This man was a great genius. One of the greatest musicians and songwriters ever. Absolutely. I think his music was there in the background every other days or so on the radio in the mornings in our kitchen when I was a little kid, because I have always had a particular love for that kind of music. "Live at the Sahara Tahoe" was one of the best albums of the 70s and I still own it. Hayes' stuff was incredible, and it never should have stopped, but his 'quiet storm' soul was soon at odds with rising disco by mid-decade. Nor was he was the only great R&B not suited to that style. It took many a casualty. He is missed but his marvelous material will continue to mint new fans looking for substance in music, craftsmanship and, yes, even genius. R.I.P.
