Members of your church have admitted to believing in the "potential to become gods one day." And simply because the Bible records the practice or commission of something doesn't mean God condones it. Murder and lying are also in the Bible (Gen. 4:8-9); the Bible also records a seance in 1 Samuel 28. David committed adultery with Bathsheba in 2 Samuel 11. I think we'd agree we're not supposed to do those things even though they're found in the Bible.

actually, his "trial" in Bainbridge was for vagrancy, and Josiah Stowell testified FOR Joseph, saying that he had hired Joseph to find buried treasure. He was never convicted of any crime.

One can't be an adulterer if one is married to the woman. And some of those men came back to the church later.

"Actually" Joseph was fined for being a "glass-looker", same as a con artist. (That was certainly prophetic.) Also Judge Neely pronounced Joseph "guilty." Joseph had a chance to clear his name before a jury but decided to wave that and take "leg bail." There was enough evidence to find him guilty before a jury, and Joseph knew it.
