A lot of graveyards that are actually used as small villages, sometimes have a 6 year period in which the body may be let in a tomb, you can then re-new this for longer, but in some places, you cannot do this and so the tomb is exhumed and removed from the cemetary to create more space.

@Emilwindows If your in the US you would pretty much have to be Jewish to be buried without a vault. Most cemeteries require some sort of Burial vault for safety reasons. Mainly so when the caretakers take an excavator over your grave it doesn't cave in. typically Jewish cemeteries dont require a burial vault.

After 100 years they can re-sell the gravesite and remove any remains left from previous burials, even in the US. Now though due to shortages of land, caskets are being buried on top of other caskets.

In Mexico this is done often, if the family can no longer pay for the spot for their love ones they will be remove for one who can, in Juanojuato mexico there is a mummy museum that is just that.

in the us when you buy a plot you dont have to worry about anymore fees to pay in some other countries your family have to pay to keep the plot, if you cant afford to pay it they move the body...talk about a death tax huh...

After 100 years they can re-sell the gravesite and remove any remains left from previous burials, even in the US. Now though due to shortages of land, caskets are being buried on top of other caskets.
