This is one American who is more than willing to give credit where credit is due. The Great Patriotic War was truly the greatest military achievement of the past millennium, an incredible tribute to the will and bravery of the Soviet people. Hopefully, future textbooks in American schools will give Georgy Zhukov his rightful title as the best general of World War II.

Britain the tiny island nation kept the Germans from even invading them by simply having a good enough air force that they won the battle of Britain. @az4u100 I have read several books on WW2. I have seen plenty of sites. And most of the credible ones, all widely agree the Soviets were ill prepared to attack Germany. Germany sent 3 million men into Germany conquering vast amounts of territory. If anything where is the proof of this growing war machine? If anything it wasn't until the reinforcement's from the east arrived and spearheaded the first Soviet counter offensive, that the Germans actually stopped.

If they were trying to sneak and slowly build up forces at the border it would have taken more then the month between the German invasion and supposed Russian. As an American, I will concede that World War II was mostly a Soviet-Nazi war with a few things happening on the side. In the U.S. they don't really like to emphasize that reality, which is a shame, really. In Stalingrad alone three to four times more people died than the number of Americans lost in both WWI and WWII combined. Replicate that a few hundred times over, and you get an inkling of what the Soviet people lost in that massive cataclysm.

@az4u100 If the Soviets were planning to attack, they would have raised all those conscript armies they raised in the first 6 months way before. None of that makes any sense at all. If they were trying to sneak and slowly build up forces at the border it would have taken more then the month between the German invasion and supposed Russian. But I do understand Hitler's ideology and the German's at the time led to an inevitable conflict. But are you saying Germany had no chance to win or what?

In fact in November 1939 the German Naval staff produced a study (on the possibility of an invasion of Britain) and concluded that it required two preconditions, air and naval superiority, neither of which Germany ever had. after the decisive british victory of the 'Battle of Britain' all hopes for a german invasion where gone.

It is also known Hitler didn't advance his navy because he also considered the Soviets who he wanted to really conquer. And that was a mistake, he should have at least come to peace with Britain anything was smarter than leaving the worlds largest empire at war with you next door, only to invade the worlds largest army. Then declare war on the worlds largest economy.

I mean i'm sorry you think you're the only one who has read what these men said, but the facts prove a largely unprepared Red army was attacked a month prior to what you say was they're planned attack. That absolutely no sense, because most of the red army wasn't even assembled.

Here are some simple numbers to highlight who contributed what to the victory in WW2.
Total WW2 Axis KIA: ~7 million (4.5 million German Reich, 2 million Japan, 0.5 million others).
Eastern Front (i.e.inflicted by USSR) Axis KIA: ~4.5 million (4 million German Reich, 0.5 million others).
Western Front (i.e. inflicted by US+Britain+France) Axis KIA : 0.6 million.
So basically ~2/3 of all Axis military deaths were inflicted by USSR, USA gets most of remaining, and everyone else rode along.

That being said, it didn't turn out for the best for the Soviet people and the people newly conquered by the Red Army that Stalin was still in power after 1945. In fact, a huge number of casualties would've been avoided if Stalin hadn't purged the Red Army of capable generals from 1937 to 1940. The Nazis would've been stopped short of Minsk or even earlier if those Red Army men had still been alive. Stalin was short-sighted monster who almost destroyed the Soviet Union.

As an American, I will concede that World War II was mostly a Soviet-Nazi war with a few things happening on the side. In the U.S. they don't really like to emphasize that reality, which is a shame, really. In Stalingrad alone three to four times more people died than the number of Americans lost in both WWI and WWII combined. Replicate that a few hundred times over, and you get an inkling of what the Soviet people lost in that massive cataclysm.

Not to discredit the efforts of the other Allies but the Soviet Union broke the Nazis, they killed about 5 milion of the Axis Forces, and lost about 11 million soldiers and 14 - 17 million civilians (and it could be much much higher than this). They might not have been ethical at all times but they bled more than all of the other Allies combined.

d@magau100 Yeah, don't forget that it wasn't only the USSR that ended the Nazi regime. It was also the armies of the U.S.A, Great Britain/Canada, and France. Although I think the Soviet Union played THE main role in defeating Germany, I still believe that those other guys deserve some credit as well.

Wow, you are a complete retard. USSR never occupied Finland. Helsinki was never occupied and the Finnish government never had to capitulate or go into exile. The amount of territory ceded did add up to about 20% but this was not won by force of arms but rather through an unfair peace treaty that Finland had no choice but to accept due to not being in a position to negotiate after the war. 40% of Finlands industrial capacity? Apology accepted. But this is a sensitive topic for us Finns. I can't think of another small liberal democratic nation that was attacked by a totalitarian superpower, fended off an invasion force without any help from the other democracies, then had to align itself with Nazi Germany (for the above reason), won hard fought defensive victories in the last stages of the conflict (look up Tali-Ihantala, Lake Ladoga, etc.) then had to cede territory in an unfair peace treaty. Karelia is Finland.
