OoT was so good and so well received, I think if they would've made what they originally planned, it would've probably sucked, or at least been worse than the OoT we have, because... come on... you hyped it so much a video game could never have been that amazing (at that time)
Notice in the middle of the menu where it shows your temple pendant things? It looks like the triforce pieces would have been there, a part of they game they failed to re-do, maybe?
It's kinda funny how the beta Zelda 64 had fully 3D towns and such that were never implemented, yet Mega Man 64 had them. Albeit, Mega Man 64 was a port of sorts of Mega Man Legends on the PS1 and had worse overall graphics (in my opinion) but it still seems feasible.
Notice in the animations of Link how he runs and then skids to a haul in some scenes, it's like reminiscent of modern animations like uncharted...awesome to say the least!
I read not too long ago that Miyamoto originally intended Ocarina of Time to be set completely in Ganon's Tower and you'd go to different worlds from inside his tower, similar to Mario 64 and the castle.
Well the Triforce is in the game, and has a model. Its used in the story that the Great Deku Tree tells Young Link. By using cheat codes and stuff you can go to some room, thats either completely black or a test room (I'm not sure, its been awhile since I last played the game, and looked at videos.), but you could get to the triforce, but I think you would go strait through it or something. But its not an item you get without hacking the game or using cheat codes.
... what if Nintendo remade the original Zelda 64 for the Wii Virtual Console service? I think that would be freaking EPIC! I mean to me, Zelda 64 looks like a COMPLETELY different game to me, maybe even different story.
@DrLoganski He made a very nice documentary on the subject, this series isn't meant to be a lengthy documentary so much as a short burst of information though. But good for you, or him, or something.
@Deathwarrior989 Shit happens :3. Although fun fact, you can reverse that by hitting the like button. Youtube doesn't really make this clear though(I think, I don't really pay attention to their updates)
@gamerpwnage51 I think he was referring to the actual new Zelda title that Nintendo is developing for the 3DS, which I doubt that's this, but I think that's what he was getting at. Or she, I don't know genders on the internet.
Times like this I wonder if if this beta Zelda game could've been if Nintendo made the N64 using discs over cartridges in the first place. I love the N64 and the games, but I often wonder if Nintendo would have had less limitations if used discs over cartridges. Unfortunately I have an anti-Nintendo friend who hates the fact that they stuck with cartridges.
beta version looks way more cooler in my opinion and it even looks more realistic and its even got the original bad guys/monsters in it. even though the game we have now is freakin awesome, the beta version wouldve been way better...oh but the controls in the beta suck! the one we have now is WAY better
A lot of the intended features for this title didn't materialize in OoT, true, but few of them were story related. Nintendo -- for Zelda titles, at least, gets the gameplay and systems down before writing any story. I'm sure these features, which weren't feasible on the Nintendo 64, will make an appearance someday. Maybe on Wii U.
I actually think that fuzz looks kinda sexy. With the right TV and RF switch, you could actually tweak around with the picture to make it look like early beta footage from the nineties. You'll need a pretty old analog television to do so. Analog is SO much better than LCD/Digital. LCD doesn't have those nice scanlines, and it sometimes lags, and the picture on an LCD TV looks like a horribly compressed JPEG image. ALWAYS GO WITH ANALOG.
Also, Even if we did get this version of the game, it wouldn't look as sexy as the footage because of the fact that the fuzz will be non-existant - Which is where my Analog/RF Switch trick would come into play. hehehehehehehehehe.... You'll need a pretty crappy RF Switch to get the picture at just the right amount of fuzziness!
yknow, technically you do kinda get the triforce in the final OoT...problem is, you only get the one piece (Courage, of course), by the time you pull the master sword...before the first battle with ganondorf, he mentions that "the triforce pieces are resonating," and goes on to say how the three pieces are trying to re-form, since zelda (Wisdom), link (Courage), and ganondorf (Power) are finally in the same room...but yeah, the concept of obtaining the complete triforce was scrapped, sadly...
@CrashSucksMariosaGOD Well yeah I imagine you could refer to MM as Zelda 64. I mean, it's a Zelda game on the N64, so I don't see why people can't call it that. Generally when I say "Zelda 64" I'm referring to the early version of OOT.
@Yuriofwind I'm starting to think the scrapped stuff from Zelda 64 became Animal Crossing. Here's some details:
You said cut down trees, right? You can do that in Animal Crossing.
Time also passes in normal time in AC.
According to someone named bowsersenemy, the Japanese version of AC for the Nintendo 64 and the GameCube versions use the same engine as Majora's Mask. The map select in the N64 version is the same as in the beta versions of Ocarina of Time Master Quest and Majora's Mask.
Intendo had never planned for link to get the triforce. The only reason that was shown was because Myiamoto wanted his team to experiment with 3D graphics by recreating the first ever zelda dungeon from the original legend of zelda. So naturally link found the triforce in the end.

