Calling some snooty Indian bitch a popadom is not racist bullying. Russel Brand is a cunt and this man is a pretentious simpleton. How many white kids were mugged and beaten up by packs of negroes since this retarded video was made? I am glad that the UK is becoming a laughing stock in sport, culture and business.
I despair... If you don't realise that what Stewart Lee and Johnny Vegas are doing here IS a comedy sketch, then you just don't understand it. It's the same as the talking heads pieces between Stewart Lee and Amando Ianucci - they play them straight, but in fact they're ludicrous sketches. If you can't see this, then there's about as much point in you expressing your opinion on this as there would be in a dog critiquing renaissance art.
@Tactician666 Its neither ludicrous nor "just" a comedy sketch, there is always a serious philosophical note to Stewart Lee's comedy. In putting this semi-serious interview together, he is essentially acknowledging the ethical quandary in attributing a contrived quote to someone in the public domain but he is doubling down on his view that it is justified for the purposes of satire. So no, people's opinions are not invalid if they disagree over how far satirists can go, its a subjective issue.
Go for him Vegas... Lee, you come over as a twat trying to defend that Brand bit. It worked though, as far as your act goes and then I came across this interview and suddenly it's tainted the way I will now react to everything you do. You lost the truth and tried to be smug.
@AlfredAhmed1 I do..but I thought there was a sense of truth there based upon an earlier clip I'd seen. I might have over reacted though...or just suddenly got tired of Lee's act.
At the beginning he stated that Brand did say that quote. Then once he is proven wrong he then admits that he made it all up to make a point? So his point is that certain people in the media like Russell Brand struggle to head issues straight on like racism, but Russell actually did face the issue head on in the real quote so this makes his whole argument in which he pulled out his comedy false. Sounds pretty desperate.
@dangerous043 the quote he made up was obviously made up. it was patently ridiculous. that's part of what made it funny. what stewart did is exaggerate what happened for comic effect. it's sometimes called parody. any parody will not be a word-for-word copy, rather it will exaggerate certain bits to make a funny comment on the original.
The bit about Brand was very funny but would have been much more persuasive if it hadn't been based on an invented quote. That he should make something like that up tells me a lot more about Stewart Lee than it does about Russell Brand. Shame.
This interview was an extra on the dvd of the show, and was put on there so that everyone knows that Stewart Lee knows that he misquoted him. This whole interview and the questions were written by Lee himself.
The ending makes this, hehe. So I guess this is a just a clever and round about way of explaining himself? I think Vegas must have been in on it too :) Love them both.
The look on Lee's face at 1:05 when he realises he's been fucked! Brilliant. You SERIOUSLY go down in my estimation Mr Lee after seeing you exposed here. To a fellow comedian!???? No shame...
Fuckng hell, people actually believed he was quoting Russell Brand? I saw the bit and I laughed knowing it was too ridiculous to be true. And Lee probably assumed everyone would see it was too far out there to be true. I'll bet people also believed him when he said Brand was dressed as a pirate as he talked about racism and Mr. Winky. This interviewer is ridiculous. Perhaps everyone was thrown off by the inclusion of an actual MLK quote right before it?
I used to actually like Stewart Lee, but for him to just take a fellow comedian, and invent words he didn't even say, I don't really agree with that. Hm, don't like him anymore.
@vsdavidxl Yeah, whatevs. Boo-hoo. Russell Brand is a Stewart Lee fan. So I guess it's pointless to get butthurt over the imagined ethics of standup comedians. The slander and libel laws in England are ridiculous, btw. Here in the U.S. they're practically non-existent when it comes to public figures.
@wellesradio any proof that Russell Brand is a Stewart Lee fan? butthurt? nice. It's my opinion, if Lee can't find humour then he shouldn't be a stand up comedian, if he has to invent humour of the reputation of others, moreso, if that reputation has no basis whatsoever, then he needs to get another job :)
Surely the question is whether or not Mt.Lee's parody by way of inciting insight into fails by way of truth regardless of any passing delight, especially in light of the fact that his audience expects he will navigate humour less by way of tact than intelligence they lacked.
I was once stood next to Stewart Lee in the bar of The Roundhouse in Camden Town. For legal reasons I can't say exactly what he said, but basically he made a false claim about the effectiveness of the household cleaner "Cillit Bang".
I am a fan of Lee's, I know, I know, I am entitled to appreciate intelligence and insight, people want to moan about the lack of funny, I dunno. Talking about Brand - So initially I watched a bit and the interviewer is so serious I have no idea how he keeps a straight face. And maybe because the interviewer is taking like a criminal offence I start to get uncomfortable for the Mr Lee. Hmm, I think. Then I walk away and come back and think ...... for chrissakes it's called a SPOOF!
@B1GGB0SSrevolution no it really isn't as high brow as you give it credit. Perhaps you would be able to see this if your nose wasn't parked up his rear end?
lol - this is actually quite clever - when I first started watching it I was horrified that Stewart Lee would do something so evil but then towards the end when he is talking about Brand being a product and allowed to make stuff up about him. If you ever watch Brand's work then you will see that a good 50% if not more of his stand up routine (which is a million times better than anything else Brand does) is bemoaning how the press make stuff up about him. Lee is making the same joke to expose DM
I think Stew's routine did treat Russell Brand unfairly even though I agree that Big Brother did not handle the matter well and that Brand sweetened his 'condemnation' of the incident in order to hold onto his job. Although Stew's being ironic here it actually was a case of collateral damage for a higher purpose and it was indeed presumptuous of him, even leaving aside the question of whether it was a misquotation, because Stew took it upon himself to judge and condemn a very morally cloudy act

