Someone gave me the BG firesteel for xmas and i noticed it wouldn't last very long, I started a fire with it to test it out and though it does throw good sparks it wears super fast, if i were able to get 100 fires out of it I would be amazed
gerber stands by there knife life time warranty? yea sure if u pay 40$ to ship it to them and back... cus the stores u buy there shit from aint doin anything!
Bought myself one of the BG Ultimate Survival knives for my birthday. Like it so far, but the real test of field usage will have to wait until spring or summer (camping season). Good ergonomic feel to the knife, edge needed touched up a bit to achieve its full potential for sharpness.
BTW, it's Ferrocerium rod.(ferro-CER-ee-um)... an alloy of Iron (Fe, atomic number 26) and Cerium (Ce, atomic number 58), plus a sprinkling of rare earth metals. It's not ferroceum, ferrocium, ferroseeum, etc.
Esee junglas is my next blade, i got the bk2 and i love it! But i want a longer blade to help out in the cold and the junglas is a really sweeet blade i really like it, no frills with that one for sure. What i like about the bk2 is that i can really beat the shit out of it and it will keep smiling with its grind all the way to the tip, hard to beat that in a knife, a little to short for my system though.
Hey man nice video, i kind of feel sorry for bear this fail must have let him down, anyway the ferro rod works better if you the ferro rod back instead the knife.
Hey, i have the knife in this video, and i want to file off the serrations, i havnt really done that before i just keep the knife the way it is, how do i file them off without screwing up the whole knife?
Went to Sports Authority today and got this knife, had to get this knife, I love watching Man vs. Wild! Can't wait to try it out fully! Love this knife, highly recommended!
I wonder why they added that serrated area on the edge, as the supplied sharpener only can sharpen the plain edge part of the edge which in time would make half the edge useless in a survival situation that lasted for some time.
I actually consider buying this knife, but I wount do so until they have removed the serrated area on the edge as I find that pretty useless as all its good for is cutting rope, only in a survival situation, whats the chanse of you even having a rope to cut?
@gregboyds Now now Son,Saying that you're dad is a Gay Homosexual Is a very Bad thing when you're married to a 5$ Whore...Don't tell mommy i'm gay,She will divorce me if she finds out.

