  • Elliott was not only a great emotive, poetic, hypnotic/narcotic/ songwriter but knew how to move around the neck of the guitar, change keys add colorful sophisticated chords and progressions, and his right hand rythmn is top notch .An Ultra creative, albeit a depressive, in every sense of the word .I teach about 6+ of his songs to anyone that's willing.

  • Going back with the woman i loved for years for the third time ... this made the end of the third and final act more sweet

  • This is one of my favorite Elliott songs (actually, one of my favorites of all time), so when my guitar teacher told me I could learn any song I wanted this was one of the first I suggested, though I knew that Elliott's songs tend to be difficult to learn. He wasn't familiar with Elliott, so I had him listen to the song and he said:

"It sounds like he's using irregular chords... it's like he's just making them up as he goes..."

    Wish me luck.

  • @galaxygirllove i dont think the chords are that irregular, you'll be ok. Let us know how it goes, always fun to hear what guitar teachers think of great musicians.

  • @galaxygirllove the chords arent really irregular at all, im not trying to be an asshole, but your guitar teacher sounds like he or she has a really bad ear for music, and yeah i probably sounded like and asshole there but this song isnt as complicated as you would think

  • AND I WANTED HER TO TELL ME THAT SHE WOULD NEVER WAKE ME!

  • i wanted him to tell me that he would never stop singing

  • I wanted her to tell me that she would never wake me.

  • It doesnt sound like him at all. *scratches head*

  • @aaronmyers1982 have you heard much heatmiser?

  • @aaronmyers1982 Yeah I know heatmiser. I mostly mean vocalwise. Like I dont hear his voice at all. Sounds like someone altogether different is singing

  • @aaronmyers1982 but do you like it? I love how his voice sounds in this

  • @mymayapapaya I think it could be one of those tunes that has to grow on you. I've only listened to it 2 or 3 times and I'm not really feeling it. Every now & then I think I hear the Elliott Smith I'm familiar with in there somewhere. I love Elliott Smith though. Its like re-discovering the beatles all over again. u'll notice my faves are littered with Elliott Smith tunes. Its flattering 2 hear from u by the way. I've known who u are for a while. Your channel always pops up in my recommendations

  • @aaronmyers1982 thanks I don't usually post comments

  • @mymayapapaya I think this song was recorded on his 4-track tape recorder, and he lowered the pitch with the pitch wheel. That's why the vocals have that weird harmony.

  • @mymayapapaya i agree i love his voice how its kinda scratchy it sounds like he really is sick of someone, everyonce in a while i just replay that beginning part when he starts with youre a crisis

  • @aaronmyers1982 Personally I think it sounds kind of like he did live. I think this was before he had really gotten his production down so the vocal sounds more raw and less polished. I think it's more of a recording/production thing than a performance one. (Although he does have a bit more of an accent here imo.)

  • wait is he by himself or with a bassist

  • @bosly8894 he played both

  • Lol the girl who showed me this guy for the first time HATES kiss..

  • This song puts into words, what you thought couldn't be...thanks for that Elliott.

  • makes me think of my drunk dad and his yelling...how i feel when that happens. The ultimate fuck you repercussion...so close to me.

  • What album is this on??

  • @PopSong1 it's on his first one... Roman Candle

  • @mymayapapaya Thanks

  • Uh, new favorite song, right here.

  • @fireyeyedtyrants I salute you on recognising the brilliance of this man.

  • @mozart was so overated:D

  • this has always been one of my favorites of his....ok is it just me, or is his voice unbelievably magnificent in this song? (i mean moreso than usual)

  • I love it!!!

  • apparently he was an asshole personally......i can't deny my love for his music though

  • why do you think he was an asshole? I don't believe that from what i have come to learn of him.

  • @doucthec why do you think he was an asshole personally?

  • @doucthec it's weird that you'd say that, because that's kind of the complete opposite of anything i've ever heard, about him...

  • roman candle will always be damn dear

  • does anyone know the chords for this song? i can't find them anywhere.

  • Very poignant song

  • Roman Candle is one of my favorite albums ever.

I listen to it over and over. Sometimes the same song over and over. After Roman Candle there were a few things that i enjoyed a whole lot but Roman Candle is the Album that did it for me

  • i miss you...

  • this and no name #2 are heartbreakingly dark songs

  • IT NFUCKIN' BREAKS MY HEART...

  • It's easy to say that Last Call is Elliott Smith's greatest song, but it's easy to say that about 10 or 12 other songs of his as well. That is the mark of a true genius.

