or ceramic pieces that collect the benificial bacteria. I never had any problems really with that canidter filter except maybe getting the top to seal properly. The fish seem to be doing well, some ive had for 10 years ( the two silver dollars). Thanks
I have a problem,i have an aqueon water changer(basically the same thing as a python) and whenever I use my aqueon water changer it makes a pipe under my sink leak water, and this only happens when I'm using the water changer.

@peanutgarys Its your filter just cycling. It could be some salt but usually that will mix and clear up. You'll be fine give it 24 hours or so the cycle through.
I recently watched a setup video that Fluval made for the 05 series. In the video, they talk about checking the o-ring during each service and using Fluval lubrication or petroleum jelly on it to keep it moist. They didn't mention butter.
@davidjende well I say whatever works. I had butter at the time didnt think it would harm the fish and it didnt. the fish are still alive and kickin. Thanks!
all you have to do is have the outlet out of water slightly pointing into the water the current draws water aswell as for the 6tank slightly over crowded and feeding chiclid gold is does colour water if you over feed try chiclid staple hpoe this helps
i am getting a 55 gallon saltwater and i want to make it a reef tank so i was wondering if i can use the basic florescent light thing that it comes with and buy a strong light or do i have to buy like a 400 dollar fluorescent light fixture just for a reef. please help because i wanna stay as cheap as possible
@techboy710 your need the expensive light for a reef tank, because corals and anemones need over 150w lights. Make sure you get a cleaner shrimp to eat the algae, because if not you will have to scrape the algae daily. You can usually have all saltwater fish that you normally wanted in a reef tank, in a FOWLR tank, FOWLR tanks are cheaper, because 50lbs of live rock is only 50 dollars usually, and it doesn't require heavy light maybe 50w which is a lot easier on money and on electricity.
i had exactly the sme problem with my fluval 405 in the sme spot as you and after 2 mins it burst and flooded by bedroom and floodedthe living room down below so i went out and brought a fluval u3 internal filter and so far have no problems
i like the fluval 405... i have a 125 gal with a 2215 and a 2217 eheim filter.. plus 2 330 penguin filters... the water gets clear but i have 11 pirahnas.. they have a new filter out. i think its the xj or something... this filter looks crazy... but i really want a fluval because its better to clean and its not a pain in the ass like the eheim
Butter is good. That was a smart move. lol!! You can also use some petroleum jelly too. That's what i always use just to get em lubricated & and tightly sealed in my Fluval 405.
@jkennedy1007 is that right? And what do you know? I've been doing it this way for years and never had a problem. I guess its where you get your water and what town you live in and its quality of water. i've had mine check at the local aquarium place and they said it was fine to use. i do have conditionar I use so all is fine. thanks for the comment. Z
what chemicals u use to declorinate your water? i see u are using the water from the sink and wanted to know what u put into the water to make it safe for the fish?
Fluval and Hagen recommend using petroleum jelly on the O-ring... I know this is a late recommendation but thought I would throw that out there. Fluval has their setup and installation videos on youtube if that helps.
I had same problems with my fluval 205 after cleaning it and putting it back togther it kinda didnt make a water seal soi went and bought a new 205 filter haha, It's i herd vasaline works better than butter but it's best just buying a new gasket i didnt want to risk coming back with no water in haha =]
Nice tanks! I just bought a brand new fluval 405, and I love that thing! It pumps the water really fast, and the design delivers true filtration. The fluval DVD said to use petroleum jelly to lube the ring. Is that toxic? Check out my fish tank vids :)
i have the same filter was curious how do u get it to blow out bubbles too? great salt water tank too, i would love 1 but dont think i have the know how yet lol
Well you have to start somewhere and fresh water is a good place to start. Salt water takes alot of time and money in the begging. As it grows and becomes as natural as you can get it, it will thrive. The bubbles u see arnt from the filter but from the power head. It adds current and oxygen to the tank.
hey zman i wouldnt use butter but there is an alternative cheap lubricant that i use. vasaline(petroleum jelly) that will keep it lubricated for a long time and its not toxic!
You should only replace 1 filter foam at a time, replacing bothe removes all the bacteria on them. i know the ceramic rings have some but the foam provides as much. Also do you not treat your water before adding to the tank?
First of all the foam filters were turning the water pink. Second, yes I had the water tested and its filtered, Ive had these fish for a long time some for almost 10 years. They are doing great with the water. Thanks..