@Nerfer998 does budget factor in? moras are awsome i dont see a bg knife comparing with the mora for small tasks and fine work moras are awsome paired with a axe or saw a bg knife is a better one tool option i would get a mora and goor axefor superior results sometimes using one tool for to many jobs is a bad idea your will get mediocer results for all multiple tools will work best sorry for the long comment
@Nerfer998 Mora for the win... I have one of these Bear Grylls knifes, it was a gift. Not a huge fan of it, so I put it in my fiancé’s kit. She doesn’t mind it, but she doesn’t really rely on it too much.
For the same amount of money, I definitely prefer my Becker BK2 over the Gerber... Mora's are pretty nice, I like them... but that Becker is damn near indestructible and for a few bucks more than the Mora it may be worth it to check it out as well.
For those that do not already own this ... knife. I would just offer that you may wish to consider the Cold Steel SRK or the Cold Steel Recon Scout or the Becker BK-2 ... I'm just sayin'. If you have your heart set on a Gerber, do the LMF. (but don't).
I have always been taught that you should use the tool for what it's made for = splitting huge logs with a knife isn't really the proper use of this knife. I'm not a survival enthusiast but when i go out to the woods, i ALWAYS bring my small Fiskars camping axe with me. Even the small version of the axe is much more suited for chopping than a small'ish knife. Serrated blade is good for cutting rope and such but a blade that you cannot sharpen in the field is a stupid idea.
thanks- I was really into those knives until now, I apreciate your work, hope your gettin paid, I am old head and have always started fires w/a zippo or bic, ive been trin to start fires with a flint and steel and its HARD. plus weve had nothin but rain for more than a month now. My son got one of these knives. I think it is a very decent product for a very fair price point, but the whistle is of no use to me since it's volume is far from inspiring confidence. I carry whistles in my hunt fannypack that can be heard for perhaps a mile, this little peep of a whistle doesn't cut it!. I too prefer a non serrated blade, but there are those who like them on thier blades. Gerber ought to offer the knife in both configurations.
I get my survival knife form cold steel. Their knife is worth it then couple other knife doesn't stay sharp alot. 18:59 quote "just ripping thou", u need to sharpen a little more or that sharpener is not really good sharpener, cuz the angel does matter where u put it at. I tested on flat whet stone, I have to push it forward instead going backward. The reason why is that some knifes would take that way, but majority of the knives is different.
i saw a video where the tip brakes man i so dissapointed it was weak peace of trash i need to look for something like this knife but of good quality thanx for your help guys
Question, how can you tell if the knife being sold is the first version of the BG Ultimate (the one that has a weak pommel) or the second, better, version? I wanna be able to tell before I go buy from the store. I'm worried the stores in our area might still be selling the first type. Thank you!
@Equip2Endure Oh hey cool. Thanks for the quick reply. So they look totally the same? I was thinking of just ordering from Amazon, maybe just to make sure that it's the new version. :)
Great videos - this looks like a testament to your skilful fire-making skills, rather than any attributes of the ( somewhat lacking ) Bear Grylls knife.
@luizfernandoliberati the one best designed for the job you have to do and that fits your hands and skill sets the best. There is no ONE best knife. There are many good knives, but at the end of the day it's subjective what's the best.
@ZoroSnipez ,yes, testing out the section of the spine designed for this task. Using your your knife on a firesteel is very common place and works very well as long as there is a good angle on the spine, the coasting does not interfere and the metal is of significant hardness.
Adam, you are good at survival right? Rule number 1 when it comes to your winter clothing: NEVER LEAVE YOUR GLOVES ON THE GROUND!
I have experienced this first hand and it will just destroy them. Mine froze up and I ended up freezing on my hands and I couldn't use my trigger finger while on patrol.
Hey guys, if you want to trust your well being to a China made knife in a tough situation, go for it. For me, Kabar, made here in the great USA, all the way !
Guys its insane. In Germany youve got to pay at least 150€. Something like WTF comes to my mind. Why the hell is it so cheap in the U.S? 50Bucks at Ebay.
had this knife out in the bush for an hour and it snapped while makeing a shelter. waste of money, for 60 bucks, id pay 5 dollars more and get the cold steel srk its a great knife, you should do a review on it someday. your videos tell you what you want to know about these knifes and im a fan keep up the good work
i hate combo styles knives, they just don`t work for me i dont see the real use for them, bro am old subcriber of yours!! a love you vids as allways, it will be awsome if you make a vid of diffrent knives bevels and uses!!
@REDLINEKNiFEY If you watch his last few seasons that is the knife he actually uses in the episodes. Its not a bad knife for $50, not the best, but you wont regret it.
Aitor Compass from "jungle King" and Aitor Commando are really weaks and if you try to chop wood, the poor compass won't survive . I broke my Commando compass with few shocks while trying it on a piece of wood (a very old and dry piece of oak) . So if you want to chop wood, Aitors have saw on the blade and emptying the handle . The blade didn't suffered at all neither the handle . Only the poor compass ...

my £22 quid unbranded knife would have doon that all 3 times as better using the factory edge. the price of this knife is just for the name and the extras. i mean, whoes seen bear grylls using it. now that ive ran it through my knife sharpener once or twice it will cut clean through a sapling.

