  • Meanwhile at Apple Inc...

  • So the starving 3rd world children will be getting this instead of food. Wonderful concept.

  • were do you get that

  • also, guy93, access to the internet would greatly benefit those in the 3rd world who have to deal with disease because they can look up prevention methods such as directions on how to construct nets keep out mesquitos. It will help to unite everyone in the online community and I thank John Maddog Hall from MIT for coming up with the idea.

  • If they can read, of course. BTW, these laptops cost $220 USD now.

  • condoms arent a myth

  • This will allow children to learn modern skills and lift their communities out of the causes of famine. This is an education specific program. Just because there's other problems doesn't mean we can't tackle this one. Give a man a fish, he eats a meal. Teach them computing, and they can buy food. If you live in a city with no poor you can direct others' aid; fix what you can and quit carping on other programs.

Can't wait to get mine on the "buy 2 get 1" program. Ordered this morning!

  • And if everyone's got no food, and are dying from simple diseases, they will be more likely to keep plowing and hunting rather than quit their chores to work on a computer.Besides, if everyone in a country suddenly has computer skills, computer related jobs will be low-paying.

  • If you did your research you'd learn that those aren't the countries where this program is being deployed.

  • West Africa and Southeast Asia are like that. They aren't passing these out in Berlin or London.

  • This is a stupid idea. The company recently announced that the laptops will have to cost around $170 USD, instead of $100 dollars. Also, they found out that the kids have been using the laptops to watch porn instead of study.

If you were a starving child dying of disease, would you rather have a laptop or $100 USD worth of food and farming supplies?

  • Go ahead, piss on the idea. What are you doing to improve the piss poor education situation in 3rd world countries? I have. Until you've been to place like Cambodia it's easy to sit back and ridicule from our comfy armchairs rather than acting to make a difference. Is it better to give a man fish or teach him to fish?

  • I'm just saying that a laptop doesn't do a child any good if they are killed by malaria before they ever mature. There are still children dying of malnutrition and disease in the US. So why not before pouring cash and resources into ridiculously overpopulated hellholes filled to the brim with people who hate our guts, fix our homelands. And what exactly does that whole "fish" analogy have to do with this?

  • Well, a lot of irrational hatred toward the west from 3rd world african countries has to do with ignorance and a lack of understanding for an alien culture. If these 3rd world nations are given access to the world wide web, then they'll get a better understanding for the parts of the world they don't understand from sources such as wikipedia and web chats that they can have internationally.

  • On a side note, have you ever been to Cambodia?

  • Actually, yeah, I've been to Cambodia several times. I just returned from a trip to dedicate a school built with funds raised in part by myself, a co-worker and the company we work for.

  • We worked with the American Assistance for Cambodia to get the school built. I'm sort of passionate about the education situation in Cambodia especially given what the US did in the 70s to allow the civil war.

  • I see education as the only real hope for the Khmer to lift themselves out of the rut of poverty and corruption they are in currently. The two biggest education problems in Cambodia are putting a roof over the classrooms and getting the kids to show up for class (rather than work the rice paddy). If programs like this result in grade school attendance DOUBLING, then it's worth every penny.

  • when is this coming to the U.S?

  • I'm in shock at the idiocy of this idea.

  • This is going to be a very positiv impact on the internet community and the rest of the world. I hope it will soon come to us in Europe,Scandinavia,Sweden =] Thanks for the video!

  • Is this comeing in South Asia? I can't wait!

  • this is a great initiative to help the developing countries!
