could me your mass air flow sensor or your idle control valve if they dont work turn the idle up till ya can sort a soloution out hope your cars sorted soon :D

my 92' 318is also had that problem. "check engine" light went on so they did a computer scan and it indicated that it was a sensor, the one right after the air filter box, i forgot what its called but i swapped it and it still does the same thing. wtf!?
my car did that, it was false air from the intake. We just changed the intake gasket, but it could altso he the lamda or the thing that does that the car holds the 650-700rmp sensor:P
hey i got an 318is too, my rpms when i have no shift is always lower than all other normal cars..My father usin it also and he says its nothing but the rpm are arround 650,700
i had the same problem too it was something called lenda steel thats what leb mechanics call it , it is on the exhaust below the car its related with the oxyden sensor via car computer , its a sensor nothing to worry about

I've the '94 318is Motorsport International edition, and the temperature is off normal, originally it is a little less. Do you have an ABS failure? Is it because of one of the sensors? And what about that airbag light?
Replaced lamda, crankshaft, camshaft, Throttle position sensor and a breath valve only to find out that it was cause by a cut wire feeding the Throttle position sensor. Best bet is to go and have a diagnostics done and it will tell you where its coming from
hmm i've noticed your engine's tempreture is off normal as well. i have a fully stock 318is E36 1994, even after a track day the tempreture should not go past the medium mark. hope you find out whats causing the revs to go crazy tho :) cheers

MAF air boot has holes, or the vacuum hoses do, or , lastly, idle valve. Really, this is a easy thing to fix.

ok, the crank shaft sensor could be gone
But, I had the the same problem in my E30
What I did is, put High grade fuel in, and a bottle of injector cleaner, or simply, you need some new plugs and distributer
I changed those on my bmw and it is working tip top now

:)..airbag..was from a crash... it was not been deployed... and only the light remains... and i solved .the temperature too ... more cooling fluid
