Thanks for the videos! helped my understanding of overtones alot!
I have a few questions tho: When overtone singing, how do you pronounce the harmonic's clearer. I feel them as i go from e-o etc but im not sure how to really bring them out =]. thanks again.
@InfernalNPC please try to apply the instructions in the additional information in the description of this video to find the best resonance means the perfect position of all involved muscels to save it in body and brain to improve it more and more with every repeating (best on a daily basis, at least 5 min per day) so you will reach good results in a short time and have a lot of fun with your voice and the harmonics as a musical gift of nature. So enjoy ;-)
@MiroslavGrosser I sure will. Thanks for your encouragement. I've been experimenting my voice for a few months now with skat, beatbox, throatsinging, and overtones along with other things and im extremely grateful for the human instrument! Keep doing what you love ^
@TheSSDrift exactly! it is the same concentration on a single frequency and therefore the sound is similiar between harmonics and whistling, but the difference is: overtone singing works with the vibrations of the vocal chords and whistling without, just through the breath
I found this video 18 months ago and it changed my life. Practicing overtone singing is such a great way to pass time! Thank you SO much for this amazing help. I can get many partials quite easily now, specifically the closest related tones. I have struggled to get others! Any tips?
@BachBeethovenBeatles nice to hear from your experience. I recommend a vocal coaching per skype or per phone. That works very good to take the next level ;-)
Danke Miroslav. I've dreamed of learning this for the past 18 years... Here in Brazil I could´t find a teacher. Now I get to your video and it works out. For a while it is easier in a very tiny room. It is like singing the [ng] sound, isn´t it??
Thank you so very much! May all blessings shower over you.
@lucasdatti a same to you ;-) PS: The ng-technique is another style, here in this video we concentrate on changing the vowels only and in Part 2 you can learn an amplifying technique with the tongue on the top of the mouth (but without ng)
I closed my eyes and listened to this. I noticed that if you observe on a superficial level, you may not notice the subtle changes in tone but as I heard you move from 'oh' to 'eeh' it was like I could hear windchimes behind your voice. So relaxing. Thank you.
I've got two voles, but the little bastards just keep biting me when i take them out of the cage. I can't get to your other parts of the lesson because of this. Is there a specific species of vole I should try using?

I'm afraid to try it..My family may think something is wrong with me :(... I'm not saying something is wrong with you ^_^.. It is very interesting how you sing this way :)) .. One question.. When people in tuva sing this way..are they saying words in their language? or is it only sounds???Thanks
@theskiizcrying well you shouldnt worry a bout what your family would think, as you practice theses the vibrations in your overall reality increase there for synchronicisticlly tieing in a reality where your family is amazed by what you do and respect your decision.
Thank you Miroslav for this video, I am practising along with it, and heard 4 melody tones in your ee to oo....now I look forward to hearing that, or just the overtones in my own voice. Sunshine
@mrchoon2010 no, this is not necessary in the here shown basic technique, but later is ist possible to amplify the overtones, just try different ways and find your best
@slamboyj1 NO, it is not necessary to pay attention to the tongue in this basic technique. Later (if you listen the changings of the harmonics) you can try to sing the same technique AND to amplify the overtones through putting the tongue on the top of your mouth (or google for bird technique overtone singing).
It sounds like you are in an echoey room when you do this, I am not... If I was in a more echoey room would that help me hear more of my overtones? Thanks!
I really appreciate you making this video, it helped a lot. I've got the form down for the most part I believe, but I'm having a bit of trouble amplifying the ringing sound. Any suggestions?
very pro ... when writing harmonies many times I have to reshape the sound of notes using similar vocalzing techniques to get my harmonies to resonate together into the sound I want ... your techniques are invaluable for singing, writing, recording. practicing the techniques can also help with maintaining pitch and key. glad I found your channel - I sub'd.
@jgross547 not so much in this vowel based technique (more in others). But fact is, that the harmonics are filtered through the unconscious part of the lower tongue, but not by direct intent. Just focus on the sound itself through active listening and chossing, which overtone you like to amplify. The rest is (in this fundamental technique) the job of your wise body.

