First thing, REM desperately needed touring live musicians not drum machines and tons of samplers, and surely hiring Ken was a good deal for the time they gotten to keys and electronic sounds. Then it's Joey, who I bet came as a part of the contract with his father, who I guess was the co-producer of the album [Up], am I right?

Actually Joey Waronker is a really talented drummer. I think they went to Bill Reiflin because he has more of a rock sensibility, which not only works better with their new material (see Acellerate) but for arena shows as well.
