Elliott was not only a great emotive, poetic, hypnotic/narcotic/ songwriter but knew how to move around the neck of the guitar, change keys add colorful sophisticated chords and progressions, and his right hand rythmn is top notch .An Ultra creative, albeit a depressive, in every sense of the word .I teach about 6+ of his songs to anyone that's willing.
This is one of my favorite Elliott songs (actually, one of my favorites of all time), so when my guitar teacher told me I could learn any song I wanted this was one of the first I suggested, though I knew that Elliott's songs tend to be difficult to learn. He wasn't familiar with Elliott, so I had him listen to the song and he said:
"It sounds like he's using irregular chords... it's like he's just making them up as he goes..."
@galaxygirllove i dont think the chords are that irregular, you'll be ok. Let us know how it goes, always fun to hear what guitar teachers think of great musicians.
@galaxygirllove the chords arent really irregular at all, im not trying to be an asshole, but your guitar teacher sounds like he or she has a really bad ear for music, and yeah i probably sounded like and asshole there but this song isnt as complicated as you would think
@aaronmyers1982 Yeah I know heatmiser. I mostly mean vocalwise. Like I dont hear his voice at all. Sounds like someone altogether different is singing
@mymayapapaya I think it could be one of those tunes that has to grow on you. I've only listened to it 2 or 3 times and I'm not really feeling it. Every now & then I think I hear the Elliott Smith I'm familiar with in there somewhere. I love Elliott Smith though. Its like re-discovering the beatles all over again. u'll notice my faves are littered with Elliott Smith tunes. Its flattering 2 hear from u by the way. I've known who u are for a while. Your channel always pops up in my recommendations
@mymayapapaya I think this song was recorded on his 4-track tape recorder, and he lowered the pitch with the pitch wheel. That's why the vocals have that weird harmony.
@mymayapapaya i agree i love his voice how its kinda scratchy it sounds like he really is sick of someone, everyonce in a while i just replay that beginning part when he starts with youre a crisis
@aaronmyers1982 Personally I think it sounds kind of like he did live. I think this was before he had really gotten his production down so the vocal sounds more raw and less polished. I think it's more of a recording/production thing than a performance one. (Although he does have a bit more of an accent here imo.)
this has always been one of my favorites of his....ok is it just me, or is his voice unbelievably magnificent in this song? (i mean moreso than usual)
I listen to it over and over. Sometimes the same song over and over. After Roman Candle there were a few things that i enjoyed a whole lot but Roman Candle is the Album that did it for me
It's easy to say that Last Call is Elliott Smith's greatest song, but it's easy to say that about 10 or 12 other songs of his as well. That is the mark of a true genius.
if you know anything about it, he was stabbed. there has been and probably never will be anything conclusive about who did as his body was cremated. his relationship at the time was described as 'sid and nancy' and he'd gone through a lot. I think it's open to speculation.
aidan610, I agree. My sister called me at 4:00 AM when it happened. She worked for his A&R rep in LA. He had defensive wounds. He was murdered. That being said, the crime doesn't change the fact that Elliott is the best songwriter of our generation.
40 years ago we were so lucky that a wonderful person came to being. even though we think of elliott on the day he passed, this is the day i choose to reflect and celebrate his life on because it was the beginning of someone and something great. as always we send all our love to everyone on this day and we are happy to know that elliott's memory will not only last longer than 34 years...40 years..but it will last forever. thank you all for remembering elliott especially on this special day.
god i dont want to sound morbid or weird, but isnt the fact that he died romantic and almost fitting for his music style... i dont want to say that im glad he died, because im not, i guess im just saying that his death only adds to the majesty, sorrow, and inherent beauty of his music. any opinions on this thought?
no matter how he died, it's apparent the amount of hardship in his life. those who think he was murdered try to downplay this and yet those who think he killed himself try to exaggerate. just put me in the middle please, cuz idk!
This is probably my favorite Elliott song. To be honest, I like that it's not one of his most recognized, it feels like it's kinda my own. Listened to it a lot around a certain point of my life, became like a soundtrack.
I have every single one of his songs even all his live albums..Live at the embryo festival is unreal..and i have him singing oasis supersonic nd Neil youngs harvest moon
Jenny Lewis has one good song, and technically it's not even hers. Dntel, "Roll On." Other than that, agreed. Unless you're a dude, then you probably wouldn't like that either. haha.
amazing human being?, i never met elliott, but the music reflects a reflecting, and maybe a little confused, human being...but i love the music and lyrics, so, yeah amazing...
elliott was absolutely an amazing human being. Watch or read any of his interviews, he's probably the nicest, most honest, heartfelt musician in America in the last 50 years. Who gives a fuck about the drugs, suicide, whatever. It doesn't change the fact that he changed millions of lives giving all he had, if anything that martyrdom *makes* him an incredible human.

If you believe that he actually killed himself, maybe. There's plenty of reason to doubt that it was a suicide.