what would you think of a Coleman Fixed-Blade Knife(i got it from walmart)v.s the gerber bear grylls ultimate knife.which do you think is better?p.s i made a small saw on theColeman Fixed-Blade Knife .
paper is really delicate, you need a polished edge to cut paper the way you wanted, the diamond stone has a real tough grain, it tears up more metal to form an edge and its good when your knife is really dull, when you use it it will deminish the ammound of metal on the edge but will leave the edge with microscopical uneven "valleys". After sharpening it with that diamond stone you need to use something to polish it, a low grain stone or even cardboard/leather/regular stone around you will work.
You get what you pay for..... the knives Bear Grylls used to use cost $800.00 plus and there is a long waiting list so again you get what you pay for for.
Save up buy something decent and keep it for years.
I like the test you did with the Knife. Just one think. I'm testing if the blade is sharp enought on my hand - trying to shave it. It is because not all types of steel can make angle (by sharpenign) which is able to shave. And i was able to shave hand with this knife and it was the first think i tryed with it.
With paper test you are not able to compare other knifes, unless you have all the time the same type of paper.
@tomasvrbiak I disagree on the steel. If you know what you are doing (proper technique, consistent angle, right stones for the sharpness, stropping ,etc) then you can make any steel shave. Some steels may not shave and hold their edge as long, but you can still sharpen and polish them to that point.
Great video, my only problem was that you took too long actually getting into the steel. Next time do steel, first then everything else. But over all great.
@AftermathA , Well, I say it's a youth knife, not an amateur. Not to say you may not get it and love it, I just believe you can find a better piece of steel for a better price. You may not get all the bells and whistles, but there are better blades out there.
@Equip2Endure Yes, it's a tool, but a marketing tool. It's for survival, but only for urban survival. When you take a look at the knife, it looks very cheap, with those orange parts. For that money, 80Euro, that's around 113$, and for that you can buy a better knife, whistle, fire starter, and a good casing, etc. It's a good knife to give away if you buy a collectors item DVD box of Bear Grylls. If you go with such a knife on survival, you make a fool off yourself, or a survival wannabe.
@Equip2Endure I even start too think that they payed him to make the ads for the knife. The only thing that comes from him, the input, is his autograph and small guide. It's just expensive merchandise, just like those shirts and posters about tv shows. By the way, very good vids you make, so thumbs up at your vids!
@Igoman1984 IMO, I hate it. The edge geometry is horrific and cannot hold an edge worth crap. On the plus side, the sheath has amazing retention, its cheap and that handle in damn-near indestructible. My philosophy is if you are comfortable with what you have, thats the best knife in the world. Sorry, didn't mean to be an ass. I just say there are better knives out there for the money. (New condor bushlores with wood handles are $25 and they are amazing)
I like the glock81 very much. I have it attached on my 5.11 rush 24 backpack that I use when hunting. The plastic sheath is great with the click system, there is no way the knife can fall out, so you can have it attached upside down if u like. I use the knife mostly for clearing branches that are in the way. I also have the Cold Steel bushman, but I like Glock better, because the handle feels better when chopping. The con is rusting of the knife. For the price I say buy it, if army uses it..
@AftermathA i say for 80 euro you should but better ka bar or something like that because U.S. dollar is less than euro and a good 80 dollar knife is like the ka bar BK2 from amazon.com or something like that
I have the LMF II and have used it a lot while wilderness hiking, chopping wood, cutting food, hammering and just in general duty. I was interested in this knife as it is very similar. I bought it and really like it. It's not the same as the LMF II, but it's not meant for the same purposes either. I haven't used it nearly as much as the LMF II but initially it looks like a nice $50 knife. Thanks for your well done videos.
Adam just subscribed to the channel really liking the content in it. Couldn't help but notice that it said survival training, on your intro, & it looked like you were directing a class, so i was wondering if you do teach classes & if so were? Hopefully is near to were i live. Thanks.

Guys its insane. In Germany youve got to pay at least 150€. Something like WTF comes to my mind. Why the hell is it so cheap in the U.S? 50Bucks at Ebay.

That's not a survival knife. It's a survival kit that comes with a fighting/hunting knife.