This is so obviously a parady!!! In USA, to our chagrin, we elevate whatever someone who is famous from a movie or tv show, radio, idiot, etc...SAYS. All they have to do is speak, and people read something universally important !? Sad but true.
@sidsings000 It's a bit. Johnny Vegas is tripping him up by fake "confronting" him over a "lie" in one of his routines, and Stewart Lee is pretending to do a bit of weak-sauce equivocating to get out of it. They're both doing a bit of improv - the subtext is what makes it funny. Also, the idea of Johnny Vegas being serious and confrontational is fucking hilarious.
I don't see why Lee has to justify himself. I found his skit on Brand funny, and I didn't take it literally. Why do people have to always justify what they say? You said it, and it rests on that rather than some apologetic explanation of your actions.
I get the iony but it still doesn;t sit well with me. If you watch the actual routine th quote was taken from all Lee does is read a quote from Martin Luther King Jr then from Russel Brand with the juxtaposition of the quotes showing how modern TV can't tackle racism. The fact he makes up a quote and the fact what Russel said was quite sensible makes his point redundant. It's lazy and not fair to Russell Brand. If it was vice versa you'd all be outraged ar Brand.
@Hogeyz Surely the point lies in Lee's brilliant and extremely convincing pastiche of the Brand style. Lee no more intends us to believe this is an authentic quote than the Spitting Image team intended us to believe that John Major lived on peas. It's just that he's more subtle, building much of his act on near-credible distortions of reality, of which this is just one example. As he rightly says, these distortions (like those of political cartoonists) are a unique way of arriving at the truth.
It's nice to hear a view from one of the more objective Lee fans. Now that youve called me a cunt I can see that I was wrong, and Lee fabricating a quote to make Brand sound less intillegent that he was wasn't unfair at all. Although if you read Stews book "How I escaped my certain fate" He actually addresses the issue and says that if he were to do it again he wouldn't fabricate the quote. But I guess he needs to learn to appreciate intelligent humour as well?
Fuck them all stewart lee rocks!! When is he going to be given the chance to compere my new game show called "lets hunt and kill russell and katy on honeymoon" every week during there honey moon they are hunted to within an inch of there life by various predators culminating in the finale-the hounds of hell chase and catch them and we are treated to the ultimate delight.
@KENRHY He's funny but overrated, only a big name because he shagged kate moss, but still a funny guy, also he's loves the glamour and the celebrity a bit to much.
@purplenurps i agree a haircut and a few swear words but deeply talentless and hopefully on celebrity big brother when they come up with a new "Brand" -Fuck i'm funny.
It's shows how good Stewart Lee is that he has Jonny Vegas struggling to compose himself. I think Stewart Lee is in a class of one, and it's the best class too.
Stewart Lee is just good at doing things that he isn't supposed to do. Blasphemy, libel, slander and anti-establishment ravings. This is probably why we hardly saw him on T.V for ten years. Nobody really "gets" his comedy because you aren't meant to, it raises far more questions than it answers and he is pretty damn clever at it, too. He is one of those comics who is an expert on delivery, like Bernard Manning, even if you hate what he says it still makes you laugh. The similarity ends there.
