@4568shannon maybe you are the one who needs to research...type into google the words "opel omega" and see how australian holdens are.Holden commodores here, are last years opels in germany...go research dick!
I noticed a cigarette logo at the football game. It then appeared painted on a truck driving by. It has been years since anyone could get away with such a thing is this country! Does anyone know what the rules are like in Australia these days?
Love this nostaglic 70's ad but I wish they had shown some rugby league footage instead of the afl (or vfl as it was known then) from the 70's especially the Manly sea eagles as they won 4 premierships in the 70's. Other than you're not australian unless you like football, meat pies, kangaroos and HOLDEN CARS.
@mgo26 Are you real aussie or just some pom who likes to insult us real australian's about our love of holdens and rugby league. Yes I know holden has been under the gm banner pretty much since day dot but the holden engine company originated in south australia and in my heart will always be australian. As for your comment about rugby league I couldn't give a stuff how little it rates in england but it rates very well especially in NSW. We have more than football code in oz.
@hsvrich7 You love a British sport and an American car, whilst I am a devotee of the only native Australian game, yet somehow you manage to tag me as a 'pom'. Do you have a coherent argument, or are you just inviting me to call you a semi-literate moron?
@mgo26 You are a real charmer aren't you mgo26.! I always believe that if you haven't got anything nice to say then don't say anything at all but in your case I make an exception. You missed my point from my original message. The ad was obviously made in victoria so they had afl or vfl as it was known then. I only wished they also made a similar ad in nsw where they could have had some footage from league from the 70's. I really takes a big person to insult people over a computer screen.
any one who poo poos this commercial should get in thier prius eat a asparagus n salmon tartlet with sea salt foam on the way to sycronised swimming wearing a t shirt with a sparrow on it . knobs
wow interesting, i was young when this came out, it features the vb commodore which was released in 1978 so i believe this commercial started airing that year, i was 3 :P
yeah right meat pies by law in australia can contain 25% of other(other being absolutely anything from anywhere)kangaroos are best when shot and holden have been american since 68 its just the fact that its in australia that makes holdens australian these days truthfully they are as australian as chevrolet even this advert is a direct rip off from the states but in the states its apple pie baseball something i cant remember and chevrolet.
and nothing is unaustralian we let any piece of shit in
@560287144602817 If you want to get technical, Holden's been "American" since 1931, when GM first bought them out, and they'd already been building bodies for Ford and GM for about ten years at that point.
But you should be proud of Holden! They build great cars. There's a reason this yank loves Holden and Ford Australia: Australia still builds real cars, not like most of the underpowered FWD garbage we're forced to drive in America. About all we have to be proud of any more is the Corvette.
It is interesting to note that the "football" scenes shown are from Australian Rules games which would have annoyed anyone in New South Wales a the time because Rugby League was king in this state when these ads were shown.
Is it unAustralian to dislike meat pies? I don't mind Kangaroos and I drive a Holden.
@GhostsnGoblins Mate, it's a cheesy commercial that we're watching for a laugh or a bit of nostalgia. It shouldn't be taken as a serious declaration of 'Australian-ness'. If anything it demonstrates how poor we are culturally: okay, football and kangaroos are ours, but the car is American and the meat pie is British. And I have no idea what the 'Aussie way' is, or what any of this has to do with Kevin Rudd!
You refer to the car as American. However, it is my understanding that Holden's were made in Australia. At least they were when this ad was made. Care to explain.
@Smartboy8877 They certainly are made in Australia, but Holden is a company started and owned by General Motors. The profits go straight to Detroit, just as they did when this commercial was made.
Now I understand. Having lived in Austrailia, I know that a lot of the the things there are made in factories that are owned by companies headquartered in the United States, England and countless other countries. At least it gives jobs to some of the people who live there. Even if they are of Greek or Turkish decent!
@Smartboy8877 holdens are based on chev ,vaxhaul and opel bodys. No holden has ever been australian. Its just the marketing name for GM here in australia.
Didn't notice the VH but I did notice a few VB and VCs, and Gemini and Isuzu ute... An interesting approach of Holdens simply to slot in shots of early 80s models into an advert originally introduced in the mid-70s...

@restoremaz People know Holden is an American multinational.
No need to put people down.
The VE is Aus designed.
And the Falcon is basically a constantly updated xk falcon.
All part of being a multinational

@restoremaz Not since the VE, as stated.
Opel does not have a rwd platform anymore.
