First thing, REM desperately needed touring live musicians not drum machines and tons of samplers, and surely hiring Ken was a good deal for the time they gotten to keys and electronic sounds. Then it's Joey, who I bet came as a part of the contract with his father, who I guess was the co-producer of the album [Up], am I right?
What's the tune in the background while Stipey's introducing the band?
Actually Joey Waronker is a really talented drummer. I think they went to Bill Reiflin because he has more of a rock sensibility, which not only works better with their new material (see Acellerate) but for arena shows as well.
Brilliant! Thank you for uploading. Do you have an MPEG of the entire show (including this and 'The One I Love' etc not included in the MTV broadcast)? If so, please could you upload this somewhere where I can download it.
i think stipey is a little obsessed with andy kauffman. He was funny though.

I love that they have the first Unplugged sessions playing on the TV screens behind the band.

Why was this Unplugged never released? Actually, why weren't any of REM's Unplugged sessions never released? I got the 1st one on bootleg!!!

I think they're probably saving it for a rainy day, at the moment they're still on top form - there's no need to release the unplugged.

All these videos are great, does anyone know when these performances where?
Although in this video I do wonder if the drummer struggles a bit because he entry to the chorus is different the last time to the first 2...