were you by any chance at aliso beach playing the didgeridoo and singing overtones with 2 of your friends with drums? i saw somone who looks very similar to you that was singing overtones really well. this was about a month ago
I was wondering how you go about generating the whistling sound like the Tuvans do when they sing in Overtones. I've heard it was something to do with using the tongue to kinda divide the mouth in 2 halves?
@JakeT3056 you are talking about a technique to amplify the overtones, which are filtered with the technique I have explained in this video. To combine both - the filter and the amplifyer - please watch my video (in german only) with the title: "Obertongesangs-Technik für lautere Obertöne"
@cassebassefras The position of my throat is normal like during ordinary singing or speaking and the area is completely relaxed. There is no special tension or position of the throat itself.
@sk8aboy19 1. increase the loudness of your fundamental note through relaxing in the lower body 2. focus on listening 3. reduce the speed of changing the vowels 4. stop the flow of time like in meditation to hold a single overtone This is the time for the body to optimize this special overtone for you 5. try to sing without any expectations 6. medtate before singing or practice yoga (also in your mind) 7. make a longer warmup before singing 8. be happy with enjoying the sound 9. repeat ;-) M.G.
What inspires you to speak in English? My family is of German origins but we speak English naturally (living in central America). One of my plans for the future of my life, besides computer practices, is to focus on manipulation of my voice for voice acting.
How do you make your overtones so loud? I can hear mine, but the sound is overpowered by my normal voice, but yours sound practically as loud as your primary tone.
@ibcnunabit it is a question of training, focusing, listening and relaxing. Let your body find the perfect muscles position to amplify your overtones through focusing your attention on one single frequency you like to listen to, then stop the flow of time and relax into the sound itself. Your body will serve you to reach the best result.. Enjoy and have fun. The loudness will increase with the time you practice...
1:15-1:40 OMG! That was amazing! He's singing a very nice two-part harmony with himself--blowing my mind. MAN I wish I knew about this twenty years ago.
@apppjunkie 0.Listening 1.Relaxation 2.Training 3.Awareness 4.Time (for the body to save the muscles positions to reach the best resonance structure in the vocal space)
I have a question, is there some special thing we should be doing with the tongue??? or its just the lips position??? HELP I LOVE THIS! I WANNA BE ABLE TO DO IT!! :) by the way you are amazing!!! congrats!
@Andresitagp13 in this basic technique I recommend to relax the tongue completely. If you watch my german video "Obertongesangstechnik für lautere Obertöne" with a second technique to amplify the loudness of your overtones I use a special position of the tongue. Try to imitate the sound just by listening to this video and sing with me... Good luck and all the best for you and your voice!
It also helps if you open your mouth wide--like you have an apple in it and you pitch your breath toward the roof of your mouth. I love how it feels! I learned years go at Esalen with Jill Purce, who also teaches this.
It also helps if you open your mouth wide--like you have an apple in it and you pitch your breath toward the roof of your mouth. I love how it feels! I learned years go at Esalen with Jill Purce, who also teaches this.
@cridOP there is a difference, because during singing harmonics the frequencies are fixed by the fundamental note (only x-times so fast), during whisteling you can slide between the frequencies
Ja.
I've always been intrested in overtone singing since I heard the main theme from the game Operation Flashpoing 2 (which was tuvan throat singing). So I decided to start doing it myself. After 15 min I just made my first overtone! :D Thanks for this superb tutorial!
Does chronic sinusitis and throat congestion reduce the effectiveness of the overtones? I have chronic sinusitis, and I believe I'm doing the technique pretty well, but the overtones sound rather faded and weak.
WHAT A TRIP! THAT IS JUST AMAZING. I DIDN'T HEAR THE UPWARD TONES AT FIRST.... JUST THE VOWEL CHANGES,, BUT MIDWAY THROUGH THE VIDEO I HEARD TONES ASCENDING, LIKE A SCALE, UP AND THEN DOWN.
@GA1313E You are right - there are a lot of harmonics in the sound of the didgeridoo and playing it is sometimes similar to singing overtones. Try to play didgeridoo only with your mouth helps to developing the overtone voice
I'm very new to overtone singing. I've got a very loud and clear whistle at the very top, yet I've only been able to go to the the third tone above the fundamental, roughly do re mi. Are there any tricks to being able to produce a higher tone? I've heard traditional throat singers that are able to get the 5th tone above the fundamental, so I know it's possible.
@Greatheil there should be a few more overtones than 3 or 5. You can sing up to 12 and more harmonics above the fundamental, but it is hard to sing more. Only one time in my life I´ve got the 27th overtone. You will find the higher frequencies in the sound-area of the english vowel e (in german i). Try to change any other vowel very slowly in the direction of e (german i) and enjoy, what happens... Good luck M.G.
@mmysticus I am using three techniques, one of them is nasal, you can listen the change between the techniques in my newest video here in this channel, it is titled with my name...
it is called bird-technique in english or sygyt in Tuva and Mongolia. Sing the word bird and before you come to the sound D, you combine the actual position of your tongue with the vowel technique, explained in this video here. I call it L-Technique, because I hold my tongue similar to the position of singing L, but ot exactly. Just figure it out by listening. Good luck. M.G.
@skiddlecrumms it is a question of focussing your awareness of listening on a single frequency in the vocal sound, which is a combination of many harmonic frequencies. Through training your body optimize the position of all muscles for the perfect sound of a single overtone better and better and louder as well...M.G.
Hi, I've read a lot on the website of Miroslav, but unfortunately I have the same problem... when I see the other vids here, you can hear the overtones as like a second voice, but not at mine -.-
Thank you so much for putting this up in english, i watch many overtone tutorials, but your video made me produse my first overtone, and that was in german witch i dont really understand. Now i just need to find out how to get louder ovretones.
I recommend focussing your attention to one of the overtones and hold it so long as you can, because the body needs time to optimize the resonance structure of your mouth and pharynx. If you have the feeling to be in a deep contact with one overtone, the body safes the position of all needed muscles. Enjoy the clarity of sound and allow the slow change to the next overtone. Good luck!!!
Thanks a lot, that worked.