if you want my opinion on the early zelda game, I think instead of gannondorf gaining access to the "temple of time" with link's unwitting help, he steals the triforce in the same way. I'd imagine the plot of the game would have been remotely similar.
So....why haven't they done all these great things with current Zelda titles? If a 64DD was set to do these things, then I'm sure a Wii could. Why didn't they? Have they forgotten about these ideas? They should consider bringing these back if they want Zelda games to re-acclaim its throne.
The game really needs something new and revised. The ideas from the 64 Beta are just that.
@TheCrazySweed I heard people saying that Nintendo will launch some DLC for their 3DS games. If it's true then maybe will see not just content from the beta but also from URA Zelda.
The concept for Ocarina of time from the 64DD reminds very much of the Fable franchise. Makes me wonder if Nintendo has any attention to make the future Zelda games like the Fable games?
When I discovered all the potentials put on OOT during the Beta work and that many of them was forget because of the capacities of the N64, I felt a little sad : sure the game is wonderful, but with all the original ideas, it could be more perfect. But we will never have the original project...
Original better than OOT? My Ass!! > In fact, we will never know, so we can't tell anything. It would be different, for sure, maybe better, but it's only suppositions.
@o0AlundrA0o The only group that I know, who's currently working with the project, is "ZethN64". They have a channel here on YouTube so if you are interested go check they channel.
@Chikunnism Well it could also end up looking 3x more different then the tech demo that was shown. Wind Waker anyone? Not complaining about Wind Waker btw, love it, just saying.
@Yuriofwind May I remind you that Wind Waker wasn't the only Zelda on the gamecube? Twilight Princess. The wii version was essentially the same, except it was mirrored and the antialiasing was better.
@Chikunnism What does that have to do with anything? Of course I know TP was on the Gamecube, that's the version I own. But the Zelda tech demo that was shown prior to the release of Wind Waker has nothing to do with TP. I can't even remember if TP had a tech demo though there was plenty of beta footage.
Anyways, the point I was trying to make was that when people saw that initial Zelda tech demo for the Gamecube they assumed the next game would look like that, but it was drastically different.
@Chikunnism Different not just in terms of graphics mind you as the game featured a completely different art style as well. So Zelda for WiiU may not look like a really good version of that tech demo, but instead a completely different game. I really wouldn't put it past Nintendo to do that, nor would I oppose it.
@Yuriofwind Let's just say that these tech demos was made to demonstrate the power of these console. In a video like this it's about how the game is and not so much about presentation or visual.
OoT was awesome but I wish the disc drive came out for the N64, I've never been able to seriously compare the N64 to the PS1 because of the serious gap in performance - the N64 drew the short straw even if it had good games. Nintendo is always behind though, at least from what I can tell by the Wii. :l
You know, this probably would have outdone Sony even with their FFVII on the market, if you think about it. I can assure you that if Nintendo had not dropped any of this Beta stuff and gone with it, especially with the original N64, Sony would not have lasted long in popularity.
I'm 23 and left hardcore gaming more or less at about age 18/19. After discovering your gaming mysteries videos last week though I've been hooked. OoT is my all time favorite (I still listen to the soundtrack to this day) and this made my day. Great, great job and keep it up.
Your Gaming Mysteries series has actually made me incredibly sad that some of these didn't come out. The N64DD games look bloody awesome, even if they hardware they were designed for was shite. Same goes for Earthbound 64. It seems like Nintendo's developers during the time period of the 90s were really ambitious and they got shut down way too much. (Starfox 2... -_-)
@simplyxwilliam Zelda MM in beta form was known as Zelda Gaiden. Zelda Gaiden was suppose to be for the 64DD but evolved into MM on a cart. one of the reasons why it required the E-pack was because it was initially developed for the 64DD and the 64DD required that extra 4mb of Ram for the extra content and such. Zelda Gaiden is not a mystery like what Ura Zelda is. You can find info about Zelda Gaiden using Google.