Only the poor compass ...

my £22 quid unbranded knife would have doon that all 3 times as better using the factory edge. the price of this knife is just for the name and the extras. i mean, whoes seen bear grylls using it. now that ive ran it through my knife sharpener once or twice it will cut clean through a sapling.

paper is really delicate, you need a polished edge to cut paper the way you wanted, the diamond stone has a real tough grain, it tears up more metal to form an edge and its good when your knife is really dull, when you use it it will deminish the ammound of metal on the edge but will leave the edge with microscopical uneven "valleys". After sharpening it with that diamond stone you need to use something to polish it, a low grain stone or even cardboard/leather/regular stone around you will work.
StoutNerd 8 months ago
You get what you pay for..... the knives Bear Grylls used to use cost $800.00 plus and there is a long waiting list so again you get what you pay for for.
Save up buy something decent and keep it for years.

what is the best knife you own
naruto8999000 8 months ago
I like the test you did with the Knife. Just one think. I'm testing if the blade is sharp enought on my hand - trying to shave it. It is because not all types of steel can make angle (by sharpenign) which is able to shave. And i was able to shave hand with this knife and it was the first think i tryed with it.
With paper test you are not able to compare other knifes, unless you have all the time the same type of paper.
PS: Thanx for this video.
tomasvrbiak 9 months ago
@tomasvrbiak I disagree on the steel. If you know what you are doing (proper technique, consistent angle, right stones for the sharpness, stropping ,etc) then you can make any steel shave. Some steels may not shave and hold their edge as long, but you can still sharpen and polish them to that point.
freerunnin100 8 months ago
Great video, my only problem was that you took too long actually getting into the steel. Next time do steel, first then everything else. But over all great.
joshuatree1001 9 months ago
you should do some cold steel reviews i want to see an outside company review them

Hey..thanks for video.. so, just a question, it worth spending € 80 for this knife for an amateur? Thank you!
AftermathA 9 months ago
@AftermathA , Well, I say it's a youth knife, not an amateur. Not to say you may not get it and love it, I just believe you can find a better piece of steel for a better price. You may not get all the bells and whistles, but there are better blades out there.
Equip2Endure 9 months ago 7
@Equip2Endure .. what knife would you recomend? and do you know any good websites?
TheJohnson666 8 months ago
@Equip2Endure Yes, it's a tool, but a marketing tool. It's for survival, but only for urban survival. When you take a look at the knife, it looks very cheap, with those orange parts. For that money, 80Euro, that's around 113$, and for that you can buy a better knife, whistle, fire starter, and a good casing, etc. It's a good knife to give away if you buy a collectors item DVD box of Bear Grylls. If you go with such a knife on survival, you make a fool off yourself, or a survival wannabe.
periesicsd 8 months ago
@Equip2Endure I even start too think that they payed him to make the ads for the knife. The only thing that comes from him, the input, is his autograph and small guide. It's just expensive merchandise, just like those shirts and posters about tv shows. By the way, very good vids you make, so thumbs up at your vids!

I recomend the Glock knife. Cheap and reliable, look it up on google.
Igoman1984 9 months ago
@Igoman1984 IMO, I hate it. The edge geometry is horrific and cannot hold an edge worth crap. On the plus side, the sheath has amazing retention, its cheap and that handle in damn-near indestructible. My philosophy is if you are comfortable with what you have, thats the best knife in the world. Sorry, didn't mean to be an ass. I just say there are better knives out there for the money. (New condor bushlores with wood handles are $25 and they are amazing)
freerunnin100 8 months ago
@Igoman1984
are you happy with it because th only thing with the bear knife that is really awesome is the knife casing....
greetings and respect
JJengineering 8 months ago
I like the glock81 very much. I have it attached on my 5.11 rush 24 backpack that I use when hunting. The plastic sheath is great with the click system, there is no way the knife can fall out, so you can have it attached upside down if u like. I use the knife mostly for clearing branches that are in the way. I also have the Cold Steel bushman, but I like Glock better, because the handle feels better when chopping. The con is rusting of the knife. For the price I say buy it, if army uses it..
Igoman1984 8 months ago