  • the most inspiring, talented and complete musician, in my own opinion...

  • most fucking definitely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Alvin2K4S i think most agree...

  • What a person what an artist what a lyrics

  • if you know anything about it, he was stabbed. there has been and probably never will be anything conclusive about who did as his body was cremated. his relationship at the time was described as 'sid and nancy' and he'd gone through a lot. I think it's open to speculation.

  • aidan610, I agree. My sister called me at 4:00 AM when it happened. She worked for his A&R rep in LA. He had defensive wounds. He was murdered. That being said, the crime doesn't change the fact that Elliott is the best songwriter of our generation.

  • 40 years ago we were so lucky that a wonderful person came to being. even though we think of elliott on the day he passed, this is the day i choose to reflect and celebrate his life on because it was the beginning of someone and something great. as always we send all our love to everyone on this day and we are happy to know that elliott's memory will not only last longer than 34 years...40 years..but it will last forever. thank you all for remembering elliott especially on this special day.

  • I think Elliot Smith would like it if there could be one youtube video where people didn't argue over it.

  • Comment removed

  • duhh that's how he died? it was like a proven fact. he fucking stabbed himself. but seriously. hes amazing. and makes amazing music <33.

  • It's a proven fact he was stabbed, not who stabbed him.

  • That kiss album pic makes me smile every time!

    :)

  • This song is so haunting and beautiful. Elliott never fails to produce beauty.

  • god i dont want to sound morbid or weird, but isnt the fact that he died romantic and almost fitting for his music style... i dont want to say that im glad he died, because im not, i guess im just saying that his death only adds to the majesty, sorrow, and inherent beauty of his music. any opinions on this thought?

  • If you believe that he actually killed himself, maybe. There's plenty of reason to doubt that it was a suicide.

  • just listen to his songs. he speaks of suicide a lot, so much sadness. i dont doubt that he killed himself.

  • no matter how he died, it's apparent the amount of hardship in his life. those who think he was murdered try to downplay this and yet those who think he killed himself try to exaggerate. just put me in the middle please, cuz idk!

  • This is probably my favorite Elliott song. To be honest, I like that it's not one of his most recognized, it feels like it's kinda my own. Listened to it a lot around a certain point of my life, became like a soundtrack.

  • @CSchwarten This is also probably my favorite Elliott song. It sounds so deep, so rock, so intimate, etc

  • this is the best song in a world.

  • he has some really sweet songs.

    too bad he's not around.

    the best always die.

    thanks for posting. <3

  • Elliott Smith. The most underrated artist of all time.

This song, one of the most underrated Elliot Smith songs ever.

    RIP <3

  • wow..this is just fucking amazing..

    its great to paint to..

  • Is the kid with the kiss album Elliott maya?

  • That's ELLIOTT! :)

  • I have every single one of his songs even all his live albums..Live at the embryo festival is unreal..and i have him singing oasis supersonic nd Neil youngs harvest moon

  • wonderful song..

  • Great song of human emotions!

  • Nice videos Elliot Smith is the only thing I really can listen to other than Jenny Lewis

  • how can anyone actually like jenny lewis? do you even like music?

  • Jenny Lewis has one good song, and technically it's not even hers. Dntel, "Roll On." Other than that, agreed. Unless you're a dude, then you probably wouldn't like that either. haha.

  • my current favorite by elliott!

  • it loaded ok

  • "that song has too many words..."

  • lol :)

  • I love this song more than I assumed I would.

  • the best.

  • RIP Elliott, you never ganna be forgotten

  • man life is a shitty place for me..

  • amazing human being?, i never met elliott, but the music reflects a reflecting, and maybe a little confused, human being...but i love the music and lyrics, so, yeah amazing...

    last call...

  • You can be amazing and confused. :)

  • elliott was absolutely an amazing human being. Watch or read any of his interviews, he's probably the nicest, most honest, heartfelt musician in America in the last 50 years. Who gives a fuck about the drugs, suicide, whatever. It doesn't change the fact that he changed millions of lives giving all he had, if anything that martyrdom *makes* him an incredible human.

  • he still IS amazing, cause i am hearing his music over and over and over....bottle up and explode, dude !!!;-)meaning youre damn right, juan !!!

  • This is probably my favourite Elliott song, along with King's Crossing and The Biggest Lie.

    Thanks so much.

Rest In Peace, Elliott. You saved lives.

  • This is his most incredible song ever. It's just so good. RIP.

  • Brilliant song. His voice is so much raspier in his earlier work.

  • RIP Elliott.. Luv yuh.