i bet that the beta cartridges are guarded in the the most deep basement of the NIntendo building, inside in a unpenetrable vault, and god knows when they are going to show to the public,
thing is, if it werent for Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask would never have been made. (spoiler) Majora's Mask shows Link speaking to Zelda before he left Hyrule. Zelda gives Link the Ocarina of Time and then teaches him the Song of Time. without the useable masks in OoT, there would be no Majora's mask unless nintendo pulled the mask idea outta thier ass. i enjoy MM, so fuck AND thank u nintendo for not releasing Zelda 64
I think in the 64DD version of this game Link's soul wouldn't have needed to rest for 7 years. Why? Possibly because if the world of Hyrule was evolving then so was Link. If Link aged and 7 years (in game time) passed then he would have been old enough to pull up the MS and obtain the entire Triforce in order to defeat Ganon. The triforce remaining/ being placed back into the Temple of Light in the SR would have been the bs to the seal war in ALTTP. Think of how different the timeline would be.
in the zelda 64 beta video you showed, navi was red. i got the crystal armour for the 3ds when i got oot 3d and navi is red on the cover, coincidence i think not. plus sheik was holding a knife which was strange considering that sheik doesnt have a knife nore does he fight along side with link...
The reason for the triforce was because they remade eagle lybrith(zelda 1) to try to see what direction to go with for the new game. There's no telling how long the idea lingered.
Even though Ocarina of Time is being remade on the 3Ds, would it be considered being Zelda 64, considering it's in 3D, and the town like you said it was in 3D in Zelda 64 could possibly be the same in Ocarina of Time 3Ds. I know you will say it's just a remake, but it COULD have some elements as Zelda 64 had, and might had the idea from that. The remake could be a mixture between the two.
actually the triforce is just solid gold and the only reason that it wasn't in the actual game is because there would be no point in it even being just being gold with no further powers as noted in the final version of the game is that the triforce power is bestowed upon the three:Ganondorf, princess zelda and the hero of time link if noone has noticed the triforce itself (the gold) is above the door of time
@themetalminister1 I plan on doing an episode on that, but it'll be a while. Reason being is that when I do that episode, I want to physically have a 64DD, and a game for it, to do a hands on in the video.
things often change as games make advancements, I think Ocarina of Time is what Nintendo was working on all along, it just went through some test and eventually that was the final story, Link to the Past featured an obtainable tri-force at the end, but I guess Nintendo decided to go a different route with Ocarina, and I think they made the right decission there!
Physically getting the triforce wouldn't have been compatible with the story they stuck with, given Zelda and Ganondorf hold the other two parts of the whole.
I've heard that Nintendo was working with Sony back when the N64 was still new to make a new game system using discs. Nintendo cancelled the project, but Sony continued and made the PS1. Maybe the N64DD was what they would've made had they continued. Not sure though...
Hmm... maybe the Triforce as an actual item would have the same effects as completing Okami then starting a New Game Plus, Infinite Health and Items and x10 Attack power..
Thanks for the great vid....I've never seen this before :O Link's animations are almost exactly like those in Twilight Princess....Slashing while moving, dashbacks.....wow
About you said about the game in the n64 disk drive with internet connection in the game that was before nintendo wi-fi or the is the pre-nintendo wi-fi
Right now, making a beta restoration like this is completely impossible. While we have advanced very much since Zelda's Birthday, the OoT hacking scene still isn't capable of completely change the game like this. It would be easier to actually make a completely new N64 game to look like this.
@kargaroc386 "It would be easier to actually make a completely new N64 game to look like this." Ummm, sorry, but I have to disagree. That's EVEN HARDER then making some mod.
Am I the only one who actually remembers reading about Zelda 64 in nintendo power?