:) by the way you are amazing!!! congrats!
Andresitagp13 1 year ago
@Andresitagp13 in this basic technique I recommend to relax the tongue completely. If you watch my german video "Obertongesangstechnik für lautere Obertöne" with a second technique to amplify the loudness of your overtones I use a special position of the tongue. Try to imitate the sound just by listening to this video and sing with me... Good luck and all the best for you and your voice!

It also helps if you open your mouth wide--like you have an apple in it and you pitch your breath toward the roof of your mouth. I love how it feels! I learned years go at Esalen with Jill Purce, who also teaches this.

Is it also like whisteling at the same time as you sing?
Thank you.
cridOP 1 year ago
@cridOP there is a difference, because during singing harmonics the frequencies are fixed by the fundamental note (only x-times so fast), during whisteling you can slide between the frequencies
MiroslavGrosser 1 year ago
no way no way!!! i just did it with ...without doing anything but singing and slowly changing the vowel like you said, haha incredible :D

Just a question... are you actually whistling the harmonics ?

Great job! I'm waiting part 2...

Ja.

I've always been intrested in overtone singing since I heard the main theme from the game Operation Flashpoing 2 (which was tuvan throat singing). So I decided to start doing it myself. After 15 min I just made my first overtone! :D Thanks for this superb tutorial!

at 3:38 I can haerd distinctivly 6 harmonics descending. wow!!!

what would happen if you played a digeridoo with that?
Rellizate 1 year ago

Very helpful. Thankyou very much mr baldhead overtone meastro.

Is it just me or is it similar to playing the didgeridoo?
I myself think its just me...
GA1313E 1 year ago 4
@GA1313E You are right - there are a lot of harmonics in the sound of the didgeridoo and playing it is sometimes similar to singing overtones. Try to play didgeridoo only with your mouth helps to developing the overtone voice

the 3 descending overtone notes in 3:40 -3:42 sounded so cool

very nice! You have a great talent to be able to jump back and forth between them so quickly!

Greatheil 1 year ago
@Greatheil there should be a few more overtones than 3 or 5. You can sing up to 12 and more harmonics above the fundamental, but it is hard to sing more. Only one time in my life I´ve got the 27th overtone. You will find the higher frequencies in the sound-area of the english vowel e (in german i). Try to change any other vowel very slowly in the direction of e (german i) and enjoy, what happens... Good luck M.G.

do you use your nasal part for the obertones?
mmysticus 1 year ago
@mmysticus I am using three techniques, one of them is nasal, you can listen the change between the techniques in my newest video here in this channel, it is titled with my name...
MiroslavGrosser 1 year ago
how do you get that whistle effect you had in the ode to joy video?
sarahmpkin 1 year ago
it is called bird-technique in english or sygyt in Tuva and Mongolia. Sing the word bird and before you come to the sound D, you combine the actual position of your tongue with the vowel technique, explained in this video here. I call it L-Technique, because I hold my tongue similar to the position of singing L, but ot exactly. Just figure it out by listening. Good luck. M.G.
MiroslavGrosser 1 year ago
gah! so good but no telling how to actually exagerate the overtone enough to hear it!!!
skiddlecrumms 1 year ago

Now i just need to find out how to get louder ovretones.
fibiger12 2 years ago
I recommend focussing your attention to one of the overtones and hold it so long as you can, because the body needs time to optimize the resonance structure of your mouth and pharynx. If you have the feeling to be in a deep contact with one overtone, the body safes the position of all needed muscles. Enjoy the clarity of sound and allow the slow change to the next overtone. Good luck!!!