oh god, of course it's a joke!! how can you enjoy Stewart Lee and completely miss his clever irony? met him and he's a very polite and friendly guy, not like this smug skit at all!!
I cannot believe some people think Stewart Lee was being serious here! It's a routine about how the press manipulate the content of an interview/story to sensationalise a situation; the original context and content getting totally lost. Very funny stuff. And Vegas was excellent too.
@ianbeck73 In what context was this interview done? Where does it come from? It seems serious to me and outside his comedy character; Vegas is a pretty articulate guy.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It's serious. You people can't bear to see your comedy superhero on the ropes. They chose Johnny V to make it look less than serious but be under no mistake.
I have to say Johnny did a good job.
Why would it not be serious? it is serious...as well as legally necessary no doubt.
@berniecarnivor im no legal expert but i highly doubt this was legally necessary, and i think saying so was part of the joke. you cant be sued for libel simply for saying they said something they didn't. usually you have to show that it actually damaged their reputation to the point that it hurt their professional work. i really doubt something like this would apply.
@berniecarnivor Your a bloody tool, you clearly dont know that for certian(as it isnt true)so why go posting it on the internet,I cant stand it when people post"facts" When its clearly not a fact but more of an opinion because they dont know there stuff.Im sure stewart lee would be delighted to see these comments as it higlights exactly what he was on about, about people being misquoted and taken out of context. So bernie youve kind of contradicted ye point,do ye homework before ye open ye mouth
He did say russel brand said this in his show but it was done in a way where people werent supposed to take it at face value,it was obviously elaborated. He was taking the piss at the time that somthing serious happens so they get a famously inappropriate comedian to say sorry and ensure the apolgies of channel 4.This piece was taking the piss about misquoting patically in the media and is not really an apology or for legal reasons or anything like that, its about people mis interpret the meaning
i love how even when doing these fake interviews and stew is supposed to be talkin bullshit he still comes up with some beautiful truths, i.e. "if your doin a routine about what a dog is thinkin, no one says you dont no that the dog was thinkin i want a bone"
I'm not sure I get this one. He's comically deflecting the issue, which is a joke in itself, but...what did Russell Brand actually say? Is it true that Lee misquoted him intentionally? I'm not a huge fan of Russell Brand but he's not always a raving idiot, he often says quite bright things. If it is true that Lee really did make up a line for Brand, I think I like him a little less than I did.
@valerin0 There can be no doubt that Stuarts point is a worthy one: trusting corporate interests to be anything other than self serving, giving credence to a corporate celebrity spokesperson on an issue that THAT very corporation has an interest in is unlikley to hilight failings in the company, it's methods or its ideology.
It is a masterpiece. The way the whole thing unveils is just brilliant, from the beginning to the final explanation, and yet feels like a spontaneous interview with ironic twist.
Love how complicated some manage make a straight forward joke. All this discussion of 'Irony on irony', reminds me of the ironic press sketch from TMWRNJ.
P.S. I just wanted to show off that I've seen other Stewart Lee programs. Please don't attack me