@Chikunnism What does that have to do with anything? Of course I know TP was on the Gamecube, that's the version I own. But the Zelda tech demo that was shown prior to the release of Wind Waker has nothing to do with TP. I can't even remember if TP had a tech demo though there was plenty of beta footage.
Anyways, the point I was trying to make was that when people saw that initial Zelda tech demo for the Gamecube they assumed the next game would look like that, but it was drastically different.
Yuriofwind 4 months ago
@Chikunnism Different not just in terms of graphics mind you as the game featured a completely different art style as well. So Zelda for WiiU may not look like a really good version of that tech demo, but instead a completely different game. I really wouldn't put it past Nintendo to do that, nor would I oppose it.
Yuriofwind 4 months ago
@Yuriofwind Let's just say that these tech demos was made to demonstrate the power of these console. In a video like this it's about how the game is and not so much about presentation or visual.

Omg, What if they "remade" Zelda 64 as a new game for the 3DS? I mean like a sequel to Majora's Mask
Zetro92 4 months ago
Ocarina of Time is probably my favorite game, but like you, im so sad all this awesome beta stuff was lost.
I also really would have liked to see more of that Classic Brown haired Link in 3D. Here's hoping they develop a "New Legend of Zelda" series.

OoT was awesome but I wish the disc drive came out for the N64, I've never been able to seriously compare the N64 to the PS1 because of the serious gap in performance - the N64 drew the short straw even if it had good games. Nintendo is always behind though, at least from what I can tell by the Wii. :l

MrSmb64maniac 5 months ago
You know, this probably would have outdone Sony even with their FFVII on the market, if you think about it. I can assure you that if Nintendo had not dropped any of this Beta stuff and gone with it, especially with the original N64, Sony would not have lasted long in popularity.
Link504 5 months ago
I'm 23 and left hardcore gaming more or less at about age 18/19. After discovering your gaming mysteries videos last week though I've been hooked. OoT is my all time favorite (I still listen to the soundtrack to this day) and this made my day. Great, great job and keep it up.

Retrogamer712 5 months ago
Your Gaming Mysteries series has actually made me incredibly sad that some of these didn't come out. The N64DD games look bloody awesome, even if they hardware they were designed for was shite. Same goes for Earthbound 64. It seems like Nintendo's developers during the time period of the 90s were really ambitious and they got shut down way too much. (Starfox 2... -_-)

does anyone else think the beta zelda should've been the zelda game for 3ds instead. but still ocarina of time is still the best game in my books.
ezio666 6 months ago

MrLisawsome 6 months ago 4
thing is, if it werent for Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask would never have been made.

@yuriofwind i don't get why nintendo doesn't just make the wii u and try to make the 64dd with better graphics
Dmontymagik 6 months ago
I think in the 64DD version of this game Link's soul wouldn't have needed to rest for 7 years. Why? Possibly because if the world of Hyrule was evolving then so was Link. If Link aged and 7 years (in game time) passed then he would have been old enough to pull up the MS and obtain the entire Triforce in order to defeat Ganon. The triforce remaining/ being placed back into the Temple of Light in the SR would have been the bs to the seal war in ALTTP. Think of how different the timeline would be.

in the zelda 64 beta video you showed, navi was red. i got the crystal armour for the 3ds when i got oot 3d and navi is red on the cover, coincidence i think not. plus sheik was holding a knife which was strange considering that sheik doesnt have a knife nore does he fight along side with link...
jacksonhero625 7 months ago
The reason for the triforce was because they remade eagle lybrith(zelda 1) to try to see what direction to go with for the new game. There's no telling how long the idea lingered.
theOriginalLink1 7 months ago
@Mike89066 I just found that out yesterday after I posted the comment, got false information...
TurboMiroku 7 months ago
Wait, Zelda 64 might have been a sequel to Zelda 2! Look at the link facing Silver Link! That could have easily made the timeline easier!
samuskillsjj 7 months ago
Even though Ocarina of Time is being remade on the 3Ds, would it be considered being Zelda 64, considering it's in 3D, and the town like you said it was in 3D in Zelda 64 could possibly be the same in Ocarina of Time 3Ds. I know you will say it's just a remake, but it COULD have some elements as Zelda 64 had, and might had the idea from that. The remake could be a mixture between the two.
TurboMiroku 7 months ago
actually the triforce is just solid gold and the only reason that it wasn't in the actual game is because there would be no point in it even being just being gold with no further powers as noted in the final version of the game is that the triforce power is bestowed upon the three:Ganondorf, princess zelda and the hero of time link if noone has noticed the triforce itself (the gold) is above the door of time

You should do a Gaming Mysteries about the 64 Disk Drive, to give everyone an indepth look at why it "bombed." Just a suggestion.
themetalminister1 8 months ago 11
@themetalminister1 I plan on doing an episode on that, but it'll be a while. Reason being is that when I do that episode, I want to physically have a 64DD, and a game for it, to do a hands on in the video.

things often change as games make advancements, I think Ocarina of Time is what Nintendo was working on all along, it just went through some test and eventually that was the final story, Link to the Past featured an obtainable tri-force at the end, but I guess Nintendo decided to go a different route with Ocarina, and I think they made the right decission there!
AllHailKingKurt 8 months ago
Physically getting the triforce wouldn't have been compatible with the story they stuck with, given Zelda and Ganondorf hold the other two parts of the whole.
MetroidJunkie2007 8 months ago
I've heard that Nintendo was working with Sony back when the N64 was still new to make a new game system using discs. Nintendo cancelled the project, but Sony continued and made the PS1. Maybe the N64DD was what they would've made had they continued. Not sure though...
DumbAssNegative 8 months ago
Hmm... maybe the Triforce as an actual item would have the same effects as completing Okami then starting a New Game Plus, Infinite Health and Items and x10 Attack power..

Right now, making a beta restoration like this is completely impossible. While we have advanced very much since Zelda's Birthday, the OoT hacking scene still isn't capable of completely change the game like this. It would be easier to actually make a completely new N64 game to look like this.
kargaroc386 9 months ago
@kargaroc386 "It would be easier to actually make a completely new N64 game to look like this." Ummm, sorry, but I have to disagree. That's EVEN HARDER then making some mod.