I always ALWAYS think Stewart Lee is serious at the start of these bits. He does the " talking in circles, full of shit politician " bit SO well!!

KENRHY 1 year ago
@KENRHY He's funny but overrated, only a big name because he shagged kate moss, but still a funny guy, also he's loves the glamour and the celebrity a bit to much.
purplenurps 1 year ago
@purplenurps i agree a haircut and a few swear words but deeply talentless and hopefully on celebrity big brother when they come up with a new "Brand" -Fuck i'm funny.

Right on.
It's shows how good Stewart Lee is that he has Jonny Vegas struggling to compose himself. I think Stewart Lee is in a class of one, and it's the best class too.

luke22kaka 1 year ago
Stewart Lee is just good at doing things that he isn't supposed to do. Blasphemy, libel, slander and anti-establishment ravings. This is probably why we hardly saw him on T.V for ten years. Nobody really "gets" his comedy because you aren't meant to, it raises far more questions than it answers and he is pretty damn clever at it, too. He is one of those comics who is an expert on delivery, like Bernard Manning, even if you hate what he says it still makes you laugh. The similarity ends there.
jacksawild 1 year ago
oh god, of course it's a joke!! how can you enjoy Stewart Lee and completely miss his clever irony? met him and he's a very polite and friendly guy, not like this smug skit at all!!
getbentforever2 1 year ago 3
I cannot believe some people think Stewart Lee was being serious here! It's a routine about how the press manipulate the content of an interview/story to sensationalise a situation; the original context and content getting totally lost. Very funny stuff. And Vegas was excellent too.
ianbeck73 1 year ago 74
@ianbeck73 Wrong.
purplenurps 1 year ago
@ianbeck73 In what context was this interview done? Where does it come from? It seems serious to me and outside his comedy character; Vegas is a pretty articulate guy.

It's serious. You people can't bear to see your comedy superhero on the ropes. They chose Johnny V to make it look less than serious but be under no mistake.
I have to say Johnny did a good job.
Why would it not be serious? it is serious...as well as legally necessary no doubt.
berniecarnivor 1 year ago
@berniecarnivor im no legal expert but i highly doubt this was legally necessary, and i think saying so was part of the joke. you cant be sued for libel simply for saying they said something they didn't. usually you have to show that it actually damaged their reputation to the point that it hurt their professional work. i really doubt something like this would apply.
theZodiacDigital 1 year ago
@berniecarnivor Your a bloody tool, you clearly dont know that for certian(as it isnt true)so why go posting it on the internet,I cant stand it when people post"facts" When its clearly not a fact but more of an opinion because they dont know there stuff.Im sure stewart lee would be delighted to see these comments as it higlights exactly what he was on about, about people being misquoted and taken out of context. So bernie youve kind of contradicted ye point,do ye homework before ye open ye mouth
nathg1990yt 1 year ago
He did say russel brand said this in his show but it was done in a way where people werent supposed to take it at face value,it was obviously elaborated. He was taking the piss at the time that somthing serious happens so they get a famously inappropriate comedian to say sorry and ensure the apolgies of channel 4.This piece was taking the piss about misquoting patically in the media and is not really an apology or for legal reasons or anything like that, its about people mis interpret the meaning
nathg1990yt 1 year ago
i love how even when doing these fake interviews and stew is supposed to be talkin bullshit he still comes up with some beautiful truths, i.e. "if your doin a routine about what a dog is thinkin, no one says you dont no that the dog was thinkin i want a bone"
daviesisRight 1 year ago
genius
billybrown123 1 year ago
I'm not sure I get this one. He's comically deflecting the issue, which is a joke in itself, but...what did Russell Brand actually say? Is it true that Lee misquoted him intentionally? I'm not a huge fan of Russell Brand but he's not always a raving idiot, he often says quite bright things. If it is true that Lee really did make up a line for Brand, I think I like him a little less than I did.

fucking genius!
rickman161 2 years ago
@valerin0 There can be no doubt that Stuarts point is a worthy one: trusting corporate interests to be anything other than self serving, giving credence to a corporate celebrity spokesperson on an issue that THAT very corporation has an interest in is unlikley to hilight failings in the company, it's methods or its ideology.

Now what *would* be ironic is if he was making up the 'corrected' quote and Russell actually did say what Stew said in the original act.
